On Thursday there was still no Marie or Maria so John decides it's time to move away from "basic parallel" and onto carving... Which of course leaves Mark even further behind on the slopes - very hard to carve in a snowplough. I had great fun though - perfectly groomed slopes and the wind in my hair - could get to like this speed thing! Some bad news today - poor Greg, who's been complaining about his ribs, has found out that he's actually broken one! Physio was going on about muscle damage but no... But the man's tough - he's carrying on regardless. After nearly 2 weeks resting her knees, Maria felt fit enough to join us on Friday which was great! As it was Friday we were due to have one-to-one lessons but given ... read more

The upside of the blizzard on Sunday was the amount of snow to ski on Monday... POWDER!!!!! Actually I may be overselling it here. Whilst great in theory, we haven't ever skied much powder plus we were exhausted from the weekend and it was fairly wet and heavy. Still, an opportunity to learn. Along with the new snow conditions, we had a new instructor, Downtown Johnny Brown. A man firmly of the opinion that life is not to be taken seriously and that skiing should be fun So he took great delight in introducing us to powder - I don't think I've fallen over so many times on the entire trip to date! But it obviously worked because by Wednesday we were nailing slopes we'd had difficulty with on Monday. Not to say that I'm an ... read more

We had no ski school last week as it was US Presidents Week (traditionally pretty busy in Whistler). Instead the various groups had avalanche and first aid training. Obviously we had our AST1 course first over the weekend so it was a fairly quiet week for me with just 2 days of first aid on Wednesday and Thursday and a leisurely ski on Tuesday to keep my hand in. Despite some pretty disgusting photos of burns, spider bites and injuries caused at the Pamplona Bull Running, the first aid course was really good and I'm now qualified to administer CPR to adults, children and infants... Come Friday evening we all trekked over to Lyndsay's garage to pick up the gear we'd need for the weekend. Just a small matter of touring skis, skins, rucksack, share of ... read more

What did you all do for Valentine's Day? I spent the day in the company of 6 nice young men on day 1 of our avalanche safety training course... Not entirely sure how that happened - one minute we were all milling around chatting outside the building where we'd been going through some of the theory, the next we'd been arbitrarily split into 3 groups and I ended up with the boys, rather than my normal "less aggressive" ski school group. This could prove interesting, particularly being with 2 teenagers with a penchant for chucking themselves off cliffs... First stop was the Horstman Glacier on Blackcomb to look at some recent avalanche activity. All sounds fine, but I didn't immediately realise that this meant negotiating a pitch of about 45 degrees through chopped up powder. And ... read more

I failed miserably on the buying new ski clothes front, but Dave and I (plus Greg, Kerry, Tiarnan, Mark and Alan) did manage to head up to the Whistler Sliding Centre to see the World Cup 4-man bob competition on Saturday. This was seen as a dry run for the Olympics next year so the organisers were obviously keen that everything went well. If the first hurdle was adequate attendance then they flew over that one - all tickets were sold out in advance. One of the things the organisers wanted to try out was the security arrangements for the venue... However, we didn't expect that this would involve voluntary security screening! Surely they would have been better making it mandatory - no-one would have thought it odd I'm sure, given what we're all used to ... read more

Firstly, the important bit - I passed my level 1 instructor course!! The Alltracks crowd did everyone proud and managed a 100% pass rate (except for Nicole who busted her knee last Sunday and is now on crutches and Callum and Miranda who couldn't be bothered to take the course) - cause for much celebration! To give you a brief rundown of the week - it snowed really hard on Sunday night so that we had powder conditions for our first day of the course on Monday. Not ideal as we'd all been used to the hard-packed/icy conditions of the previous snow-free couple of weeks and it was first powdery then lumpy and hard work. Therefore I skied like an idiot and got very frustrated with myself. Tuesday wasn't so bad although our instructor Sarah insisted ... read more

Doesn't time fly? Can't believe it's 9 days since I last posted... although to be fair, it's been mostly skiing which I'm sure you'd get bored of very quickly if I were to update daily! As you know, after a week of Ed pushing us hard and skiing us all over the mountain, I took the opportunity to take last Friday off and mooch around. The relaxing effects of the day were slightly destroyed by going out that evening, drinking far too many vodka Red Bulls and Jaeger Bombs, mincing around the dancefloor at Maxx Fish (local nightclub) and then not being able to sleep until 9.30am on Saturday due to the exceptionally high caffeine intake!! Saturday was, as you might imagine, a bit of a write off... So it was just as well that Em ... read more

Whilst it's undoubtedly beautiful with lots of sunshine and clear blue skies, the snow conditions are now getting a bit unpleasant and we desperately need some fresh snowfall... There are still some areas where going is fair (albeit hard-packed) but there's too much ice for my liking now and quite a few of the runs have bare patches of rock and/or grass. But salvation may be in sight - apparently flurries are forecast for tomorrow with proper snow on Tuesday. Here's hoping! So it seems like a while since I last updated you on my progress. Finished lessons with Petra last Thursday, feeling a little more confident. Took the entire weekend off to rest my weary limbs and to try to recover from my various lurgies. Then back to school with a vengeance on Monday with ... read more

My first black run in Whistler just happened to be the Dave Murray Downhill! OK, so the downhill racers tend to take that particular section with skis pointed straight down and I took about a dozen turns, but I was pretty pleased with myself. More sunshine at the top today, although the valley was shrouded in cloud until right at the end of the day (basically when we were sitting outside the Garibaldi Lift Company with a beer in hand!). But that made for some interesting photos! In case you're interested, the instructor in shot is Petra, along with Matt, who's a little faster than me. For now.... read more

What a Beautiful Day! When I woke up this morning with a sore throat and grey skies outside, I wasn't particularly enthusiastic, but it was great out there! The cloud base was pretty low but above that was a lovely sunny day with plenty of good snow. And my skiing didn't entirely suck either - maybe drug assisted is the way to go - the ibuprofen/codeine/salbutamol/strepsils mix obviously worked wonders ;-) Enjoy the pictures! According to the locals, days like these are rare... Today's excitement was provided by my classmate Marie... she managed to fall off the edge of a cat track we were traversing into deep snow and trees ("the cliff" as it is now known). She was rescued by 2 snowboarders (one of whom I cursed as he stopped right in front of me, ... read more
