Despite a rather inconvenient SAS (the airline not the special forces) schedule change a few weeks ago, Mum and Dad arrived safely at Central Station late on Thursday evening. What had originally started as a quick 20 minute trip to City Airport to catch their flight became a marathon nearly 2-hour train/tube journey to Heathrow before even setting foot on the plane! But they got here, and that's the main thing. We even found each other at the station easily enough. Unfortunately, the walk from Hornstull to my flat managed to convince Mum that I live in an area full of tramps and prostitutes but never mind... Just teasing Mum I had to work on Friday so Mum and Dad had a "relaxing" day walking the entire length of Södermalm, twice, and tramping all round Gamla ... read more

After two and a half months in Sweden I felt the need to spread my wings a little outside the confines of Stockholm and its inner archipelago (well, Vaxholm to be precise). New partner in crime Rachel was up for a weekend away so we set off to Sweden’s fourth largest city, Uppsala. Uppsala is a city famous for its university, its cathedral and as the long-time home of Carl Linnaeus (for the forgetful scientists among you he was the one that invented the system of binomial classification that is still used in identification of plant and animal species). It’s also smaller than Bromley. A fact which shouldn’t really surprise, given that Sweden has a population of only 9.2 million. Saturday morning dawned and it was due to be one of the hottest weekends of the ... read more

A lot has been going on since my last entry so I think I'm going to need to be brief! When I last left you I was about to board a plane back to the UK for a long Bank Holiday weekend (2 here and 1 in the UK). I had a great time catching up with friends and family but fear I drank too much and slept too little, so headed back here feeling more tired than when I left! Highlights of the weekend included Gareth trying to persuade Nat that the inclusion of fish sauce in her Thai dinner wasn't contrary to her long-standing vegetarianism (cue Fez and I rolling around crying with laughter just as Em walked in from work), a nearly full house T.com on a Friday, a full (and very tiring) ... read more

This weekend I had my first visitor! But before I met Sarah at T-Centralen on Friday night I had a social life to nurture... Hence I found myself at "Boule & Berså" with a Daniel Craig lookalike. Let me start at the beginning. When I knew I was going to be working out here, I realised that I wouldn't necessarily be able to socialise too much with my colleagues (and actually they don't seem to do that much themselves so another reason to look elsewhere). Plus I feel bad that everyone has to speak English with me all the time. So I searched the net for a Stockholm expat group that I could join. Which is how I found the Stockholm Expat Meetup Group. They seem to have events every couple of weeks and last Friday ... read more

I now feel a bit less of a hobo, having settled into my lovely new flat. I've been here a week now and have finally found time to stock up the cupboards with spoils from the local supermarket after another hectic week. You can be nosy and see a few photos of the place here although I'm not sure how much longer the listing will be there... Depends how efficient our friend Björn is! To give you a brief description, I have 2 bedrooms, a large kitchen/diner with all the necessary equipment, a large lounge overlooking the water and a small but perfectly adequately formed wetroom. All very white with lots of wood - typical modern Scandinavian (although owned by a Brit!). SO much better than the hotel Particularly as I can now cook for m ... read more

One thing we Brits could learn from the Swedes is how to have a good bonfire. Then again they seem to have more occasions to practice. Last night was one of them - Valborgsmassoafton (or Walpurgis Night). Whilst the bonfires apparently once protected Swedes from witches, they now mark the beginning of spring. The weather was certainly playing along yesterday with beautiful blue skies and sunshine, even if the temperatures are still not particularly high. The sun had brought the Stockholmers out in force though - all the local restaurants and cafes now have pavement tables which seem to be well patronised (particularly those that provide blankets!). I started my evening with a leisurely stroll south through the city then along the water at Strandvagen towards Djurgarden, ultimately headed to Skansen, Stockholm's open air history museum/amusement ... read more

Another full speed week at work as I continue to get involved in all the various projects there. I would tell you more, especially about the soap opera that is office gossip/politics but I really can't... Maybe I'll be able to once the dust settles. Or maybe I'll write a book. With names changed to protect the guilty. Or not. I continue to challenge the office staff in my quest for accommodation. This week has been all about apartments. Petra, the ever-helpful receptionist has been on the case. The first one the agent found her was in Sodermalm (the trendy bit if you remember). I dutifully trotted down there on Thursday evening to take a look. All was looking promising - it was about 20 minutes door-to-door from the office, in a nice area with all ... read more

After 3 whistlestop weeks back home it was with a little trepidation that I got on the plane early on Tuesday morning, headed for Stockholm, land of vikings, Abba and Ikea. I was about to start a job with no clear remit, knowing no-one in the city apart from my new colleagues (who I briefly met the previous week and who may not like me for very long) with a 4-night booking in a fairly rubbish hotel and no return ticket. What's to worry about?! Well, the hotel thing was relatively easy to sort out. I did practically nothing apart from take a tour of 3 very nice hotels one evening and state my preference (sadly the comment about loving the suite wasn’t quite taken seriously). Then some lovely people at the office entered into frantic ... read more

After nearly 3 months in the Whistler "bubble", I'm on my way home tomorrow. I really can't believe it's gone so quickly! Despite some less positive points, I've really enjoyed my stay here - the first time I've properly lived in another country. I even joined the library Our last week of ski school was a free ski week again and Matt and Chris came back to join us which was great. John wasn't available on Monday or Tuesday so had asked Scott to sub in for him. I didn't actually ski on Monday (taking a call from the UK, of which more later) so missed out as Scott was then nabbed by another group on Tuesday! Not to worry as we got Petra again, our instructor from the very first week. She was very keen ... read more

No, nothing smutty! I'm just talking about the two non-skiing snow based activities of this rather busy weekend... First of all, tubing on Saturday night. For those of you who don't know, tubing is the term used to describe hurling oneself down an ice channel whilst sitting in an inflated inner tube. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves for the most part. I will say that the black diamond run was my favourite - especially going over the roller, at speed, backwards... Some of the others favoured the blue run where the attendant was treating everyone to the spinning treatment - not sure if you'll be able to access Jack's video to see the full effect! On Sunday I treated myself to a snowmobile trip in the Callaghan... read more
