Everytime the issue of Osama Bin Laden comes up, I wonder why the heck he hasn't been found; however, that question inevitably leads me to think about where I could hide if some government agency was after ME. Well, for everyone that has ever felt spooked when they see themselves on the Wal-Mart camera or heard that the farthest you can get from a road in the entirety of the Great Smokies National Park is 3.7 miles... I've got a good place for ya. Way out in the middle of nowhere in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Now, we all can't go out there at the same time, but I think you could probably run across the border, and hide out in somebody's pig barn until the CIA finally gives up. San Jose, Nuevo Leon has approximately ... read more

Believe it or not, Cinco de Mayo is not the only Mexican holiday. Lucky for me, I got to travel to Guadalajara to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day on Sept. 15. Guadalajara is the home of tequila and mariachi, and when I ask my Mexican friends to compare Guadalajara to Monterrey, they always say that it's "mas colonial." Many people here characterize it as the most Mexican city in Mexico, so we figured what better place to spend Independence Day and yell Viva Mexico? So, I packed my bags and headed out on a trip organized by my friend and personal travel agent, Oliver. Let's just say that he's amazing. He found the cheapest flights, reserved a hotel in the middle of downtown, and even reserved a van to take us from school to the airport. The ... read more

Yep, many times, open-air restaurants serve customers a complimentary bean-based soup... and it seems like every time we eat it, all of it gets eaten except for this one piece of meat that looks like it has taste buds. So, the conversation inevitably turns to a lively debate of whether it IS or IS NOT "tongue." On two different occassions, the argument has required a judge (the waiter) who is asked with excited pointing gestures to the interrogater's open mouth if it is indeed "lengua." Both times the waiter has laughed amd assured us that it was not. The problem is, that no one has ever understood the explanation of what it really was. Yesterday, I went to my second Monterrey Rayados soccer game. The Rayados are one of two professional soccer teams here in Monterrey, ... read more

This past weekend I had the amazing opportunity to go on an excursion to Cuatro Cienegas in Coahuila, Mexico. Cuatro Cienegas is a desert with about 200 natural oasis which are the home of countless, rare species of plants, fish, and bacteria. One pool called the blue pool is being studied by NASA because the bacteria that colors the water a gorgeous blue produces oxygen. It was a fairly short trip; we left at 7 am on Sat. and returned at 10 pm Sunday, but it felt like a true vacation. For one thing, I slept in a room with air conditioning. Plus the weather there was a lot "nicer" anyway because there wasn't quite so much humidity.... actually got to wear my hair down without it being a complete fro. On Saturday we visited a ... read more

The scenery here in Monterrey is not what I had pictured when I signed up for studying in Mexico. I'm staying on a campus with lush green grash, trees everywhere, and mountains looming in the distance. Much of the city is your typical scrubby brush and sparse grass, but with proper care, it's gorgeous. After being completely overwhelmed and lost for the first few days, I have come to appreciate the large campus and all that it has to offer. There are picnic tables everywhere where students surf the internet and work on homework through the wireless internet. Not only are there thousands of students, but there are all kinds of animals. One night during the first week, I was kind of lonely and walking around campus "exploring," something caught my eye, and it was a ... read more

Getting here

Things are going well so far. Once I got past sitting beside the 350 lb. man sitting beside/on me during the plane ride. We kept breathing together because his entire arm was on top of mine; I was pinned in and my neck hurt from the awkward angle in which I was sitting. The worst part was that it wasn't even my seat; someone had taken mine. I was so relieved to get a seat (the last one) with Big Guy that I didn't remember to become angry with the guy that switched around so as not to be stuck in my position. All the people here have been super warm and helpful so far. I don't have a host family because they had me signed up as coming next year... go figure. Anyway, I'm staying ... read more
