Day 9 ...in which we dozed, got some sun, dozed, and ate... Given that we got to our hotel somewhere around 1:30am, it was always going to be a slow day. We had decided to spend the first two nights staying at Nai Yang Beach Resort. It was close to the airport, and sounded like it would be quieter than other areas. There weren't many tourists around, but there were plenty of locals trying to sell to what few farangs there were. It was a bit of a surprise to see how expensive things were here (compared to Chiang Mi and Bangkok). Still cheaper than back home of course. For reasons we're not sure of, the resort saw fit to have an enclosure containing several tortoises on their grounds. Entertaining but odd. We spent a bit ... read more

Day 6 ...in which we found the food, fruit and flower market, spent a few hours in an optometrist, ate some dodgy tofu, got another massage and wandered for hours in the Saturday Walking market... Pretty close to our hotel was the fruit and flower market (which also contained lotsa food, and some clothes). Some more jackfruit was purchased, as well as some snacks, and some clothes. The flowers were pretty amazing, with a huge range of species and colours. oh, on the flight over to Thailand, Chris watched a documentary about Thai herbs, and one of the ones mentioned was "Pigeon Wing Flower" which is bright blue and supposedly very good for blurry eyes. The flower appeared to be called "Butterfly Pea" in stores here. A bit of searching, has suggested it was Clitoria ternatea ... read more

Day 4 ...in which we wandered around, got led astray by Lonely Planet, got geographically embarassed, got coaxed by a travel agent, and got a massage... The train was running two hours late when it finally got in. We had transfers organised and the travel agent picked us up and drove us to the hotel. she then preoceeded to try to fill our diary for the four days we were here. We managed to convince her that we were just a little too tired for this so she agreed to come back later. We attempted to find a Buddhist Vego restaurant which sounded great according to the Lonely Planet, but it didn't appear to be there. Of course by then we were hot, hungry, tired, slightly lost and rapidly heading towards grumpy. :) Thankfully we found ... read more

...in which we climbed a pile of rubble, wandered through little India, got on a boat, saw some things noone should see, got rained on, and left Bangkok on a "first class" train... We went to the nearby temple which you can climb to the top to get a good view of the city. Most temples required you to remove your shoes before entry, and have signs making that request. This temple had signs telling you to NOT remove your shoes. It was very confusing - like seeing a sign saying "Dry Paint" stuck on a park bench. A few tourists were milling around the door holding their shoes and looking confused. After the temple, we went down through little India, and then caught one of the boats that travel up and down the river. We ... read more

Day Zero (aka arrival) ...in which we hang out at airports, play games on the plane, and try to persuade a cabbie to turn his meter on... Planes are more interesting than they used to be. With everything from 50 different movies to Super Mario Brothers, and a language learning game, you can generally find something to do (even if it's trying to help the old Turkish lady sitting next to you work out how to use her controller). Arriving into Bangkok late at night, Chris got some cash out, and then went down to catch the Express train into the city. The express train only runs every 30mins or so, so while the trip was fast, the wait wasn't. On arrival at the station, we went down to the road to attempt to catch a ... read more

Just over a week to go and it's time to get things packing. This photo pretty well covers everything except what I'll be wearing, my bike pedals, and a few carry on objects (passport, Kindle, mp3 player, water bottle, etc.). Here's a rough list starting top left: Towel (gotta know where that is at all times!), facewasher (30+ year old Santa Claus one!), and other toiletries. USB charger with multiple wall plug adaptors for different countries, head torch and two cameras (waterproof, and normal). Fold up plates and mugs (love these). Acer Netbook (so we can do our taxes, keep this blog up to date and watch Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones). Fuel bottle, medications (Probiotica to reduce likelihood of gastro), Andrographis tablets (to give the immune system a boost), Travel Calm (so I don't ... read more
