When we arrived in Barcelona, we were met by Monica who is an old friend from Lismore. She took us up to a great lookout to look over the city and surprised us by having some cold beers waiting in the back of the car! We sat and chatted for a couple of hours, admiring the view (and Chris checking out all the mountain bikes going past), and then she dropped us at the train station so we could make our way to our next host. Our host (Mark an ex pat Aussie) and his partner (Marlene) and son (Lucas) live in the hills behind Barcelona. It's a great location - quiet, next to a lot of forest, and not that far from the city (reminded us of our place back in Hobart). The next morning ... read more

We got into Rennes pretty late at night, but didn't have any problems finding our next host. Joanna who is an animator and illustrator and loves Neil Gaiman was waiting for us and greeted us at her door. Thursday we walked from her place through a beautiful park and into the old city. We found an amazing shop selling a huge range of prints, posters and postcards. There were some historical, some artistic, some humorous, and a lot from movies. The shop made us want to buy a heap of posters and redecorate when we got back. Not really practical though, so we made do with a few postcards to send home. For lunch we were recommended a particular Creperie from amongst about 100 in the cicy centre! We had a galette (which is a savoury ... read more

While waiting for a tram into Nantes central, we realised that we have left behind the delcious and expensive chocolate tiles we had bought near the Eifel tower in Paris! Enough to bring tears to your eyes (and it did - but that could have been the lack of sleep too). Our next hosts lived right in the centre of Nantes. We met Pascal and Sirius (the cat) at their home, and went for a wander to grab some tourist info. We went over to the bike hire place and booked a couple of bikes for the next few days so we could ride to the coast and back. Pascal's partner Leyla came home and cooked up a couple of delicious pizzas for us all to share. Sunday morning we packed up what we needed for ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 28th 2012

We survived the crazy drive from Frankfurt, and arrived in Paris pretty exhausted. We met Johanna at her apartment which we were renting through airbnb (since we couldn't find any rooms in couch surfing). Johanna was going away to a party for the weekend, so we had the place to ourselves for three nights. It was pretty cool getting our own apartment in Paris for only 40 euro a night (even if it was mozzie infested, and had a bed that was only slightly softer than wood). After we were settled, we went for a walk around the neighbourhood and down towards Notre Dame. Following a tip from Lonely Planet we found a nearby felafel store for dinner which was delcious but seriously overpriced. Saturday morning we grabbed one of the velib bikes from near the ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia June 22nd 2012

Thanks to the ridiculously fast Highways, we were in Dusseldorf in no time. We were spending the night with an American expat couple (Ana and John) and they were home to meet us when we arrived. We spent a few hours chatting about their reasons for moving to Germany and cultural differences, and then went for a walk down to watch the sun set over the Rhine as it was a beautiful evening. Lots of people were about as it's near the Altstadt (Old Town) which is full of bars and restaurants, and Germany were playing in the Euro Cup (Football) tonight. Once the sun finally set (somewhere around 9:30pm) we wandered back and sat in a restaurant to eat some pizza and watch the rest of the game. Along the way stopping to watch an ... read more

We arrived late on Tuesday feeling pretty tired and run down. Thankfully our host was waiting to meet us and whisked us onto a tram back to her house where her husband was making a delicious meal to welcome us (lemon juice cooked fish, cous cous, tagine cooked vegetables and some salad). We were shown up to our room on the third floor and made to feel very comfortable and welcome. On Wednesday we caught the tram to the main station (Gare du midi) and then went for a walk into the centre passing through the middle eastern area which consisted of a lot of men (and men only) sitting at cafes drinking coffees or mint teas, smoking and chatting. Near the Grand Place (Brussels central square), there is a small statue of a boy pissing ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom June 12th 2012

We only had a week to see the sights outside London in the UK. Yes - not much time, but we really wanted to focus on Europe. After looking at different train fares (really expensive unless you book way in advance) and trying to work it all out we realised that a hire car was going to be the way to go. Tuesday morning, Katie kindly dropped us off at the station (thanks again for being so generous Katie!) and we went in to Victoria station to get our car. From there we drove West out of the city heading for a pile of rocks called Stonehenge. As we attempted to find out way out of the city, we discovered that it's sometimes hard to work out what the speed limit is, and even when you ... read more

The view of the Swiss alps from the plane was incredible! Huge snow capped peaks rising through the clouds, glowing a pinky orange colour as the rising sun lit them up. After 12 hours of flying, an hour or so in finding our way through the maze of Zurich airport to our next flight, then another hour and a half flying, we finally arrived at Heathrow around 9am. The thing about long flights is you never seem to be able to get comfy enough in a seated position to sleep well, if at all. The thing about missing sleep, and then finding oneself in a different timezone 10 hours the day before, is your brain kinda goes a little hazy around the edges. To reduce th e jetlag effect, we needed to stay awake while the ... read more

Days 12-14 ...in which we left Phuket, pretended we were rich in Bangkok, wandered Chatuchak, and then said farewell to Thailand... After saying our fond farewells to our resort, we taxi'd back to Phuket, and then flew to Bangkok. We had splurged a bit on these last few nights - staying at the Sheraton Royal Orchid. It was pretty stunning and we felt underdressed just being in the foyer. Heading back out again the guide book led us to a very small little Indian Vego restaurant which made some delicious and spicy food. The next day we spent all day wandering around Chatuchak markets. They are large, bordering on ridiculous! Some cheapo copy cat stuff, but mainly a LOT of crafts, locally made gear and jewellery. The number of people was amazing - a huge area ... read more

Day 11 ...in which we went to sea and tested the limits of our claustrophobia... Today we had booked in to do a Sea Canoe tour around Phonga Nga Bay with John Gray Sea Canoe company (www.johngray-seacanoe.com). First, an amusing story regarding the company name. John Gray has been kayaking for a long time, and when he set up this company he called it sea canoe, even though it's not canoeing, it's kayaking (using a double blade paddle). He guessed that all the other rip off companies would copy his name without knowing what they were doing (and they have). The tour was a bit more expensive than other tours, but his ethical (guides are well trained, well paid, and well fed), environmental (you are not allowed to touch the stalagtities, or feed animals), and safety ... read more
