Our first flight was delayed by a couple of hours, which meant we missed our connection. Thankfully they were through the same airline, so they put us onto the next plane, and also gave us a meal voucher. When we finally arrived in Las Vegas we picked up our car (refusing the offer of a "larger and more comfortable ride", and sticking with a normal sized 4-door, and then proceeded to get slightly directionally challenged finding out hosts house. It was around midnight, we had been travelling all day, and we weren't used to the GPS system that was in the car. That's our excuse anyway... In the morning we dozed for a while and then headed out to the post office to get our Burning Man tickets, which thankfully were there! Yay! We also discovered ... read more

After New York, we travelled North to visit a friend who used to live in Lismore - Jill. The bus from New York took us to Boston where we caught a tram to the North Station to cach a train up to Portland. Unfortunately when we got there we found the train was full, so we had to catch the tram back again to the bus station and get a bus to Portland instead. Always fun bouncing around public transport with huge backpacks on. Jill's mum Kate picked us up from the bus station and we spent the night in Scarborough at their beautiful house. The next day Kate took us for a power walk along the coastline which was pretty beautiful. After that she dropped us in to the bus station and we travelled up ... read more

Travelling West over the Atlantic meant that due to the change in time zones, our day was stretched substantially longer. We got in to New York around 8:30pm which was somewhere around 2am in Swiss time. The we had to navigate the usual shoestring budget methods of getting to our destination (one air-train, one train, three subways, and a long walk through Harlem at 10pm or so). It was very hot and sticky and it had been a really long day so we were drop down exhausted by the time we arrived (around 4am Swiss time!). We hadn't been able to sort a couch surf out, so ended up paying to rent an apartment for the five nights we were there. We were kinda paying to house-sit (and look after two cats) which is odd, but ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-East » Lugano August 4th 2012

After our first train had no aircon or working toilets, we were feeling pretty unpleasant. Things improved along the way though, and the views over the lakes in the Alps were stunning. We were pleasantly surprised to have our host (Erika) meet us on the platform in Lugano. She drove us up the hill back to her house where we met another surfer who was staying there at the same time (Shawn from Singapore). After our experience in Costa Brava, we were a bit worried when Erika apologised that the room we would be in was a bit crowded with her son's stuff. Not to worry though - the room was large and had plenty of space. After the much needed shower, we came out for some dinner. And OH what a dinner! Erika is a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Treviso July 31st 2012

It was an incredibly hot day when we got in to Treviso. After meeting our host Valeria (yes, we just went from Valerio to Valeria!) and her partner Renzo we attempted to stay cool in the house. We started to set the outside table for dinner just before the weather started to change. It cooled down quite a lot and then started to rain. We opened up the windows to cool the house, but then a snap storm hit. It went from light rain to large pieces of hail and gale force winds in a matter of 10 seconds. The wind was so strong it started blowing the large outdoor table across the ground. Chris ran outside and braved the pieces of hale flying sideways past his ears to rescue the crockery off of the table. ... read more

Thankfully the train to Venice had Internet access as we still didn't have any accomodation sorted. After much searching, we finally found a bed and breakfast that was actually pretty cheap (given it's location in Venice). The guide book warned us that due to Italian laws we shouldn't expect much for breakfast - maybe a packed croissant and a coffee. On arrival we grabbed a three day pass for the boats around the island (they are very expensive otherwise), and then jumped on a boat to the stop near our accommodation. without a decent map and given the random nature of Venice streets we then wandered around in circles for a while before finally doing what everyone does and ask someone. Venetians are completely used to this and happy to point you in the right direction. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » La Spezia July 26th 2012

Thanks to the rail strike (apparently a common occurence in Italy) we arrived a bit late. After some confusion over transport, our host (Matteo) picked us up from the train station and drove us back out to his place which was just out of La Spezia. There were already another couple of couch surfers in the (small, two bedroom) unit, and things got even busier when a larger group of five Estonian couch surfers arrived. They ended up camping on the front deck! Matteo's housemate Andrea cooked up an awesome spaghetti pasta which we munched into, before some other friends came over to visit and we sat around chatting on the deck for a few hours. The next day we found out at 7am that Matteo's flat was next to a church...with loud bells. The two ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence July 21st 2012

Ahh Italy where the coffee cart on the train actually has a mini espresso machine on it (none of this rubbish drip filter stuff). We had some issues finding a host in Florence, so had requested a couple of nights in a BnB. At least we thought we had! When we got to Florence we found a cafe with net access and checked and had no response (and then realised that the request had never been sent). So, we quickly sent another request to a different place and then went for a walk to find a park to chill out in. Thankfully the owner was fast at getting back to us and was able to confirm availability right away. We went and dropped our bags in the apartment (while he cleaned up after the last guests) ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome July 16th 2012

We had organised to stay with a host who lived not far from Tiburtina station which is on the line from the airport. His place was easy to find and in a great location (albeit a bit noisy sometimes). On the first night after a much needed shower we went out to a local place for dinner. It was a very relaxed little place where the food was cheap and good quality. mmmm good food. The waiter recommended a local beer which was delicious too and went well with our various bruschetta and pasta. In the morning we cut the metro into the Coloseum stops, which surprisingly was right next a well known Roman landmark. On that topic - apparently having the rumbling metro right next to the Coloseum is causing continual structural damage to the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Llafranc July 12th 2012

Our visit to Costa Brava didn't start all that well. We got off the bus, grabbed some items from the supermarket and waited for our host to pick us up. After a few minutes we saw an older lady riding towards us on a bike. Nena joked "hah - here she is". Turns out it was her and she then rode next to us back to her house. When we got there we were shown our room which was in the attic, and was full of stuff. The bed was one single fold out bed with another base kinda sitting on it but slightly across so that it was wider. The second base had no legs and if you lay on one side the whole thing flipped up and dumped the sleeper onto the floor. Also ... read more
