“Porque no quise caminar sobre la tierra como extranjera.” -Marjorie Agosin

This is why I want to travel.

Here is what it means:
“Because I didn’t want to walk the earth like a stranger.”

Hola Amigos!

I have created this travel blog to document my adventures in Costa Rica where I will be living and studying for the next three months. As all of the writing I will be doing for my classes here will be in Spanish I thought this blog would be a good way for me to unwind and to keep my North American friends updated.

Pura Vida a todos!

On Sunday night my program director Rebecca took me to the airport in San Jose to pick up the fam-jam. She and I sang musicals on the way there and then waited for about forty five minutes before we saw Dad's purposeful stride leading the pack through the airport. It turns out he's the same in every country. I'd been trying to describe my family to Rebecca as we waited for them, but it's hard to do them justice. I told her that Tom had mentioned that he wanted to practice his Spanish and she thought it would be fun to play with him a little and pretend she didn't speak a word of English. "Hola Tom? Como estas? Es una placer para conocerte. Su hermana me ha dicho muchas buenas cosas de ti. Estas emoniconado ... read more

I believe that we should start every adventure with high hopes and great expectations. I was thinking tonight about my expectations for this trip and to be honest, I can't even remember what they were. Maybe I didn't know what to expect. And really, how could I? I wouldn't have been able to imagine what it is like here before I arrived. I just couldn't have known. What I do remember is that my expectations for the weekend we went to Volcan Poas were not that high. When we went to Volcan Arenal the week before the weather was less than ideal. I don't mean to sound pompous, but I was under the impression that volcanoes were not that impressive. They are, undoubtedly, an incredible testament to the power of nature. But visually? To the untrained ... read more

"Cumpleaños, Oraciones, y Un Poco De Politica" (Birthdays, Prayers, and A Little Bit of Politics) Last month my Mama Tica celebrated her 59th birthday. She had a big party with her family, neighbors, and friends from church. She let Laura and I know that of course, her "hijas" (daughters) were invited too. While we are here, we are part of the family and we're made to feel so. I'm grateful for that. The party was fun because we got to meet a lot of new people. There are so many different contexts in which one can practice a second language. Perhaps because I am still frequently assigned to the "kids table" at family gatherings at home, I felt more comfortable starting the night off playing with Mami's grandchildren. I began by making feeble attempts to master ... read more

"Con Sus Dedos de Pie Debajo de la Espuma" (With your toes beneath the surf) I must begin this entry with some observations about new favorite art form: dance. I've always loved dancing but I feel my appreciation for it grows every day that I'm here. My two favorite types (both to watch and to attempt) are salsa and meringue. Most of the dancing I've been exposed to has been a direct result of the classes they offer to us on Tuesday and Thursday nights, but I have ventured out a few times to see what it's like out in the "real world". The university hosted a party the first week of classes and there was some salsa dancing. That night was almost like a culmination of a lot of my romanticized ideas about what makes ... read more

On top of the adventures we've been having on the weekends, our program director, Rebeca, has been organizing mini-excursions for us during the week. Our first outing was to the movies. I'll be honest, "Avatar" isn't the kind of movie I usually go to see but I'd been told over and over again that it was a cinematic experience that was not to be missed. So in early January I caught up with the rest of the world and everyone who went to see "Avatar" over Christmas break. The version I saw had Spanish subtitles but I got to wear the 3D glasses just like everyone else so I don't think I missed anything. It wasn´t hard to follow because the actors were speaking English for the majority of the movie, but those of you who've ... read more

I feel I owe you all an explanation. I know it's been quite a while since my last entry, perhaps you are wondering why you haven´t heard from me. The reason I have not been updating my blog is because I was enrolled in: INTERMADIO DOS. I´ve decided to dedicate the following entry to my academic pursuits here in Costa Rica so that you will understand that I was not intentionally neglecting my faithful blog readers :) La Universidad de Veritas really is an impressive institution. My classes here have been much more challenging than I expected. Our days are broken into two parts, in the mornings from 8-12 the school offers intensive Spanish classes and in the afternoon we have our electives. On our first day we each took a placement test to detemine our ... read more

First and foremost, I must say thank you. To all of you. It is easy to lose yourself in this wide world of ours, and I think that all of us, at one point or another need to be reassured that someone, somewhere, remembers who we are. Reading your comments at the end of the day makes my night. If anyone can inspire a 20-year-old girl to learn Spanish it's Gael García Bernal. "Ay que guapo es este muchacho". A good portion of my Friday morning intensive Spanish class was devoted to watching "The Motorcycle Diaries" a film which features the aforementioned Bernal. The movie is about the the famous/infamous Argentine Revolutionary Che Guevara, before he was....Che. While most people would recognize Che's likeness (which dawns the t-shirts of almost every moody would-be-teenage-rebel you've ever met) ... read more

The first thing I noticed when I stepped out of the airport in San Jose was the air. Even at 9:00 at night the air was warm. It felt like Florida. La Universidad de Veritas had arranged for someone to be there to pick me up and I was driven to my home stay with three other students. One was from Pennsylvania, another from Colorado, and a third from SCHENECTADY, NY. (She was more than a little surprised when I told her that was my mother’s hometown.) Our driver only spoke Spanish. I was so tired I didn’t understand anything he said except when he pointed out a transvestite on a street corner, but even that was a little confusing. I was the last student to be dropped off but my host family was waiting with ... read more

Tonight I am preoccupied by thoughts about my upcoming trip. I leave in 11 days and there is still so much to do. As I often do when I should be doing a million other things, I pulled out the memory box I keep under my bed and read through old newspaper clippings and birthday cards. A productive use of my time, I know. I found a drawing I did when I was fourteen-years-old. It features Charlie Brown, arms spread, nose in the air, with his mouth open so wide his tonsils are showing. I had written the following caption: "AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! Good Grief! I'm starting high school in two days...." I love this drawing. Clearly my fourteen-year-old self was perplexed by the prospect of entering high school. It stands to reason that my twenty-year-old self would ... read more
