All, We arrived in New Zealand 10 days ago. We met up with our third companion, Nate Wucherpfennig, at the airport in Christchurch. After renting a 6 berth campervan and figuring out how to run a manual diesel beast of a truck with the stick on the left hand side and getting used to driving on the wrong side of the road we were on our way. We spent the first night in Christchurch and then headed south to Dunedin, a small college / surf town on the southeast coast of the south island. It is pretty amazing driving through this country. The landscapes are so varied and each one is breathtaking in its own unique way. We spent the night in Dunedin and had an amazing Turkish meal while in town. The food here is ... read more
G'Day Mate, Arrived in New Zealand yesterday and met another roomie at the airport, Nate Wucherpfennig, so now there are 3 of us on the trip. Our time in Australia was great as we were able to have 4 great days of surfing and finally drink some water from a tap. The major accomplishment dealt with getting to Australia. We left from Kilimanjaro, Tanzania on a flight at 7:00am on Monday morning and arrived in Brisbane, Australia at 7:00pm on Tuesday. After renting a car and driving an hour south to Surfers Paradise we went out for some much needed western style nightlife. The next morning we woke up and headed straight to a surf shop and bought a couple boards. We got into the ocean right away at Coolangatta and caught a couple waves on ... read more
Jambo (Swahili for "hello"), We arrived in Tanzania after a two day battle with Nairobi and Kenyan Airways. It seems the baggage handlers were on an unofficial holiday and failed to put our bags on the plane a couple times. After getting through that issue we took a short tour of Dar Es Salaam. We went to a huge fish market right on the coast. Although our sense of smell has not been the same since, we had a great time and enjoyed seeing a wide variety of fish and shellfish. Sean, I made a couple contacts for you, Africa Wild will be under way shortly. After the fish market we were driving along the coast in a taxi and I took a picture of the beach. We were suddenly hailed down by a "policeman" waving ... read more
How Far Now? (Nigerian Broken English for "How are you doing?") Arrived into Lagos, Nigeria on Monday from Cairo (after going to bed at 1 am to witness the European Soccer Championships and getting up at 2 am to catch a 6 am flight). We took a puddle jumper to Abuja and met up with our man Abbas Abubakar at the airport. That night we ate a traditional Nigerian meal with Abbas' boss at his home. The meal included Mui Mui (pounded yam), Chicken Pepper Soup (didn't affect us then, but our paying the price dearly now), Elephant Fish and potatoes. That night we went to the local nightspot The Clubhouse, smoked a shisha and had a couple Star Lagers (local beer of Nigeria). Tuesday saw us explore the capital of Abuja a little more. We ... read more
Friends and Family, We are now a week into the adventure of a lifetime. Hard to believe that one week ago we were in Prarie du Chien, Wisconsin attending a wedding and participating in all forms of debauchery (note to self: do not drink 70 beers and watch the sunrise on the Mississippi river the night before you take a 12 hr flight through Amman, Jordan to Cairo, Egypt). Our trip started off with adventure from the very beginning as our taxi driver was harassed by the local police for some "baksheesh" (Arabic for tip or kick back). The ride from Cairo Airport to downtown at 10pm, which is actually rush hour, was a good representation for what the trip had in store for us. After we saw Mustafa drive for a short time Craig asked ... read more
