Tuesday, 25th October 2016 I woke up feeling really refreshed this morning from my comfortable futon. The weather in Naha was rather warm for late October with clear blue skies greeting me. I didn't have an itinerary to follow for my short stay here. Even though I haven't been to the northern half of the island where the touristy Aquarium and the Pineapple Park are located, I haven't have the intention to visit them during this trip either. Instead, I was perfectly happy to remain in Naha city today to spend sometime having an idyllic lunch at the Afternoon Tea Café. I visited the outlet within Ryubo Departmental Store which was next to my hotel. The environment was rather relaxed and inviting even though it was already teeming with people when I visited at 11.30am. I ... read more

Monday 24th October 2016 I managed to squeeze in a 4D3N Okinawa excursion in the midst of my Taiwan trip. I've done Okinawa in January 2013 and it is always good to be back to a familiar place with some new experiences to take away. The flight time from Taipei to Okinawa is a mere 70 minutes via Eva Airways. After a quick meal service onboard, my near-empty plane landed safely at Naha Airport. I took the 1625 hours flight and it was evening by the time I reached my destination. My hotel (Okinawa Kariyushi Lch Izumizaki Kenchomae Hotel) is a pleasant monorail ride from the airport station, located at the start of the mile-long Kokusai Dori (International Street). It is right next to the Ryubo Departmental Store that is home to a couple of nice ... read more

Sunday, 23rd October 2016 I spent sometime at the 921 Earthquake Museum today. Getting there was supposed to be very straight forward as the U Bus # 50 would bring me straight to the museum entrance within 45 minutes. However, for some reason, I waited to the point of giving up when the bus failed to appear after 45 minutes. I kept telling myself (and my legs) to persevere for the long wait. When the bus did arrive eventually, it was rather empty despite the long intervals in between the services. Perhaps that explained the low frequency since there was not much of a demand in the first place. The 921 museum was built on the site of a former elementary school in Taichung which was devastated by the powerful earthquake on 21st September 1999. I ... read more

Saturday, 22nd October 2016 Changhua is an easy train ride from Taichung Station and things were less complicated when I could use my Easy Card to pay for the journey. Finding the correct boarding point for the Lukang-bounded buses might be a little tricky and it pays to inquire about the information at the helpful tourist office where the staffs would be happy to provide you with a useful walking map. 40 minutes into my bus journey, I had arrived at the disused Lukang Old Station. This is the starting point of the town proper. A comfortable walk through the main thoroughfare, I had reached the Old Streets and the local market where I took a quick meal for lunch. After soaking in the old town's atmosphere and purchasing my wooden train souvenir, I headed back ... read more

Friday, 21st October 2016 So, on my final mid-haul trip for 2016, I decided to venture back to two familiar territories that I'm rather comfortable with. I would first fly into Taiwan where I would spend a couple of days in Taichung before heading to Naha, Okinawa. Making a side trip to Okinawa made sense since flight time was just slightly one hour from Taipei. On my return from Naha, I would make a stopover in Taipei before heading back to Singapore. Making use of EVA Air's promotion, I managed to spend slightly more than SGD 650 for my SIN-TPE-OKA-TPE-SIN routes. On the afternoon of 21st October 2016, I was ready to fly off to Taipei. Food onboard the flight was pretty decent where I had braised chicken with coconut milk sauce which tasted quite like ... read more

Saturday, 17th September 2016 Excerpt from my reviews online (with some editing) Stayed for 1 night over the weekend at the Holiday Villa recently. The location is great. It is located next to KSL City mall and plenty of local eateries. Within the hotel property, there is a Thai massage centre and the Doi Chang Coffee House. When we arrived at 12.45pm, we were nicely greeted by the bright and welcoming lobby. Check-in was really fast and efficient and we were really happy that our room was ready. We were given room 2129 at level 21 which commanded a fantastic view of the city. As this is a really new hotel, everything felt new and clean. Wifi, beds and rain shower were excellent. The minor gripe was the relatively warm air-conditioning at night. What we really ... read more

Monday, 22nd August 2016 The usual suspects on my last day in Bangkok revolved around massage, food and shopping. Early morning, I flew off to Healthland Spa @ Sathorn for my 2-hour body massage. I enjoyed it thoroughly as my body was still recovering from the long train journey from the day before. I met up with the guys for dinner @ Apinara Restaurant @ CentralWorld as it was touted as one of the best Thai restaurants in the Capital. Granted that the food was rather tasty, it was a forgettable experience with a rather heavy price tag. We didn't order a feast though. Just tried a couple of platters and small dishes to go with our rice meals. After dinner, S and myself headed to Tesco On Nut for some last minute shopping. The thing ... read more

Sunday 21st August 2016 I was up really early this morning in order to reach Hua Lumpong Railway Station before 6.30am. I had asked P to book a ticket for me on the weekend excursion train to Kanchanaburi and beyond. The Railway Station where I boarded my train was of a decent size and it was not as intimidating as I had envisaged. Getting my bearings right was very straightforward as the overhead screens clearly showed which platform I was supposed to go in order to board my train. The excursion train is a typical third class non-air-conditioned carriage that served its purpose even though not particularly comfortable for the 12-hour journey. I had always wanted to try out this route since my previous trip and this was sort of a personal achievement for me. Train ... read more

Saturday, 20th August 2016 The highlight of the day was our gorgeous afternoon tea at Shangri-La Bangkok. Four of us occupied a cosy corner overlooking the busy Chao Phraya River. With attentive service and great pastries, our time passed really quickly in the afternoon. In the evening, I caught up with P at the Greyhounds Café at Siam Centre. This was an easy walk from where I stayed. We knew one another when he was working in Singapore and it was always nice catching up with him whenever I was back in Bangkok. Even though I was quite full from the afternoon meal, we managed to order a few items from the menu to share as we chatted the evening away. The day certainly ended on a fruitful note with wonderful conversations and great company. I ... read more

Friday, 19th August 2016 We decided to ditch the budget carriers on this trip to Bangkok. Travelling on Thai Airways was a great choice with efficient service, comfortable seats and delicious meals. It helped that the airline was running some promotion when we booked our trip which narrowed down the price gaps between the budget and full-service carriers. We took the afternoon flight on Friday and had 4 full days in Bangkok before returning on Tuesday evening. I was looking forward to meet my Thai friend, P as well as taking the weekend train to Kanchanaburi. For my past 3 trips to Bangkok, I made it a point to catch up over dinner with P. It was nice to learn that he is getting married in March next year. His journey to marriagehood had not been ... read more
