The drive to San Jose from Ometepe afforded some very different views to what we had been seeing throughout the rest of Central America. There was quite a lot of modern architecture and less rubble and rubbish along the roads. At one point we even drove past a small housing community like those we have at home with matching houses and paved streets – I had seen nothing like it in the previous countries. We arrived at the hotel mid-afternoon and went for a quick introductory walk around the city – the first metropolitan city we had seen – which didn’t offer much more than the usual city sights... some nice parks, couple of museums, shop-loaded pedestrian strip. The next day, faced with not much else to do, I followed Amy and Chrissy to the National ... read more

Several extremely long bus rides and a border crossing later, we have made it into the town of Leon in Nicaragua. Supposedly a little colonial town, it seemed very much like a normal little city to me, with odd bits of European-looking architecture here and there and the requisite opulent cathedrals/churches dotted around the city. By the time we got in there wasn’t much time to do anything other than discuss the next day’s activities and a small orientation walk prior to heading out for dinner. Despite having only sat on a variety of buses all day, we were all wrecked and hit the sack early in preparation for the next day. A majority of the group headed off to climb one of the nearby volcanoes and then “volcano-board” down it using a type of wooden ... read more

My apologies in being so slack for the last couple of weeks... I am very slowly working on the last 3 countries of Central America. First day of the new tour with Tucan, we arrived in Copan (Honduras) early in the afternoon and after a quick lunch and introductory tour, we headed off for our afternoon activities. 7 others and I decided to hit up the hot springs located in the nearby mountain which proved to be QUITE a good choice. There were at least a dozen different pools into which the natural hot spring water was fed into via pipes and we were warned quite severely NOT to step in the actual spring as the water was approximately 70 degrees Celsius and therefore too hot for a quick bath. A friend told me later on ... read more

With our first tour behind us, Chrissy and I now had 6 days to rest and recuperate in Antigua before our next tour started. We moved into Terrace Hostel and found that somehow we had managed to book a private room with only ONE queen bed. Seeing as the rest of the rooms did not have a private bathroom, we decided to put up with each other as bedfellows for the next week in favour of private facilities – we are two ladies, after all! It was nice to be able to open our bags and not worry about having to re-pack them the next day, and consequently, our stuff went EVERYWHERE. It was nice to spread out. We spent our first non-tour day in Antigua shopping at the supermarket and then a long wander through ... read more

Although we left Belize rather reluctantly, we were excited to move on to Guatemala which was rumoured to be beautiful with lots to see and do, and importantly, cheap! Our first stop was the colossal ruins of Tikal, which is possibly the biggest and most famous site in Central America – you can easily spend at least 3 hours there visiting each of the many temples. One of the reasons the site is so famous is that a scene from Star Wars was shot on the steps of Temple 4, which is so high up it overlooks the treetops of the jungle below. The ruins are widespread and awe-inspiring, and our guide did a wonderful job of transporting us back in time to when the Mayans were living and breathing in the same place. We also ... read more

Looking for white beaches, perfect clear blue water, hot sun and mass amounts of rum punch? Welcome to Caye Caulker! Our tour group made the long 9hr trek (including a bus ride, 2 boat rides and 2 lots of border control) from Playa to the beautiful island of Caye Caulker off the Belizean coast and it was totally worth it. The island is tiny - there are no cars, only golf carts; no paved roads, only sand; and not much to do other than lay in a hammock on the beach with a panty ripper in hand (rum and pineapple). Our first day in we headed out into the coastal waters for a full day snorkelling tour organised through a group called Ragamuffin. As a large group of 16, we had a sailboat to ourselves and ... read more

Hola! Let me just start off by saying that Mexico is AWESOME! We stayed in Playa del Carmen for 4 days which is on the Yucatan Peninsula and loved every minute of it. We flew in mid-afternoon on Thursday to the Cancun airport and caught a bus transfer out to Playa, and walked the block and a half to our hostel. We were about 2 blocks away from the beach and 1 block from the main avenue (called 5th Av) so we were in prime position. Playa is a very touristy area and relatively expensive for Mexico and Central America, but it was explained to us that because the Peninsula is completely flat and situated on top of a layer of limestone, they have no crops and cannot grow or cultivate anything so they have to ... read more
