Hi there friends We are off tomorrow (Tuesday) on a trip to the USA. The first leg of the trip involves 31 days of touring through Nevada, Arizona, Utah and California starting and finishing in LA. We have hired a motorhome for this leg and will be following a plan I have put together to see the sights. We then fly up to Anchorage in Alaska and from there north again to Deadhorse, the very top of Alaska on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. Here we start a 17day guided tour through Alaska finishing in Anchorage. We fly back to LA, spend a few days (Shopping....) and then back home via the flying Kangaroo. We will attempt to update the blog regularly and show you some of the images I hope to get as we ... read more

Africa » Namibia February 4th 2008

Hello All Corinne and I have had an unfortunate incident which I will summarise here. During our tour with Wild Dog Safaris in Namibia we were camping at the Okajima/Africat complex about 200kms north of the capital of Windhoek. At 3am local time on the 2nd of February our camp was attacked. A group of men with guns and knives slashed our tents with knives and then pulled all of the 9 people in our group and the 3 guides from our tents and dragged us into the middle of the camp and pushed us to the ground, a few of us including me were punched and fell and had minor injuries like cut feet. A gunshot was fired in the air. Most of us were half naked and dazed and lights were shined in ... read more

Asia » Singapore January 27th 2008

Hi all Just a quick note to let you know we are off on our latest adventure. Currently at Singapore airport awaiting our flight to Johannesburg in South Africa. It is 3am Australian time as I write this, still have another 90mins until the flight leaves. Once we arrive in Joburg (at 7.30am local time) we have a 3 hour wait till the flight to Windhoek in Namibia. Should be there by 1pm local time. Will be a long day. Or is that long two days! Singapore airport is huge. Not sure if it is actually a shopping centre with an accompanying airport or what but it is an impressive facility, even has free internet access. We have to catch the train to another terminal for our flight out. Saw the worlds largest plasma screen (atleast ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro February 20th 2007

Today is our last day in Rio and then we head home via Buenos Aires, Auckland and Sydney. Hopefully no more than 30 hours on the go. Since our last blog we did some snorkeling in Bonito and then moved onto Rio for the Carnival. The freshwater snorkeling day at Bonito was good, got sunburnt however because you are not allowed to use sunscreen so it doesn’t damage the environment. The waterways are quite clear in places and the fish are about in numbers, not the same as snorkeling on a coral reef but still quite nice. From Bonito we got a minivan to Campo Grande (4hrs) and then a flight to Sao Paulo and then another onto Rio. Our first flight was late and we therefore missed our next flight and they put us on ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Foz do Iguaçu February 12th 2007

We are presently in Bonito in Brazil. The last few days we have been in the town of Foz do Iguazu in Brazil while visiting the Iguazu falls. The two days before that we were in Buenos Aires. BA did not impress us much, it is a large city, a bit dirty and with its share of problems. We got in late the first night courtesy of Aerolineas Argentinas and the hotel staff did not recommend we walk down to the end of town where some of the old buildings are I was hoping to photograph lit up at night. We checked it out anyway and there were a lot of police on the street so we walked up all the way. Unfortunately the buildings were poorly lit and not very photogenic so we walked back ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Chaltén February 6th 2007

Hola We are presently back in El Calafate just for the day. The last few days we have been in the town of El Chalten in the northern section of the Los Glaciares National Park. This is the premiere trekking destination in Argentina. The mountains are the main attraction, Monte Fitz Roy is the tallest in the park at 3405 meters and there are several others over 3000 meters. They are spectacular however not so much because of their height but because of their steep sides and glaciers, lakes and streams. The weather in El Chalten is similar to Torres del Paine. Like in TDP the mountains in the park where you trek are only a couple of kilometers from the massive Helio Sur (Southern Patagonian Ice Cap) which is the largest area of permanent ice ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate February 1st 2007

We are now back in El Calafate Argentina after visiting Torres del Paine (TDP) National Park in Chile for 5 days. It is a fantastic place for trekking and the views are spectacular. The French valley walk was great. We left about 8am and got back just after 6pm so it was a long day but worth it. During our stay we had some good weather and some not so good, struck winds the last two days. When we were walking down from Refugio Chileno we frequently had to stop and hunker down to prevent ourselves being blown off the path and down the steep mountainside. Gusts would have reached 60knots, wearing a backpack you literally get moved by the wind as you walk along and could easily get blown off the path. As I type ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia January 23rd 2007

Well my expedition voyage is over and I have lived to tell the tale. Overall the trip was amazing. The wildlife especially in South Georgia is staggering. We had some good weather and some bad weather. I can recall on the third night out around the Falkland Islands about 9.30pm hanging on for dear life in my bunk for about two hours trying to prevent myself ending up on the floor. But that was not the norm and overall you get use to the motion of the ship. Makes it hard to sleep some nights however, you have to lay on your back. I took some pills for the days of open ocean crossings and they pretty much did the trick and I never got sick. Some people were medicated every day of the trip and ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia January 3rd 2007

28th December 2006 First morning stayed in the Albatross Hotel. Awoke to have a shower non existent water pressure so used the shower in the next room. Walked around Ushuaia - bought some supplies for the boat - not much in the way of sweets/lollies they must not have much of a sweet tooth, however I could see how one could become an alcoholic here as the Bacardi 750mls is about $11 AUD. We had an evening hailstorm lasted about 20mins, hail looked like sleet. King Crab meal was nice but not as good as our sand or mud crabs in my option. Went to bed knowing over half the expedition crew still had not arrived. 29th December 2006 Second night at the Albatross I was awoken at 2.00am to a noise at the door, one ... read more
