This trip started off with a little more intensity than normally goes into one of my trips; of course I normally travel alone this time, however, I had 16 travel companions. We started our journey at Nick and Tricia’s place in Mesa, AZ. The group was a little slow to get moving as the night before we decided to consume an obscene amount of alcohol while playing tippy cup/flip cup. Things got a little “weird” that night, turns out that would be the theme of the entire extended weekend. Three vehicles were enough to get the majority of the part loaded up and on the road. We took off with: Bart, Blake, Sarah, Samantha (Sam), Nick, Tricia, Artie, John, Haley, Ashley, Josh, Brandon, Nicole, and me (Derek). Chris would be added before we made it out ... read more

The hot shower refreshed and energized me. I got dressed and headed out into the rain to find something delicious to eat. I went to a place called Saegreifinn, which is famous for its lobster soup. Saegreifinn is a small place located right on the harbor not far from the downtown area. The owner is an old fisherman who still goes and negotiates the best catches from the ship captains. He reminds me of the soup Nazi from Seinfeld. Know what you want if you plan to go in there. I had the lobster soup and a halibut kebab. Both were absolutely excellent. I can’t remember ever having fresher fish, and the lobster soup was amazing. If you go to Reykjavik go eat at this place. I walked around a bit after dinner and then headed ... read more

Runtur on Saturday is like Runtur on Friday dialed up. Glasses being thrown from balconies, security kicking in doors of restrooms because two chicks were in there for about 15 minutes together doing God only knows what, an old dude getting punched in the face while moshing to Rage Against the Machine, an 18 year old girl revealing that she has slept with 30 guys at that point in her life. Runtur is crazy folks. It reminds me of New Orleans with a younger age demographic and involving people from all over the world who have a Vegas, what happens in Reykjavik, stays in Reykjavik attitude. I had decided to hang out with the group of Americans that I had met the night before. Aaron and Lindsay were going to watch a few metal bands and ... read more

I have never claimed to be great at partying; of course I didn’t even start drinking until I turned 25 years old. However, I have partied in Las Vegas, Mexico, NYC, Thailand and all over Europe. They do not compare to what I saw on Runtur. I may not even be able to call it Runtur, as I stayed at one place, Oliver’s because it was ladies night and there was a ton of action. This thing didn’t even really get started until 1:00am. People from all over the world were there drinking like crazy and dancing. I witnessed some kid, probably only twenty, getting a lap dance from a girl who was absolutely wasted. In fact they tried to go together down to the water closet and fell down the stairs. He busted his chin ... read more

Today I toured the Golden Circle and went snowmobiling on the second largest glacier in Europe. The Golden Circle is made up of three very unique sights. Pingvellir, (pronounces Thingvellir), Gullfoss and Geysir. Danni , my guide for the day, picked me up about 8:30 this morning. Considering I got home at 2:00am the night before and get up about 7:30 this morning I did not wake easily. Anyhow, I made it to the shower, which smells a bit of sulfur by the way, read rotten eggs, went down to breakfast, suited up and was on my way. I climbed into the closest truly functional thing to a monster truck. I’ll tell you more about the functional part later. Once in the two of us headed to another hotel to pick up five fairly hung over ... read more

Hello Reykjavik, Iceland! I got in this morning about 6:50 am. It was still dark after I had come through customs and met up with my driver Dennis. Dennis gave me a few insightful tidbits on the way to Hotel Fron. (Like throne but with an F.) I first noticed the lack of trees he told me that we were on a young lava field, some 800 years old. They do have trees, it’s just that not much grows in this particular part but moss. He then related a joke, “Do you know what to do if you get lost in an Icelandic forest?” “Nope” I replied. “Stand up.” Evidently there are few trees, but many bushes and grasses. So some good advice to start my trip. We also passed one of Iceland’s five aluminum melting ... read more

I flew into Denver Thursday about 1:30 and made the two, or so hour drive through the mountains to meet my family in Breckenridge. Mom, Dad, Maleka and Maleka’s little friend Natalie. It was a beautiful day driving up through the mountains, and it got me excited to get on my board. By the time I had gotten to the condo the girls and Dad were in the pool. I decided to join them there after dropping my board off to get edged and waxed. We met Ryan from California and Emily from Minnesota in the pool. They were throwing snowballs up over a 20 foot wall where three hot tubs were located. I could not resist so I joined in on the fun, jumping out of the pool, grabbing handfuls of snow, and then launching ... read more

On Friday night, the 18th, I flew into Denver where I met up with Montserrat. Montse had never been skiing before, but was willing to go. One of the few who were willing to, even with a free condo thrown in, what is wrong with people? Montse is a friend from Mexico, who now lives in San Francisco. She is adventurous and a ton of fun, and made a great addition to the trip. We waited for, what seemed like hours, for my board to come around and met Steve outside of the airport. After we loaded up we made the 45 minute or so drive to Steve and Erin’s place. (Steve and Erin are friends from Omaha. Steve used to work with me and I met Erin through Steve. They both attended Creighton and got ... read more

I was out in San Francisco for DreamForce by SalesForce.com. There were about 20,000 attendees this year to be part of the discussion on technology. A big topic this year was cloud-computing, as SFDC is pretty much the go to source for cloud trends. The big announcement was SalesForce Chatter that will launch next year. Marc Benioff, SalesForce.com CEO, kicked off the conference with a very long winded speech where he tried to solidify his own importance. Rivers of people left before the keynote was finished; I was swept up as well. Gen. Colin Powell was another story. I was amazed with how engaging the General was. He talked about the low marks that he received in college and his affinity for technology. He spoke about his years with the Regan administration and how he ... read more

I am going to miss this place. I will miss all of the great things I have learned and the friends that I have made. People like Reem, Bamboo, Ja-O, Dul, Suzie, Gai-O, Larissa and Headrick, Tim, Paula, Pat, Scott and Yeen, and Sangwit. I have made plans to see a few of them again, friends like Sophie, Kirsty and Danielli, but even if not I will never forget them. I will miss little things like the pot of water and half coconut on a stick outside of my bungalow used to wash the sand from my feet. The geckos sticking to the side of buildings. The sea spray on my face while moving through the waves in the long tail. Running in the soft sand as the sun came up over the ocean. I will ... read more
