05.00 Hours Tuesday 13 March Up before dawn to catch the train to Chittorgarh. Take a rick to the station and check the train platform, everybody is walking across the track but I decide to use the footbridge. I buy some chai on the platform and dip my cinnamon roll into it that I brought last night . Taste’s good. I am in AC chair and it’s ok. Not long before the trains leaves I am joined by a fellow English traveller. Chris is in India for a month and on his way to Shimla. That’s a fair old way up in the mountains to the north. Shimla was the British retreat when the summer in Delhi got too hot for them. That's why it looks like an English town. Like somewhere in Cheshire it's said. ... read more

08.00 hours Monday 12 March After a long day yesterday, today is just chill and rest around Udaipur before I leave very early tomorrow morning. I go to the travel man who booked my car and sort my train tickets for tomorrow. The first train will take from Udaipur to Chittorgarh. In the afternoon I will take another train To Bundi. Chittorgarh is 2.5 hours away and Bundi is 3 hours from Chittorgarh. With a big fort to see in Chittorgarh it will be a long day. I decide to get some stamps and my rough guide tells me there is a post office not far down the road by the lake. I wander up and down the road but cannot find the place. I bump into Ray Mears who tells me he’s been looking for ... read more

07.00 Hours Sunday 11 March Paco and Antonia arrive outside the Kesar Palace and a few minutes later the car arrives and we are on our way. It’s a 2.5 hour drive to the first stop which is Kumbhalgarh Fort. The road is not the best but if we want to see the fort and the Jain temple at Ranakpur then a long day by car is the only. I brought some nankeen (a sort of savoury stick) and we share it as we go. We arrive at the fort and spend the next 3 hours wandering about. After that the driver heads towards Ranakpur, we stop some 20 kilometers before and have a good if overpriced buffet lunch. (It was 6 quid each ) We then set off for Ranakpur. Again we spend a couple ... read more

08.00 Hours Saturday 10 March After a disturbed nights sleep through barking dogs, loud music and the ultra loud call to prayer from the Jagdish temple just up the road it’s out into the streets of Udaipur . But not after a further one hour shower to remove some of the Holi colour. Then a head and face shave. It’s theCityPalacetour first after some snaps down near LakePicholaand of course a shot of The Lake Palace (of Octopussy fame). The City Palace tour is a bit hectic as the place is packed with Indians as they are still on holiday from Holi, so it is a very slow going as at every turn there are queues of what seems like 50/60 people waiting. It takes 2.5 hours to get round and as I exit the Palace ... read more

22:00 Hours Friday March 09 The bus drops me off in Udaipur, but who knows where, not me. Again I throw my trust to at a rick driver who whizzes through the night to find the Kesar Palace hotel. He stops and parks the rick and tells me to get out. I take my bags and follow him down the dusty and fume filled street. We turn right up a smelly alleyway, I stop and check, there is a hotel sign painted on the wall, we are in the right place. Up the alleyway past a couple of other guesthouses and into the Kesar. I pay the driver 70 rups - a quid good business. The manager takes me up to room 302 on the third floor to show me the room and get my approval. ... read more

09.00 Hours Friday 09 March After the madness of yesterday it's a late breakfast and see what we can do about getting to Udiapur. I always knew that this leg had to be done by bus as there is no train south to Udiapur. I speak to boss in the Durag Niwas and he tells that there is a bus at 14.00 hours and he will look into it. He returns to tell me they are all full , everyone returning home after Holi. He will call and see if there are any cancellations. i sit and wait and drink chai. He comes back at 13.20 and says he got me a sleeper (during the day?) but who cares we are on the bus. Off I go after saying goodbye to my fellow Holi revellers. I ... read more

10.00 Hours Thursday 08 March It’s HOLI. So were do we start. There are all kinds of preparations already done as I come down stairs. Loads of food and sweets. Lots of colored power everywhere. And then it just kicks off with people throwing the powder everywhere and I mine everywhere. All over any one that moves no matter if in the house or out. Oh and there’s a lot of water thrown about to make the colour stick I did cover myself in oil before hand to try to ease the clear up job. There is an awful lot of alcohol – Beer, Whiskey and Rum to mention a few. You have to drink it the Indian way I am told, that’s from the bottle that someone else holds. Anyway we did a not so ... read more

08.00 Wednesday 07 March After a late night to bed it's up early to check the guesthouse over. I made a good choice following on from the great arrival welcome last night, I have a big room with double bed a sheet and blanket. Doors on to a verandah and a table and some chairs. Also a large attached bathroom with plenty of hot water. I am given the usual soap , 2 big towels and toilet paper. Down to breakfast of cornflakes , eggs on toast and chai. The guesthouse is 30 minutes walk to the centre of the town (The Clock Tower). I make my way over the railway footbridge and dismiss the rick drivers on the other side and carry on walking towards town. I walk through the markets to the far side ... read more

08.00 Wednesday 07 March , 2012 Planning, Forward thinking, Horizon scanning all go into the mix when you plan a journey. Unfortunately none of the above is aces in my pack. Jaisalmer to Jodhpur is 220 miles and most of it is through the desert, so what happens when a train speeds through the desert. Yep DUST and not just any old dust SANDY DUST. Sleeper class is not AC, and on the back of that is not a sealed carriage. It has an outer grill and an inner window – none of which are tight. In fact the draught is like a dyson exhaust. We have all been on the beach on holiday somewhere and someone has walked passed half pissed and kicked sand in the air and your sandwiches and you got covered. Well ... read more

Monday 05 March 20.00 Hours After another walking tour and watching the Jaisalmer day pass, it’s time to find some grub I treat myself to an up market meal at Nachana Haveli Nachana Haveli Heritage Hotel on the edge of town. In I tramp my rups as good as anyone else’s and take a seat up in the rooftop restaurant. I have a couple of fresh lime sodas and order the Keema Mutton Matar (Goat with peas) all mutton in India is goat. Dal Makhani (Black Gram cooked overnight and at the last minute cream & butter is added) you can get Dal Makhani at home in some Indians but not like this. Jeera rice and some papads. The rooftop is cool as the temperature drops swiftly at night and we have some traditional Rajasthani musicians ... read more
