We headed off from Mieke’s on Monday morning loaded up with left over Mussaman and Navratan curries, Red rice pork and Samosa filling courtesy of Irene and Ritchie and Boeterkoke (Dutch butter cake) from Mieke. I wonder how long it will take GMan to forgive me for forgetting to pick up the home made Citrus tart from Mieke’s fridge? We reciprocated with homemade Lime Butter which Chris whipped up on Saturday. Less than 40 minutes later we headed out from Coolgardie on the next part of our adventure. We set off to rediscover some of the areas we used to frequent when we lived in the region. Much to our surprise we discovered that there is now a tourist trail nearly 1000 kms long which explores many of the areas we planned to visit. Because of ... read more

Some football fans really put their support for their team out there. How about the fellow who has painted his house to support the dockers. Very close to where your house was Barbara and Robert. Would have offended your eyes everytime you drove past. Personally I think it is great. The photograph really doesn't do it justice. We stopped in front of our house in Collins Street to take a photograph and a lady was watching, so we told her we used to own the property. She is the current owner and took us inside to have a look at what it was like now. All the Victorian decoration we put in had been eliminated long before she bought it, however all the lead lights I made were still in place. I photographed them all and ... read more

Approximately 4 years ago Kalgoorlie Boulder was hit by an earthquake which caused a lot of damage, the most severe in one block of the main street in Boulder - Burt Street. Boulder has long been the poor relative of Kalgoorlie but as a result of this earthquake there is a project to revitalise the area with a Heritage upgrade underway. The signs are on the scaffolding as you enter underneath it. Shops are operating for very long periods of time under these conditions. Buildings which have been completed are very impressive. We went to the Recreation hotel for lunch as it was recommended for their wood fired pizza, but the oven had not yet been lit so we settled for very posh looking chicken schnitzels. As we entered the restaurant, Sheffield's, named after a former ... read more

There are lots of people from all over Africa here in the Goldfields. We found a shop for them on Burt Street Boulder and decided to send you some photos of the various products. IGA had huge gem squash for sale. We ended up buying a Durban Malay curry base and chilli biltong and pepper biltong. The shop owners make some of their own bilton for sale. We had a lovely chat, they are from Zimbabwe actually.... read more

When I was in my 20's a couple of men in Kalgoorlie got the idea to dam a creek about 12 kms from town and to turn it into a lake and water recreation reserve. It became an eventuality and Lake Douglas, one of the blokes names was Dougie Daws. There was never a lot of water in it over the years and the actual dam wall leaked, however it did provide a nice picnic and camping spot for the weekends. Also a lover's lane of sorts. After the construction work was completed parts of the surrounding area were very barren but now regrowth has reached maturity and the area is a haven to bird life and there are plenty of shrubs just beginning to flower - most especially eramophlias. The amount of bird song is ... read more

We have done it again, managed to ensure that rain has drenched both the Eyre Peninsula as well as the whole Eyre Highway. The majority of this blog is about the sky. We headed out from Ceduna on our way to the Head of the Bight where the best whale viewing in Australia is located. According to the website there should have been 8 whales to view. The season has not yet started properly. Thank heavens we asked before we paid our money. The people in charge said there were two whales in the bay - and the bay is huge- but the people who had just returned from the viewing area said they only saw a few dolphins. As the last time we came to the Bight there were 68 whales we decided not to ... read more

I last wrote early on Monday 26th just a couple of days ago when we planned to go and check out the Lincoln National Park and were stuck in the van because it was raining so hard. Instead we decided to drive the 45 kms to Port Lincoln and treat ourselves to a lunch of fresh fish and chips. I can see your face from here Barbara. We headed off into the rain and managed to get to PL in time for an early lunch and went hunting for a fish and chip shop. We found one and it was closed. In desperation we went into some stores and asked the staff. They all looked at us blankly and the consensus was the fish and chip shop which was closed or go to a hotel. What ... read more

We were reluctant to leave Yeldurknie Weir - such a lovely, quiet place. We were all ready to head off and I noticed a lovely gum flower (erythrocorys native to the Dongara area in WA) and stepped out to take a photograph. When I returned to the car no Chewie. He was eventually found being a Koala. First sign of naughty behaviour this trip. Drove into Cleve and filled the car. Most small towns now appear to have a special entry gimmick and Cleve's is a corrogated iron sculpture of a border collie guarding each entrance. We couldn't find the museum we wanted to visit and when we consulted our tourism information discovered we had to call to make and appointment to have it opened for inspection. Didn't have time for that. We had visited another ... read more

Having received excellent news about Robert’s recovery we headed off from Woomera on Monday 19thMay around 8:30 am. Needless to say he has recovered extremely well and is coming home today, 6 days, amazing. Before leaving we needed to get a replacement gas bottle, ours was empty, and decided to invest in another tub of a wonder product we discovered “Tru Blue Garlic Butter Spread”. Made in Maddington WA. Enormously expensive in Woomera but just in case... We headed to Pimba to top up the fuel tanks and bumped into Wayne’s mates from the Ulysses club again. Once on the road to Port Augusta we discovered we were roughly 150 kms away, we had not taken into consideration the 200 kms we travelled from Brinkworth to Port Augusta in our calculations of how far we had ... read more

We have been here at the Woomera Caravan Park for 4 nights waiting to hear about the outcome of Robert's operation. Things went very well indeed. He came out of theatre and we all went to bed knowing he was in ICU and not yet fully awake. The news this morning is that he is sitting up in bed and eating his breakfast! Remarkable really, Big Barb thinks he will make his target of getting home on day 5. He obviously did not have the same issues around his breathing tube as he did last time. For those of you concerned about our water problems again it was nothing really. The jubilee clip just needed another half a turn to stop a drip. The problem was that the screw to turn was facing the inside of ... read more
