after a 10 day stay in North Shore, Auckland we picked up our crazy little campervan and headed to Northland and the beautiful bay of Paihia. From our campsite base we spent Saturday up at Cape Reinga - see separate posting about that. On Sunday we took the ferry to the quaint little town of Russell and saw Neil Oliver filming for an episode of Coast. We even ate in the same place for lunch but thankfully he didn't pester us while we were eating! Lesley had green lipped muscles! Yes, they have green rims on their shells and the wobbly bit in the mid flexible, whatever it is called, was huge. I stuck to simple 'man food' an Angus beef & chorizo burger with beer battered chips ? ... read more

Oh my goodness, New Zealand is the most beautiful country. Amazing views at every turn. Somehow it just keeps getting better and better. Long twisty road trip today from Paihia to Cape Reinga, the northern most tip of New Zealand and a very spiritual and important area for the Maori people. We felt very moved and privileged to be there and both had quiet little chats with those sadly no longer with us. ... read more

We got away from Auckland for the weekend and drove up the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsular from Thames to Coromandel town then across to Whitianga, Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. The most incredible scenery. Changes every 5 km! Lush green hills, beautiful beaches. Loved it. Took our breath away. ?... read more

Feb 15th. Arrived around midday From Melbourne. Clocks gone on a further 2 hours so we are 13 ahead of UK time now. First impressions - it's hilly! But we like the atmosphere Downtown and Central. Nice old buildings to explore. The Auckland area will be our base for at least the next couple of weeks. We have some voluntary work lined up for 10 days or so and will have time to get out and explore too. Feb 17th. Took the local bus into the city. Went up the Sky City tower and to some great pics. Feb 18th. Late lunch at Degree Bar in Viaduct Harbour watching all the big pleasure cruisers and private sailing yachts mooring up. Feb 19th. Took the 12 minute ferry ride across the harbour to Devonport. More of a ... read more

Arrived in Melbourne Feb 12th For our last 2 nights in the campervan. Site packed. Pitched up in their overflow carpark with no hook up but not a problem. FEB 13th. Got local transport into city today and free tram around the centre. Lunch alongside the Yarra River at The Pilgrim Bar on Federation Wharf. Thunderstorm hit late afternoon and hardly stopped all night. FEB 14th. Our last day in Australia. Took camper back and dropped rucksacks off at airport until later. Headed back into the city and made our way on the free trams right to the MCG for the cricket. Amazing experience. Over 84,000 in a fired up crowd. Result didn't go England's way but it was a great day ? Then it was the tram back to the coach station, with a nice ... read more

Feb 10th At last, the Great Ocean Road proper! Our drive from Adelaide down to the south coast of South Australia and east toward Melbourne was pretty amazing But nothing could prepare us for the beauty and spectacle that awaits on the Great Ocean Road from East of Port Fairy and on to the 12 Apostles. We stopped many times to park up and walked through the scrubland to viewing points perched atop crumbling cliffs but boy oh boy was it worth it!! London Bridge, a massive chunk of rock cut away from its peninsula over the years. The Bay of Islands, more massive lumps eroded by the passage of time. The Grotto, The Arch then our favourite Loch Ard Gorge, a huge cut away into the limestone forming two magnificent coves joining at a white ... read more

We were sad in many ways to leave Adelaide. Such a great city and we really enjoyed our 3 days there. But now onto the next part of our big adventure and the Great Ocean Road from South Australia to Melbourne awaits..... Day 1. Friday 6th Feb. Picked up our VW Camper van. Got an upgrade to a virtually new vehicle and a refund of half day rental as we had to wait an extra hour for it to be prepared ? Left Adelaide early afternoon for short drive due south to Victor Harbour. Hoped to spot whales and dolphins but none to be seen. Headed eat a few km to Port Elliot for 1st over night stop. Beautiful little bay with fine sandy beach. Very calm and peaceful. Would like to stay longer but we ... read more
