So as a few of you may know Tom has asked to take some time apart so this will be just the Laura blog soon :( I have my own place nearby a coworker and am loving my new job, I will post pictures soon. I am safe and happy, and feeling very capable. I feel very lucky that I have this job because otherwise this would have been a nightmare. I am SO SO SO thankful for my supportive coworkers and the atmosphere I work in :) I am not sure what the future holds for me and Tom right now, but I have good feelings about my future and my friends here in Beijing. LOVE LOVE LOVE... read more

These photos are from about a month ago, some tourist-y stuff we did in Changzhou, coming soon: video of Tom's silly niece singing and video of one of my students reading her letter to "Mr. Hotdog". I really like my new job and the curriculum and the staff are amazing, I have fun everyday :) I am getting really good at getting around on my own and I can practice my Chinese with my co-teachers. ... read more

We finished all of our contract cancellation and everyone told us that they understand it's not personal, just business. It was relatively painless! Everything is signed and now we are just waiting for our business visas to come back from the police station, while we wait for the processing we are doing all the silly tourist stuff in Changzhou. We both feel a lot of weight off our shoulders and are enjoying having free time before we start working somewhere else. I cant wait to go back to Beijing and I am thrilled at the idea of teaching Kindergarten! We plan to be back in Beijing by Tuesday... we are watching a crab race on TV right now, China is weird!... read more

I guess I was unspecific about our plans, we have many job offers in Beijing (with good pay). Also, we have legitimate legal reasons to cancel the contract not just due to the scheduling problems. I am more interested in working in an ESL kindergarten in Beijing while Tom is not sure, he could be a translator or teach math/science. Anyways we will be fine, I have included a picture of us when we went to see a play that Tom's sister funded and produced.... read more

first meeting was today... the nice meeting, where they apologize a bunch. On Monday is the blaming meeting where they try and say quitting is our fault and charge us money for breaking the contract. Hopefully we can keep our sh** together and call it even. Send us positive energy and thoughts... read more

So even tho we LOVE our students at Changzhou we can't deal with how flaky the staff and people are anymore! They don't tell us when we are working or when our holidays our... etc etc, plus some other annoying stuff. So we gave them our two weeks notice and lucky for us our two weeks notice falls on the two weeks that the freshmen have military training, so we are thru with that school. I have very mixed feelings because I felt very attached to my students, I will miss them. We are moving to Beijing and living with Tom's sister Wentong, which is great because lots of family is close by, we eat with them 5 times a week if not more! Soon I am going to cook for them, they requested mased potatoes ... read more

I had all three classes today 8am - 3:50pm, long day but much better than yesterday. Everyone picked English names so I would not embarrass myself trying to say their names. Explaining why "Gay" "Lucifer" and "Dick" were not good names was HILARIOUS. Also there were some names like "JackBauer" "Coffee" "Paper" "Apple" "Blue" and "Clean" lolololzzzzzzzzzz After a while everyone settled on a name, lots of people picked "Jack" and "Kobe". Everyone seems to be understanding my instructions and progressing well, yay. -Laura p.s. Lucifer changed his name to Dante... :) ... read more

So my Chinese learning has not been progressing as fast as planned, I am here to tell you CHINESE IS HARD. I keep saying it wrong, today was hard I woke up late this morning and have had lots of trouble with computers. I also got very discouraged today when I boy snuck out of my class early, literally made a run for it, also my last class was impatient and hard to work with, my spirits are a little down today as said before, staying optimistic. So far my power point presentations have been a big hit and I love working with them, and today my fav class turned in their first homework assignment and it looks good YAY. Anyways all of the bad stuff that is going on today can be overshadowed by the ... read more

My first day of class today and I was very nervous! My first class was engineering students and their were about 25 boys and one girl. My second class was commerce majors and it was about 2/3 girls. In my first class it was over 32 degrees C in the class room and I was sweating up a storm! My students looked legitimately worried, lol, I was so embarrassed! Students kept passing me tissues to wipe the sweat and all their 7-ups and water, face = red. So far I have been AMBUSHED and I do mean ambushed, by two excited freshmen who wanted my phone number so when I have time we can 'play' I'm not sure what this means but Tom says they just want help with their English. The 1st ambush was at ... read more
