Well, this is it. Our final stretch in Australia. We are leaving Myall Lakes for Sydney. For once it didn’t rain during the night and it was nice and sunny when we got up. The benefit of this is that the tent and the ground sheet were dry for the 1st time whilst we packed them away. This was a good thing as we won’t be using them again for about 3 weeks until we get to Christchurch at the end of February. The drive from Myall Lakes to Sydney was pleasant enough until we got into Sydney proper. We were merrily driving along looking at the scenery when all of a sudden the road we were on turned into a toll road going over the Sydney Harbour bridge. Now this at first wouldn’t seem like ... read more

Bye bye Brisbane, hello Lamington National Park. As it was only a short drive over to the Park we had a bit of a sleep in the day we were leaving Brisbane. With my trusty navigator by my side we merrily headed out of Brisbane with a slight detour to a scenic lookout over the city. The views were pretty spectacular but the sun behind the thick layer of clouds was in the wrong spot so we didn’t get any decent pics. As we had the opportunity we decided to make a quick side trip to Surfers Paradise of the Gold Coast. Perhaps get a bit of surfing in, maybe catch some rays, anything beachy and relaxing. Some bad planning on my trusty navigators part got us stuck in morning rush hour traffic in Brisbane and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Australia Zoo February 9th 2010

After a great time on Fraser Island, we made our way down to Brisbane (Monday morning). We had 2 days in Brisbane and had decided to go to the Australia Zoo (Steve Irwin’s Zoo) on one of those days. Because the zoo is about 70km north of Brisbane we decided to go there straight from Hervey Bay, which meant an early start, as it was about a 3 hour drive! But that wasn’t hard to do (getting up early) as the rain came down hard that night and into the morning. I must say that we have got putting up and taking down the tent, in the rain, down to a fine art. But this is getting beyond a joke. Ha ha!!! We got to the zoo shortly after it opened (Billy’s driving throughout this trip ... read more

Apologies but this blog should have gone in before the Blue Mountains one. We drove further down the coast from Port Macquarie to Myall Lakes National Park. The drive was pleasant and took just over 2hrs. To get into the Park from the Northern end we had to catch a ferry. This is probably the smallest ferry and shortest trip we will ever take. The ferry couldn’t have taken more than 4 cars and the whole trip was probably less than 100m. The national park consists of a number of lakes and also takes in about 20km of coastline. There are a number of campsites located throughout the park. You aren’t able to book any campsites so I was a bit worried in case they were all full up. This was a needless concern as we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island February 5th 2010

We were up bright and early this morning for our trip to Fraser Island. I wasn’t sure what to expect as all I really knew about it Fraser Island was that it is the worlds biggest sand island. So I am thinking the Kalahari surrounded by water. Our tour guide picked us up just after 7am and we headed off to catch our ferry over to the island. We picked up a number of other island tourists along the way but fortunately the majority were just doing a 1 day trip and we were on the 2 day. It just so happened that it was spring tides so when we arrived at the ferry the water was just about up to road level. The majority of the mangroves were completed submerged with only the tips of ... read more

Well......................................needless to say that the weather did not improve once we arrived back to Airlie Beach, but we were rejuvenated after a relaxing time on a tropical island and a quiet, comfy sleep. Although, I have to admit that I did not even make it a week before I had to have a break from the tent. In my defence, if it wasn’t for the rain, I think I would have lasted longer! Long Island is a beautiful tranquil island and I would love to go back (when the sun is shining). We caught a ferry from Airlie Beach and it took about 40mins to get to Long Island. We spent the last day relaxing in Airlie beach. The weather DID NOT improve, still rainy, so we decided to take a drive to Cedar Creek Falls. ... read more

We left Cairns and were meant to stop at Mission Beach for a night before heading on down to Townsville and then the Whitsundays but, given the constant rain that we have had and it looking like another Cyclone (Olga) may be coming we decided to stop in Mission Beach for lunch, see what it was like and probably head down to Townsville the same day. When we got to Mission Beach it was very overcast and stormy so didn’t look the greatest but I can only imagine how nice it must look on a good day. There is a big island offshore which creates a nice backdrop. As we finished lunch the heavens opened so we packed up and headed on to Townsville. Our campground in Townsville was in a place called Rowes Bay and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City January 22nd 2010

Our flight to Cairns was fine - except it turned into a 3 hour flight (as Cairns is 1 hour behind Sydney) and the seats were cramped for Billy (not much space at all) We picked up our car without any problems - a lovely Toyota Corolla. We had decided to spend the day up in Port Douglas (as the weather wasn’t the greatest - and we were hoping it would improve) Port Douglas is about an hour drive (65km) north of Cairns - a lovely drive along the coastline with some beautiful beaches along the way. Port Douglas has a 4 mile beach lined with palm trees. Very picturesque and would be even better on a sunny day. They had cordoned off an area in the sea for swimmers - weighted nets to stop ‘stingers’ ... read more

Our flight from Jhb to Sydney was ok, we were given the 2 seats in the middle of the 4 which I personally think are the worst possible seats but in the end it wasn’t too bad. I slept on and off for about 4 hrs but Sandra slept the whole way; just kidding she dozed less than I did. Food was ok although Sandra was mortified when there was no pudding with the dinner service. Fortunately, just before she was about to go up to the Captain and complain, they came around with ice lollies and all peace and harmony in the universe was restored. We arrived in Sydney at 14:30 after about a 12hr flight and knew that we still had passport control and customs/quarantine to get through. We were in the hotel about ... read more

We have just spent our last week in SA with my family in the Drakensberg - Castleburn (Southern Berg). We had such a fun time. Greg, Debbie and Caitlin; Graham and Carryn joined us for the weekend. Dite joined us later in the week. We tried some flyfishing - Duncan caught about 40 fish!!!!!! (he put most of them back). Duncan had brought tubes with him and we tubed down the river - not much fun cos it took about 2 hours and we collected a few scrapes and bruises along the way. After 2 nights of hard rain, Duncan and Billy decided to tube the river again.......................... it took them 30 mins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On Tuesday my dad had booked for us to drive up Sani Pass (4x4 style) It was quite hair raising (and bumpy) but ... read more
