From Arches our next destination was Boulder in Colorado. This involved crossing the Rocky Mountains and with a planned detour to Aspen we were looking at about an 8hr drive so we were up before sunrise to get an early start on the day. We packed up the tent and watched the sun come up before having breakfast and heading off. The road from Arches to Colorado wasn't the most scenic or inspiring we have been on but the fact that we were on an Interstate Highway meant we could cover the ground fairly quickly. We arrived in Aspen and it wasn't quite what I was expecting. It wasn't as quaint as I thought it would be. This is probably attributable to the fact that we are out of winter, and whilst there was still snow ... read more

We left the cool, snowy Bryce Canyon and were hit by the heat of Arches National Park. It was a long drive but it was broken up by a scenic drive through Capitol Reef National Park (a National Park created by a fold in the earths crust. The temperature in Arches was probably 25'C but compared to wintery weather in Bryce it felt quite tropical and we were loving it. Arches National Park is made up of yip you guessed it ............... many sandstone arches (around 2500) created by the natural process of weathering over millions of years. On our first day we viewed as many arches and rock formations as we could. We got to see the famous balancing rock and delicate rock (from a distance); two arches called the 'windows'; skyline arch; broken arch ... read more

It would have been good to have spent an extra day in Zion National Park, but if we did that for all the places we visited, i think we would be travelling until Christmas! We can't always have things go our way! The drive was not that far from Zion to Bryce so we explored a bit of Zion before we left. It was not the best of weather, but at least it was not raining. We managed to see the Court of the Patriachs which is 3 large rocks named Abraham; Jacod and Isaac. And then, on the way out of the park, we stopped for a short walk for an overlook of the Canyon. At least we got a glimpse of the beauty of Zion. Before we reached Bryce Canyon we drove through Red ... read more

From the Grand Canyon we had to make a detour to Flagstaff to drop off Duncan at the airport. Flagstaff's airport isn't the worlds largest airport and on the way in I only saw planes with propellers. After making sure we had the right airport on the right day we said our farewells to Duncan and wished him well on his marathon trip back to Durban whilst we headed off to Monument Valley. Monument Valley is situated on a Navajo Reservation and the closer you get the more you feel like you are in the middle of an old western movie. The landscape is both scenic and barren at the same time. A load of westerns have been filmed out in this part of the world and it is easy to see why. Seeing Monument Valley ... read more

We left the fun-loving Las Vegas on Tuesday morning, with our stomachs full from yet another (all you can imagine) breakfast buffet, although, i think that we also left a small piece of our heart there as well. But it was time to move on and back to our trusty tent. It was going to be a long drive to the Grand Canyon as we also wanted to make a stop at Hoover Dam. It was all going well til we got stuck in traffic close to Hoover Dam - they are constructing a new bridge to bypass the tourists viewing Hoover Dam, and today they were blasting. So i think we were stuck for close to an hour. But this did not dampen our spirits and we got to enjoy a good stretch of the ... read more

Our overnight flight from Hawaii got us into Los Angeles at about 06:30. I had been able to get a little bit of sleep, Sandra hardly any and Duncan slept like a baby. It was just as well I got some sleep as we had a big day ahead of us. We were going to explore LA and then drive to Las Vegas where we would be staying for 2 nights. After picking up the rental car we headed over to Venice Beach to see the sea. With images of Baywatch running through our heads we arrived at a nearly deserted beach. We saw the famous lifeguard towers and Duncan dipped his toes into the pacific. The rest of the morning up until lunchtime was just a blur of sight-seeing. We went to Hollywood Boulevard to ... read more

We left Auckland midday Saturday and landed in Honolulu the previous night. It was a bit weird thinking about it, but brilliant that we had the whole of Saturday to look forward to! We had no problems going through customs with our tent, and were greeted by friendly faces at passport control (the first for me in the US). Once we had collected our bags, we made our way to domestic arrivals and waited for Duncan to arrive. Fortunately his flight arrived an hour after ours, so we did not have long to wait. We spent that night in an airport hotel as we were picking up our rental car from the airport the following morning. By the time we arrived at the hotel it was quite late, so we would have to wait for the ... read more

We left Coromandel and the lovely peninsula and headed north. Our next stop would take us to Russell in the Bay of Islands. This was a reasonably long drive of about 6hrs which included going up through Auckland. We decided to take the coastal route with the expectation that it would be more scenic but we were a little disappointed. There were very few spots where you could see the sea and the road was very windy and nausea inducing. The weather on the drive up wasn’t the greatest and we went through some rain but as we arrived in Russell it brightened up and turned into a wonderful afternoon. Russell is a very nice little town. It is home to NZ oldest church and is almost entirely surrounded by water. The town is picturesque with ... read more

We were quite relieved to leave stinky Rotorua after our second day. And at times we still think that we can smell the sulphur!! Our windy roads continued and we snaked our way up the east coast until Whitianga, where we stopped at Hot Water Beach - where (at low tide) hot spring water oozes to the surface and you can have your own personal ‘spa’ bath. It was unfortunately the start of high tide (low tide was about 7pm - the reason why it can only be done at low tide is so that you can access the part of the beach where the hot springs are and dig a deep enough hole to reach the hot water). The sea was a beautiful light turquoise colour and looked very inviting however, the surf was quite ... read more

Our spirits are high as we enter our last week here in New Zealand. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here but are looking forward to moving on to another destination and meeting Duncan (Sandra’s brother) in Hawaii (some interesting points on this later). The next stop on our magical mystery tour of NZ was Rotorua. Aahh lovely Rotorua, a rose by any other name would not smell as sweet, but I am getting ahead of myself. The trip from Napier to Rotorua isn’t the longest so we took a leisurely drive and tried to take in the scenery. The first significant sight we came to was Lake Taupo. This is the largest lake in NZ and has what looks like a quaint little town called Taupo (very imaginative I know) at its southern end. The ... read more
