Hey everyone, Things are going well, with the house and with me. My bruises are starting to go away, I'm not super-tired anymore, and I'm having a good time at the house. Pretty quiet around here actually, nothing too wild and crazy going on. Still enjoying wandering around town, still enjoying everyones company at the house. Things are a little hectic, there's another person in the house right now. Jaakko was on an exchange to the states and came back while I was in the UK. Jesse and him technically occupy the same room, just switch back and forth while the other is away. So Jesse's in his room still, Jaakko's in Joel's room where I was before, Joel's kipping with Alice and I'm on the big futon in the living room. It's no problem for ... read more
"How was Dublin?" you ask. Well, it was great, just watch out for the bikes. I arrived in Dublin on Monday night, and went pubbing with a girl I met on the bus from Glasgow. Had a few pints, checked out the local music, all that sort of thing. Had a late night, a slow morning, and did the art gallery/poking around town bit in the afternoon. Joel arrived in the evening, my friend went to a music rehearsal, and Joel and I had a quiet evening to be well rested for Wednesday, which we hoped would be a long day on the town and a long night visiting the pubs. It was another slow morning, then in the afternoon we started our tour of the city. We went to the Guinness Brewery, did the big ... read more
Just a quick note, it's late and I've got to get to bed. I'm leaving tomorrow for Dublin, catching an 11am bus from Glasgow, I should get there around 11pm. I don't know yet what Joel's plans are, so I'm not sure when he'll arrive in Dublin but we'll work that out as it happens, I'm sure. I've already booked a room in a hostel, so I have nothing to worry about immediately arriving in Dublin, except maybe some food. On the 28th we went to the seaside, stopped in Largs and wandered the coast a bit, visited some candy shops and had icecream. It was really nice, and a beautiful drive. Today, the 29th, we drove into Glasgow to check out the Glasgow Climbing Centre. It was great! Very nice gym, lots of walls, ... read more
Edinburgh was amazing! I spent the day there on the 27th, and took almost twice as many photos as I did in London. The shopping was fabulous, the buildings were amazing, the sights were worth paying the fares to see, and I could have spent days and days there happy as a clam. There's two sides to the city, divided neatly by the train station and rails. The New City, as it is misleadingly called, is a beautiful area, central of which lay some neatly organised streets arranged in a rectangular shape with two gardens/squares near either end. Rather indicative of what the Scots are like, I think. Very neat and organised and but still beautiful. The whole thing was designed and built in the 17th century, so you can just imagine all the amazing ... read more
Hey all! Oy, what a day. I hopped on a bus at 7am, got to London at 9 and walked around all day. Got to see all the big stuff; Buckingham Palace, St James Park, Big Ben, Parliament buildings, Westminister Abbey, the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, Picadilly Circus, Tate Museum of Modern Art, and then everything in between. By 7pm I called it quits, it was dark and I was getting really cold, and I actually bruised my collarbone from my backpack (full hiking pack). I just waited in the coach station for the rest of the evening, sent a couple emails but just rested. Despite the after-effects, it was in retrospect a phenomenal day. As far as adventures go this was my first one truly solo, no friends to help me out. It was fun ... read more
Ahoy! Today's fun: I went to Canterbury today and had a great time! There are lots of interesting shops and little windy streets; a wandering pedestrians dream. Did a bit of shopping and stopped for lunch and tea at Poppins (c'mon, I had to go because of the name... it said "Pop-in for a bite". I love the UK), then went to the Canterbury Cathedral. The Cathedral was absolutely amazing. I hardly know how to put to words how I felt about it. It was just an amazing experience, awe inspiring and beautiful and it really hit something in me. I don't mean to sound weird about it but it was sort of an emotional experience. I don't really get that way about churches and stuff normally. It's not that it was a religious experience for ... read more
Well I finally made it to the UK! I took a bus last night at 9pm from Liege, Belgium, and got to London around 6am. The train to Whitstable left at 7:30, I got there around 10ish I think. I wandered until I found someone who could directions to the stree Alice's sister lives on. I walked there and met Esther and Jason and their two adorable kids, Harry (turned 9 today!) and William, who's 3 years old. They have all adopted me into their household for a couple days, and I think it will be a blast. The kids are full of energy and fun. William kept climbing up into my lap as I was trying to sort my pictures on the computer. I showed him what a map of Canada looked like and he ... read more
Bonsoir, You have no idea how bizarre the belgium keyboard is. You have to press shift to type a number, about half the keys are in the same place, but then the other half is all over the friggin place (the "q" is where the "a" is supposed to be, so if I mess up a lot with that you know why), and I canùt figure out how to type the "at" key. Every time I want to type it I have to copy and paste it from elsewhere. If you only knew how long it is taking to type this. I'm in Liege, which is about a stones throw over the Belgium border from Maastricht. I came over this afternoon with Jesse and his mom, they were already planning to come here to visit a ... read more
Hey all, Well I just added a blog that I wrote several days ago, and I debated sending it at all because it is somewhat obsolete, and my plans certainly did not work out the way I had imagined they would. The morning I was on my way to London, I went down to the train station in the morning before my train got there to get my ticket. In case i haven't mentioned you don't buy your ticket on the train, you have to get it from a teller or one of the many ticket machines. I thought I would pay with debit, because Joel's north american debit card works on the machines so I thought mine would too. I put the card in, select my train, and... it doesn't accept my card. Ooookay, try ... read more
*Written January 16th, I had trouble getting on to the site to finish and publish the blog, so here it is, better late than never* Hey all, I can't say I'm having a peachy-keen time here... I'm still sick, getting a bit of a cough and it's hard to muster up the energy to galavant around town. So the last few days have been quiet. I've been spending time in the house, watching movies, chatting with people. There's always someone around at any given time, and theres always something to do. I went to town a couple times, took a lot of pictures, went for some walks with Joel and Alice and whoever is around. I bought some boots! They're green!! I'm pretty excited about them. Mostly I've been struggling to go to bed at a ... read more
