Boy did that feel good...a great night's sleep. After a nice breakfast and a relaxing time on the hostal's roof observation level, we caught a bus back up the hill to Machu Picchu. We had prepaid for the admission to Waynapicchu, which you need to do, because they limit the number of people every day. We entered Machu Picchu and hurried across the complex to be in front of the line. We had heard the hike was a little crazy and you don't want to get behind some sissy. (That is Waynapicchu in the background of Micchu Picchu as I sit on a stone, taking in the complex from the trail head of Inca Bridge.) We wanted to climb to the top. The best way to communicate the hike was to post the youtube video to ... read more

Ok, it's o'dark thirty and we were up in the dark trying to get organized to be one of the first at the checkpoint to enter Machu Picchu. Once the site opens at 5:00 am, we hiked on to the Sun Gate where we were to get our first fantastic views of Machu Picchu. What they don't tell you is that on a typical morning Machu Picchu is concealed my fog/clouds. That was a disappointment and there were too many people gathered at this small area. We continued on to the next opportunity for an overlook...the fog was lifting. As we stood there, Machu Picchu revealed itself to us. Eddy also revealed a box of red T-shirts emblazoned with the LlamaPath logo...we were more than willing to advertise what had proven to be a great outfitter. ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail May 5th 2014

After our routine morning delivery of coca tea to our tent, we packed up our stuff for another day. The morning sunrise cannot be expressed in words!! "Having made it over the 2 passes yesterday we're now treated to a relaxing day through some of the most beautiful scenery the Inca Trail has to offer. With a relatively short distance to cover along what is known as Inca Flat (gentle ascents and descents) we get to enjoy the lush and verdant cloud forest around us and the spectacular views of the Andes in the distance. With visits to 2 Inca sites (Phuyupatamarca and Winay Wayna) this is by far one of the most impressive days of the trek. Our campsite for tonight is at Winay Wayna (2680m / 8792ft) which we will arrive to be early ... read more

At day break, we are greeted at the entry of our tent by porters delivering hot coca tea and a bowl of warm water to wash our hands. Quickly packed our stuff so porters could pack the tent as we ate breakfast. "Today is considered by many to be the hardest day of the trek; approx. ten hours, with 2 high passes (Dead Woman's Pass is the highest at 4200m / 13779ft) to cross and nearly 16km to walk. We get fantastic views of the high mountain ranges as we cross the 2 passes and will have the chance to visit 2 Inca sites , Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca. We will also see a variety of plant and life in the Polylepsis forests that cover this area and hopefully spot White Tailed Deer as we near Dead ... read more

The day has come to start our trek. We had to get up to meet at the bus at 4:30am for our trip to Ollantaytambo, departure point. I was surprised by the number of LlamaPath staff...16 porters, the cook and the guide, (the Red Army). Interesting, 500 people are permitted/day on the trail, but only 200 are the tourists, the rest are staff of the outfitters. Peru gov't had come up with the permit process to limit traffic on the Inca Trail, and preserve this amazing world destination. Outfitters buy up the permits, and trips fill up, so you are encouraged to reserve six months ahead of time. After taking all the expected photos, we were off! I was a little surprised that we came across quite of few people who live along the trail. I ... read more

We had such a good experience with Javier, Phil and I decided to take his Southern Valley tour. The tour of the Southern Valley involving visits to Tipon, Pikkillaqta and Andahuaylillas, lesser visited sites on the normal tourist route. As we made our way, Javier pointed out the different small towns that specialized in various foods. One town was known for pork, another for breads, another for guinnea pig. Then he pointed out a lake, very rare in this area...this town was know for duck. Tipon is a stunning example of Inka engineering used as a temple to water and agriculture. The site was probably used as a laboratory of agricultural products because of the various micro-climates found within the complex. (Inca developed some 8,000 different kinds of potatoes) Besides being an archa... read more

We headed off to Pisac, an Inca agricultural and burial site. The site exhibited the famously engineered agricultural terraces. The side of the mountain contained many holes in the exposed earth where graves had been "robbed." The bodies had been mummified in the fetal position. The body cavities had been filled with herbs to repel insects and preserve the bodies, pretty amazing. We also walked thru the town market, you could find about anything you needed. It was mid-day and time to look for lunch. We'd heard about eating guinea pigs, and with the road side stands, thought this was the opportunity. Javier had a more formal restaurant in mind but was willing to grant our request. We were glad we stopped. The grilled guinea pig is so much better than the oven baked ones in ... read more

(I've embedded a number of websites...right click on web address and select "Open Link in New Tab") I was scheduled to depart 5:30pm arriving in Lima at 11:30pm, think it is central time. Sitting in the airport, I cannot get my head around the fact that a casual conversation over beer and lunch, on Phil's deck, has resulted in a trip of a life time. A big thanks to Phil for all the efforts to put a conversation into action. Also a big thanks to Lydia, my daughter, for taking on the responsibilities of taking care of my granddaughter Adelyn, not to mention the Wood Ducklings. And, of course, Ruth, who has supported and put up with me for 41 years. (If you are reading this sentence, just be aware that the blog entries for Peru ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany April 8th 2014

After having our breakfast on the terrace overlooking Florence, we caught the No. 4 bus down to the city. Lynn and Mike have pre-purchased tickets for a number of museums. Ruth would join them at the Gallery of the Academy to gawk at David. Ruth and I strolled the city taking in a couple gardens at Palazzo Pitti (the Bardini garden was the better, but not a botanical garden that we typically look for), getting our daily gelato and generally relaxing back at Bencista. Lynn and Mike came back physically exhausted but energized by all they were able to take in. In the evening we went in to Fiesole for dinner that was recommended as the best food in town...it was. Make and the waiter carried on an ongoing conversation regarding calcio. News to me but ... read more

How can you go on your first trip to Tuscany and not see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We wanted Lynn and Mike to take it in. So after saying good-bye to the gorgeous coast we headed south to Pisa...and are we glad that we did. They have done an amazing restoration to the buildings and the grounds. The buildings colors were fully displayed in the sun lit day...not the dirty, dingy grey I remember from last time. After touring the buildings and grounds we headed of to Florence. Pisa is really overridden with the cheap touristy stuff...kinda a shame. From Pisa we drove to Lucca to visit the walled city and have some lunch at a small restaurant on one of many piazzas. Then we pretty much drove thru Florence to get up in the ... read more
