Today was a travel day. Back to civilization, wifi and overcrowded cities. Hard to believe the contrast one hour's drive can make out here. We went from wide open expanses with nary a soul in sight to 4-lane highways brimming with people, buildings, cars, trucks, signs...stuff crammed everywhere. Makes you think (and also grateful for cellular towers). Spent most of the day driving from Jackson to Salt Lake City. When we arrived, Todd had planned a special treat for the kids - an Alpine slide in Park City that he used to take his Trails West kids to each summer. They've expanded a bit, adding zip lines, a coaster and other small attractions. It took some coaxing, but we were finally able to get Sean to agree to ride, so we all hopped on the chairlift ... read more

Maggie's new pjs say I don't do mornings

It was cold this morning. So cold we had to turn on the heater to bring the RV up to a comfortable temperature. We all slept late for a change. Our typical morning has begun between 6:30 - 7:00. Today we languished in bed until 8:30 - a real treat for those of us who savor sleeping in late! After booking an evening lake cruise and perusing the gift shop for Grand Teton mementos, we moseyed down the road for yet another horseback riding adventure. Only we didn't realize when we set off that we'd be going back country, practically off-roading in our 30-foot vehicle for the last 5 miles of the trip! Billy kept lamenting that we were too noisy and bound to scare off any wildlife we might otherwise encounter. We arrived at the ... read more

We left Yellowstone this morning heading south to Jackson Hole, WY and the Grand Tetons. As the famous mountain range came into view, my first impressions were not overly awestruck. The day was hazy, the landscape before and around the mountains fairly routine, and they just didn’t startle me the way Yellowstone’s canyon had yesterday. A tough act to follow, indeed. Todd was dumbfounded at my reaction, seeing as how these are his favorite mountains of all time. He reveres them. My "Yeah, they're nice" reaction did not really compute for him. Don't know why either of us are surprised - he loves looming mountains, I love the steep ravines. Story of our relationship enacted yet again! We headed past our campground for the next two nights and continued to Jackson, WY to meet with Natosha, ... read more

Sorry for the missed post, but we stayed at Fishing Bridge Campground in Yellowstone last night and had no cell phone, no Internet, no connectivity of any kind. Totally unplugged. Really missed being able to post at night, too! The drive from Cody to Yellowstone National Park was filled with twists and turns through valleys and gorges lined with enormous mountains of varying composition, from rock and clay to evergreen forests. As we weaved our way through them, I couldn’t help seeing them as sleeping giants, completely oblivious and undisturbed by the temporary and pesky existence of humans. Despite only having one day here, Yellowstone completely lived up to its reputation. We began with Old Faithful, watching the geyser from the balcony of the Inn, which in itself was a sight to see. The towering lobby, ... read more

"How do these people exist so disconnected from, well, everything?!?" We crossed Wyoming today. Well, most of Wyoming. And my oh my is that a lot of nothing! No towns, no stores, no gas stations, no houses, and definitely no cell phone coverage! As Todd said, I was not cut out for country living. The countryside, of course, is breathtaking. At one point we drove through Big Horn Mountains and a gorge that was startling in its grandiose austerity. Jagged cliffs rising to imposing heights on either side of us. But the lack of development/civilization along our route (mostly Highway 16 for anyone who's interested) was reminiscent of my trips to Africa. At one point we passed through mountaintops with traces of snow on the ground. In July. Surreal. We also made a quick stop at ... read more

How do you celebrate a 12th birthday when staying in an RV touring National Parks? Horseback riding, of course! Maggie's wish for her birthday was to go horseback riding, and Todd worked non-stop in the morning to make it happen. After a brief tour of Bedrock City for Sean and Maggie (complete with a ride on a go-kart powered Flintstone-mobile), we ended up at Palmer's Gulch Stables, part of the KOA Campground in Hill City, SD. What a gift - for all of us! The boys had never been, and Maggie had limited experience. But the gentle horses were perfect for our novice group, the scenery peaceful and rejuvenating for your spirit, and the guides for our group entertaining and capable. We rode the Buckaroo Loop for about an hour, with Marcia and the kids in ... read more

Our first full day on the road! Check out our pics for a “tour” of the interior and its passengers. We are definitely going to enjoy this mode of transportation. Squeezing back into the minivan for our return trip is probably going to be pretty painful. We kicked off the day with a veritable shopping spree at Walmart. Then we headed north to Cheyenne, where we had a delightful lunch at Sanford’s Grub & Pub – a model of interior decorating to which Todd aspires. There was not an uncovered square inch on the wall. The entire pub was adorned with pictures of sports stars, license plates, neon signs, pop culture items, classic toys and games, and all manner of knick knacks and memorabilia. If Todd could transform our playroom into this he would. But the ... read more

What a day! We started with a leisurely stay at our hotel this morning in Colby, KS, swimming in the pool and (mostly) hot tub after a terrific breakfast. Hitting the road later than expected, around 11:45 am, we were psyched to pick up that extra hour when we crossed from Central to Mountain time! Saw a lot more amber waves of grain on this drive than yesterday - fields that went as far as the eye could see, dotted only by the occasional silo or windmill or house (very, very occasional). The drive seemed quick enough, though, and before long we were spying the impressive mountain range in the distance through the haze. Finally, something worthy of our admonishments to the kids to look out the window! Even they couldn't be unimpressed by the soaring ... read more

Ah, the wide open plains of Kansas! Though we haven't seen Dorothy or Toto, we have enjoyed the rolling hills, expansive fields and unending rows of shoulder-high corn (not as many amber waves of grain as we had expected to see in Kansas, though). In fact, we're enjoying the drive so much we've decided to press on farther than our original intended destination at the kids' urging. Either they really love the car, or they just want some more DVD time. We said goodbye to our family in St. Louis this morning and headed over to Kansas City to watch the Royals play (and unfortunately lose to) the Detroit Tigers. The visit enabled Todd to add one more entry to his already impressive list of stadiums he's visited, and gave us all a good chance to ... read more

We made the most of our unexpected stay in Louisville by checking out the Louisville Slugger Museum (well, at least the gift shop) and then swinging by Churchill Downs for a quick pic before heading west once again. After a 20-minute wait in a Dairy Queen drive-thru, we finally hit the road in earnest around 12:30, passing the gateway to the West just after 3:00 pm. Gotta love that westward time change when you gain an hour in your day! Happily, the car top carrier is now a silent companion! But by far the highlight of our day was gathering with extended family here in St. Louis at Pete & Mary Watts' house. We spent hours visiting with Travers and Koboldt family members, while the kids grew gills in the pool. It was a truly spectacular ... read more
