Another early am departure had us on the road to Zion this morning, about a 5-hour trip, maybe a little longer with stops. Zion marks the first of three relatively close national parks - Zion, Bryce and Arches - that we know the least about. So we weren't sure what to expect as we headed northwest back into Utah. We managed to stumble upon an unexpected National Park - Glen Canyon Recreation Area. It's another dam built near Lake Powell. We took a quick look around and picked up a bonus stamp and hiking badge. The day was rainy and gray, so we didn't go exploring very much. We piled back in the RV and continued down the two-lane highway. More than once we commented just how authentic the scenery in the movie Cars is compared ... read more

Our second drive-by was Hoover Dam as we left Las Vegas. Maneuvering the RV across the dam amidst the throngs of tourists was an adventure in and of itself. While an impressive feat of engineering, Todd had already enthralled us with the tales of all the men who died while pouring the concrete, and the most startling sight was the dramatic change in color on the rock walls of the reservoir behind the dam. But it was interesting, and not too far out of our way, so worth the minor detour to see this well-known accomplishment. From there we had a long drive to our ultimate destination for today, the Grand Canyon. Todd drove, while Marcia and the kids passed a lot of the time continuing the Rail Baron game. We found a cute lunch place ... read more

We had our first drive-by National Park encounter today. We left the campground at about 7:30 so we could be at the Visitor Center for Sequoia National Park when it opened at 8:00. In addition to being eager to get to Las Vegas, we also could not drive our RV into the park due to limitations on vehicle length. So, we stopped at the Visitor Center to get our stamp and walking stick badges, took a quick picture of the sign, and then headed on down the road to Vegas. The drive was our first through the desert, wasteland as far as the eye could see dotted with short, scrubby bushes. After the twists and turns of the mountains, it was a refreshing change of pace to encounter miles and miles of straight, uninterrupted highway. There's ... read more

We made our way back into southern Yosemite today, headed for Mariposa Grove, home of the great Sequoia trees. Our tram ride was idyllic – an open air transport through the upper and lower groves with a narrated audio tour as we drove. It’s hard to describe the grove, comprised of many species of tree including oak, pine and dogwood, interspersed among the giants of the forest. The Sequoias are unique in many ways. They reach heights of 250-300 feet. They have trunks up to 38 feet in diameter. Their bark is reddish and furry. They loom large overhead, with branches and needles only appearing toward the very top. They are curiosities. Virtually immune to bug infestations, tree disease and root rot, they live until they topple over in storms, usually. And that can be for ... read more

WE'RE STILL HERE!! Sorry for the delay, but we've basically had a wifi/interent blackout for a few days now. Will try to get caught up tonight. Thanks for checking on us and continuing to read along! After another late morning (8:45 am), we made our way back into Yosemite. One of the differences in Yosemite vs. other parks we’ve visited is how long it takes to get anywhere. The park is huge, the roads narrow and difficult, and the sights spread out. We had to go back to the Visitor Center to get our Passport Book stamped (since we forgot it yesterday), and then were headed to a hike recommended by Todd’s brother, Kirk. Sentinel Dome is a relatively short hike on a trail lined with enormous trees and boulders. We had heard that the views ... read more

We made it to Yosemite today. Todd’s early rise enabled us to cross the park entrance gate just after 10:00 am, so we had a lot of time to drive through the scenic roads and explore the visitor center. In a word, the biggest first impression the park made was rock. Massive, unyielding, monoliths dominate the landscape in ways not even the Grand Tetons did. These glacier-formed, almost white, sloping mounts border the eastern entrance to the park on almost every turn. The well-known El Capitan and Half Dome were visible almost our entire drive from the eastern entrance into the valley. A drive that Todd and I agreed was the most harrowing we have undertaken so far. I am not exaggerating when I say that we did not experience any stretch of straight road longer ... read more

5:00 am - THUMP!! Marcia - "Oh my God, a bear is ramming the RV!" Todd - "Tommy fell out of bed." Turns out Todd was right this time. Tommy had rolled right out of the overhead cab compartment, falling about 3 feet to the floor below with a very loud THUMP! Thankfully, no harm done, other than an absurdly early start to the day. Luckily all were able to get back to sleep for a few hours. Good thing, too, as our day was delightfully full once again. Our plan (as of 24 hours before) was to rent a jet ski this morning and have Todd take the kids out in turns while Marcia stayed on the beach with the other kids for swimming and sunbathing. We had had a plan yesterday as well to ... read more

We headed to California today, which luckily is only about 8 miles down the road from our campsite in Southern Lake Tahoe. A surprisingly well-developed, commercial resort town - a far cry from the places we've been hanging our hats lately. We skipped the casinos and chain restaurants, though. Instead, we took a Gondola ride up Heavenly Mountain. The views from the midpoint observation deck were astounding. If I hadn't known better, I would have sworn we were in the Caribbean, the water was so blue and teal and clear. We rose about 9,000 feet, marveling along the way at the feat of construction erecting this tourist treat must have been. We have no idea how anyone scaled the virtually vertical rockface we watched unroll beneath us to clear trees, erect poles and string cables. We ... read more

Finally! Here are the entries the kids wrote and conceived completely on their own. The pictures are all theirs as well, or at least taken directly from their cameras. Enjoy! Maggie's Blog Day 12 – Highway after Highway Another late morning this morning for every camper except for the expert (Daddy), who got up at sunrise, unplugged the RV and we were off! Although the highways were bumpy, some of us deeper sleepers had the privilege of sleeping in to about 9:00 before our groggy faces left our pillows. Another uneventful driving day. Whoop-de-doo. Although loving the open fields, with mountains in the distance, there’s only so much “grass and grain” you can take before it gets tiring. Our day began with Todd finally getting to do what he had envisioned doing the whole trip - waking before the rest of us, unhooking the RV and starting down the road as we continued sleeping. It went almost according to plan. :-) Turns out the back bed is quite bouncy when in motion. And Billy has been rising with the roosters most days of the trip, today no exception. So, half of us were up and awake when Todd pulled out of Salt Lake City heading west on I-80 for Reno. But we got on the road by 7:00 am, which set us up perfectly for a marathon driving day. Some of our first "sights" as we left town were the salt flats - vast expanses of white that look deceptively like snow fields, but ... read more
