Our flight to Bangkok was via Sri Lanka with a 13 hour stopover in Colombo. We were really hoping that we would at least be able to get out of the airport for a couple of hours, rather than being stuck there for the entire day. However, Sri Lankan Airlines hijacked our plans and bussed us to an unknown hotel where we would be spending the day. When we arrived we were completely taken aback to find ourselves in a 4 star luxury hotel sipping welcome cocktails by the beach. The good news didn’t end there, as we soon discovered that not only did we have an amazing room (definitely the best we’d stayed in on the trip so far, and maybe in our lives) with a great view of the pool and sea, but also ... read more

We arrived in Kerala after an overnight stopover in Mangalore for what was to be our final week and last destination in India. Kerala is one of India's most developed states, largely thanks to it's communist government, the first one to be freely elected in the world. Kerala is ranked as India's cleanest and also least corrupt state and has the highest literacy and life expectancy rates in the country, with people living on average for 10 years longer than elsewhere in India. Although we knew we were still in India, we noticed subtle differences, including the cleaner streets, a spotless train station and newer buses. We spent our first night in Kannur, and on arrival teamed up with another traveler and headed out into the countryside in search of a theyyam ceremony, a traditional form ... read more

Our journey to Mumbai was a little easier than many that had gone before as we flew directly there from Varanasi. As we landed, the bright lights of Mumbai's cityscape came into view confirming that this megalopolis was not going to be like any of the Indian cities we had visited previously. We jumped into our iconic yellow and black Premier taxi and enjoyed the ride south through the city gawping at the skyscrapers, hotels, hospitals and seemingly flowing traffic network. The city further delighted us when we arrived at our hotel in Ballard Pier, expecting an overpriced, basic, perhaps dingy hotel room, when in fact we found ourselves in a fantastically modern enormous suite, complete with a glass shower cubicle (haven't seen one of these for a while) and a flat screen TV with a ... read more

After the disappointment of Ranthambore, we took the train to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. Given all the hype we hoped that it too wouldn't be a let down. On the train we made friends with two cute kids, to whom the train seemed to be a big adventure playground, with them swinging around from bunk to bunk. Spending time drawing, colouring and reading with them, helped the journey pass quickly and really brightened up our day. They were soon calling us Auntie-ji and Uncle-ji. Based on our experience of Jaipur, we decided to do things the easy way round in Agra and hired a rickshaw driver for the whole day. He picked us up at 5.30am and we headed to the Taj for sunrise. It was an extremely misty morning, and when we first ... read more

On our first day in Jaipur we set out with high hopes of checking out a good number of the Pink City's interesting sights, and decided to try the Lonely Planet's walking tour. Unfortunately we didn't get very far with this as we were impeded every few steps by rickshaw drivers who couldn't comprehend the concept of a walking tour and by people shouting "Indian?" at Cel every few steps. As you can imagine this was very frustrating! After 30 minutes of it we were getting pretty fed up and started giving fairly blunt answers, mostly "no thank you", and then ignoring further questions. To our dismay, however, one of the rickshaw drivers took offence to our new tactic and started an argument with us saying we were racist and didn't like Indians, and that we ... read more

Following a mission briefing from M and after picking up a few gadgets from Q, we followed in 007's footsteps and checked out the lake city, Udaipur, film location of Octopussy. Our guesthouse had an impressive view of the Lake Palace (Bond's hotel), the Jagmandir Island Palace (Octopussy's lair) and the hilltop Monsoon Palace (the baddies place). It was fun to recognise all of these locations whilst watching the film from the rooftop terrace of a restaurant and then taking a boat trip the following day to see them close up. We also visited the City Palace, the largest palace in Rajasthan founded in 1559 and to which each successive ruler has added to over the years. Another James Bond themed moment was seeing the 1934 Rolls Royce Phantom used in the film, which is part ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur December 30th 2011

Our next stop was Jodphur, the blue city famous for its pale blue houses overshadowed by the dominating Mehrangarh Fort and for being the place where horse riding breeches (jodphurs) were designed. Within the fort's towering walls was an amazing array of beautiful courtyards and corridors and lavishly decorated palaces. There was also an impressive collection of elephant howdaths and palaquins, formerly used to transport Maharajas during royal processions, and also collections of elaborate cradles and extensive armoury. The views from the impressive ramparts, so wide that they can hold 6 horses abreast, were fantastic, especially at sunset. From there we could also see Jaswant Thada, the cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, which we visited the next day. This Maharaja invented an innovative irrigation system, and people still believe he has a healing touch and ... read more

We boarded our first train from Delhi at midnight, slightly apprehensive of what the journey would have in store. During our overnight journey we experienced all that Indian Railways has to offer, traveling in second class sleeper car, with 6 people to a compartment, bunk beds stacked two high and heavily starched bedsheets in brown paper bags. We followed the crowded, laid out our sheets, took off our shoes and socks, climbed into our bunks and were rocked to sleep. We woke up to see the sun rise over the Rajasthani desert landscape. As our estimated arrival time drew nearer we were a little flustered as there were no station announcements, and we had no idea which stations we had passed through, or how to identify our destination as the only platforms signs we could see ... read more

Madness! Absolutely nothing could have prepared us for the onslaught that is India. From the crazy traffic, to the scores of cows wandering down the streets, the autorickshaws weaving insanely around any and all obstacles, the endless hooting, fresh and old cow dung, and the fresh and old human dung, it is a completely bamboozling experience! Delhi's air feels thick with pollution and likely as a result, people seem to be constantly coughing, hacking and spitting, and if that's not bad enough, no wall is immune from being treated as a urinal and the smell of urine and rotting rubbish frequently fill your nostrils. Delhi's population is in excess of 13million, and boy do you know about it! No where more so than in New Delhi train station and on the metro, during the rush hour. ... read more

Unfortunately our bus journey to Mombasa didn't get off to a very good start. We had a slightly confusing encounter with the staff at the bus office who would not tell us which bus stand to go to the next morning, but instead insisted on personally accompanying us to the bus. We initially thought this was to help us find our way as the bus station was extremely busy and crowded but soon realised that something was amiss when we were ferried onto a different bus to the one named on our ticket and were then asked to pay extra to have our bags stowed inside. Further on in the journey we found out that we'd paid TSH70,000 each rather than the official fare of TSH25,000! We were gutted!! To make matters worse it was a ... read more
