Sri Lanka
The view from our balcony Our flight to Bangkok was via Sri Lanka with a 13 hour stopover in Colombo. We were really hoping that we would at least be able to get out of the airport for a couple of hours, rather than being stuck there for the entire day. However, Sri Lankan Airlines hijacked our plans and bussed us to an unknown hotel where we would be spending the day. When we arrived we were completely taken aback to find ourselves in a 4 star luxury hotel sipping welcome cocktails by the beach. The good news didn’t end there, as we soon discovered that not only did we have an amazing room (definitely the best we’d stayed in on the trip so far, and maybe in our lives) with a great view of the pool and sea, but also lunch and dinner were included, which turned out to be 4 course gourmet feasts! We love you Sri Lankan Airlines!
Arriving in to Bangkok at 6am we were pretty tired and ready to catch up on some sleep. We ended up snoozing well into the afternoon and woke up hungry and looking forward to tucking into some Thai food. As it turned out, we

The view from our bathroom were too hungry to search long for food and settled on the first place we came across, which was an Australian steak house. We both devoured big cheeseburgers, cooked to order, accompanied by chunky chips and Heinz ketchup - not very Thai, but extremely tasty.
Over the next few days, we got to grips with Bangkok’s efficient transport network and took in some of the city’s main sites. This included the ginormous reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, the distinctive 5 pranged Wat Arun and the Grand Palace, which houses the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most revered image, so much so that special ceremonies are held when the King changes this 75cm jade Buddha’s golden clothes 3 times a year to correspond with Thailand’s 3 seasons. By the way, Wat means temple, and the above mentioned just scraped the surface of the Wats and Buddhas to come on our journey through South East Asia.
We did also tuck into some delicious Bangkok street food as well as checking out a few of the city’s shopping malls. With such a wide array of goodies on offer, who could resist buying one or two items, or completing overfilling your rucksack..!
