This past weekend I took a mini trip up north to Paihia, Bay of Islands with a friend. When we left we didn't have anything planned, just ideas of things we would like to do. It was more of a relaxing getting away so we didn't want to have to follow a schedule. We took the Naked Bus to get there which took almost four hours. Once we got there we ate at a cute little restaurant called Titos and then basically went to bed because it was late. The next morning we walked along the beach and explored a little bit on the rocks as we decided what we wanted to do for the day. Then we took the ferry to Russell which was a cute little town right by Paihia. We walked and saw ... read more

First off I would like to say I'm sorry for not updating this sooner. I got pretty busy with school work and writing a blog just didn't appeal to me. Anyway, for the second part of my break (which was almost a month ago) I went to Wellington. Wellington is more of an artsy town so I wasn't really a fan of it. It was nice and cute, but I couldn't live there. It is also the Captial of New Zealand. While I was there I went to the Te Papa Museum which was massive. It's the museum of New Zealand and has six floors. It took me awhile to go through everything but I enjoyed it, especially the section that contained Maori information. I also went to the Wellington Museum of City and Sea. This ... read more

For my mid-semester break I decided to spend the first week in Australia. Seeing as it's such a big country I only went to Sydney. I flew over by myself and met a friend from my AustraLearn program. Day 1: The flight was about three hours, but since there was a two hours time difference I gained more time. I took a shuttle to the hostel where I met my friend. Since she got there before me she actually, randomly, met two australian girls. These two were at our hostel and we all spent the night together. They took us to eat at a Thai restaurant next to our hostel. It was delicious, especially since I didn't eat anything for 10 hours before that. We then went to get transportation passes for the week. I'm glad ... read more

April 2nd 2012

I finally went sea kayaking!! First of all, it's different than any kayak I've used before. I actually sat in the kayak, as opposed to just on top of it. Also, they were two-person kayaks and I'm only used to one. This was neat however, because they actually had pedals inside so we didn't have to just steer with our paddles, we got to use our feet as well. This made turing a lot easier! There were 12 of us that went on this day trip to Maraetai beach. We had four instructors who demonstrated proper paddling techniques and certain paddle signals that they were going to use throughout the trip. I went in a kayak with a friend; she went in the front and I was in the back spot. Since I was in the ... read more

This past week I went to my first rugby game! It was between the Auckland Blues and the Wellington Hurricanes. Unfortunately the Blues lost 25-26 right at the end of the game. It was very interesting watching the game seeing as I don't know all the rules. Even so, it was highly entertaining and I had a blast! Before the game Diamond and tried to buy some blue face paint for the occasion, but we couldn't find any. At the game we saw a younger girl (about 12) with some so we went to ask her if she bought that at the stadium. (In Mt. Eden) She did not but she did offer us some of hers, so we ended up getting face paint afterall! This little girl was really nice and we talked to her ... read more

This past weekend was pretty epic! I went down to Taupo with 14 other students living in the same place that I am. They were all from the Arcadia group and I only knew two people going in. We left Friday and it took us about 4.5 hours to drive to our backpackers hostel. Once we arrived we went to a truck-stop for dinner since nothing else was open. They actually had really good food here! The next morning we woke up at five and loaded the bus which took us to Tongariro National Park. When we got there I realized I should have done more research on the hike because I didn't know what I was getting myself into! The trail was 19.4 km or about 12 miles for all you in the United States. ... read more

I went to the Pacifika Festival this weekend in Auckland. This year was the celebration of 20 years. There was music, food, arts, and dance from 10 different cultures (Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands, Tokelau, Niue, Tahiti, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and Aotearoa ). When we got there I was not expecting it to be as big as it was. It was spread out throughout the entire park. We were there for abour 4 hours. We saw many performances in each of the different culture locations. Along with many vibrant art tents, jewlery tents, and delicious smelling food tents. While I was there I bought watermelon ice cream. Which is simply a half of watermelon with a few scopes of ice cream on the top. (see picture) They also had the same thing with a pineapple as well. ... read more

In my last blog I stated I booked my trip to Bay of Islands. Since then I also signed up to go sea kayaking at the Pohutukawa Coast. This is through GlobaLinks so I will be with other students that attend the different Universities around Auckland. I've very excited for this because I like kayaking but I have only done it on a lake. The pictures of it look absolutely gorgeous. This morning I also booked my flight to Australia for spring break! I had some complications booking this flight so I'm glad it finally all worked out. I will be there for about a week and I will be meeting my friend Daniela there. She was in my AustraLearn group the first week I was here, but goes to the University in Wellington so I ... read more

I got through my first week of classes!! WHOA!!! The first week wasn't bad at all because the professors just went over the assessment process and what to expect. They did start lecturing a little bit, however. I only have papers three days a week so that's an added bonus!! I will have to use my long weekends to study/read/work on my projects and assignments though because I'm taking legit classes. I've also been preoccupied this week with trying to figure out when and where I'm going to take little weekend trips. I want to go to Wellington, Coromandel Penninsula, Tongariro Nation Park (To see lake Emerald for my uncle {and myself}), and Bay of Islands. I actually booked my transportation to Bay of Islands already so that trip is set! For spring break I'm planning ... read more

Today I attended my first papers. My first one was Management (Organisational Ethics and Sustainability). The professor didn't fo over any course material, but rather just talked to us and tried to get us comfortable with everyone in the class. He sent us outside for 15 minutes to get us out of the classroom environment to meet and just to the other students. it was neat how he approached the paper and how he preceived things. He talked about how over the years we (students) have learned to be shy in class and afraid to say the wrong thing or give an incorect answer. He wanted us to show up to class as adults, not students because he wanted us to learn and not just focus on how we would be assessed for the paper. This ... read more
