Well now I know it's been a long time but don't fume - I have an excuse. I wrote a long and hilariously funny entry about a month ago, just before I left Cairns, and the computer crashed and I lost a whole heap of genius that will never be recovered. So stop your irritation and mourn. MOVING ON! And so I have. I finally gave up the ghost in Cairns. It was getting me so so down, I was almost grumpy! So I thought "enough of this, I can't be anywhere close to approaching bitter, it's just not right! I have to sort my sh*t out and get a god damn job". And since there were none (for me) in Cairns, I thought I'd head down south and try my luck here in BrisVEGAS! However, ... read more
I STILL DON'T HAVE A JOB!! I'll get that off my chest right off. Afer the most infuriating job search ever, weeks and weeks of being rejected for STUPENDOUSLY EASY jobs, I have actually managed to land a trial for a pretty awesome gig as a photographer on people's day trips to the reef. This commences next Thursday, the job to start a couple of days later so hopefully I will impress with my boundless enthusiasm and mad camera skills.... it sounds like a really good job so fingers crossed for me!! When I haven't been tearing my hair out over not being skilled enough to make sandwiches and having to hand in full resumes for a job in a JUICE BAR........ I've joined a netball team (i totally smashed my toenail in my first game), ... read more
How did I end up here already? It seemed such a long way off and now I'm sitting in an internet cafe in the wet tropics! So any-which-ways, I left off with my flight brought forward. It was all okay obviously and I got to Kuala Lumpur which was a bit like a homecoming (in that I spent the whole flight slavering away about where I would have my lunch, and launched myself off the bus like a polaris missile towards a beautous and bountiful Veg Thali.... it always feels like home if you know where to get good food!!), before having a crazy race around the city trying to find where I could get the bus to Singapore.... the ripped out pages from Nick & Bev's guidebook lied to me, so consequently I thought everyone ... read more
Up early one morning and arriving at the Laos with only 50% of my brain working, 500B down because I spent one cheeky extra day in Thailand.... So follows a nearing overwhelming array of buses and boats shuffling us about from one place to another, filling in of forms and staggering up hills carrying 25kilos of crap.... finally we managed to make it on our slow boat that would take us for 2 days down the Mekong river to our first destination, Luang Prabang, the old capital of Laos. The slow boat.... what can I say? If you want to truly understand the meaning of RICKETY then all you need to do is to take a peek at the seats that were to house our bums for the next 2 days. Luckily this boat had cushions.... ... read more
So, another round up of many weeks into a short entry - though I am going to treat you to a couple of entries, to separate the different parts of the travels.... So what can I say about my last month and a half on Koh Tao? Not much really - I was living a day-to-day life which it's hard to round up. It's funny how quickly going diving in amazingly warm tropical water quickly becomes rote, seeing some stunning underwater life, like WHALE SHARKS! And boxfish (look them up if you can't imagine them, a small yellow cube with a pouty lips and fins). Rays, sharks, eels, a whole host of other stunningly beautiful tropical fish that would only in the divers amongst you. My friend Charlotte and I did a two-hour dive, which was ... read more
Hello again, and what a suprise that it's not a month between entries eh? The reason being is that I am on the dreaded visa run, having not planned properly and used up all my 30 day visa exemptions in 2 months, I had to leave the country and get a real proper visa that will let me stay for 2 months. I was really not looking forward to having this trip because I will miss my lovely Sarah's IE party and 5 WHOLE DAYS of hanging out with all me dive buddies and getting experience. AH WELL, it seems it is not to be but never fear, I am back tomorrow, in time for the massive post-full-moon-party rush, and in time for a couple of sad farewells that must be bid. Penang has actually been ... read more
And so I arrived on Ko Tao - Turtle Island, so called because it is shaped like a turtle diving toward Ko Pha Ngan 40km to the south (see I did read my guidebook!!). I spent my first day finding my feet and then going to SLEEP! I live in a bungalow, a 1 room + bathroom wooden shack on stilts, with a very hard bed (no blanket but 2 slight mouldy smelling pillows) and a small wicker shelving unit, a cold shower (all the showers here are cold) and about 73 geckos!! Including on massive one out on the balcony, that is blue with reddish brown markings and I kid you not is about a metre nose to tail-end. It’s nice though, it just makes a lot of noise when it’s wound up. Well to ... read more
Hello hello my lovelies and welcome to a bumper edition of Ang’s Round The World Extravaganza, brought to you courtesy of Bec’s Laptop!!! I believe when I left you last we were sitting in Trat waiting to get across the less useful border point into Cambodia. Well! We went to find dinner at a place recommended by my guidebook, but all we could find was a pile of rubble. It did not look appetizing. We ate somewhere else. We got up very early the next morning to get a songathew (truck) to the bus station, from where we took a minivan to Hat Lek, the border town, where we crossed the border without incident, but got hounded to get into taxis on the other side, we chose one which took us to the bus station, where ... read more
Oh my god I'm so rubbish at this blog thing...... but this is costing me 2baht a minute (TWO POUNDS PER HOUR! That's like my food budget for the day!!) so I'm going to tell you briefly about Ko Pha Ngan. When I left you last I was suffering from a Changover. This are like hangovers but a lot worse. Because they've been caused by Chang. This is a horrible beer, DO NOT DRINK IT!! The boat journey was mostly spent asleep, so I was quite surprised when we got to Thong Sala port on KPN and it was pouring down with rain.... We jumped on a Songathew (the back of a pick-up, basically) and paid 100baht each (that's a ripoff round these parts) to go to our random little bungalows which were right by a ... read more
So I'm acutally in Cambodia right now, but it's been a while since I updated (as ever) so I must back fill..... So from Singapore I caught the night train to Kuala Lumpur, which is a really lovely city, so much good food I wish I had a spare stomach, like a cow! I wanted to go up to the brige that connects the famous towers, but due to a train carsh a week earlier, trains were running much slower than usual and mine was almost 3 hours late. So I jst took pictures of the tower and went up the Menara Kuala Lumpur, which is the 4th tallest telecommuncations tower in the world, dontcha know? I also ate 2 curries and some hot&sour noodles that day. Mmmmmm. I found out the boys had moved on ... read more
