Mike's mom took a trip to China while I was there, and Mike and I planned to head to Beijing together for a few days before meeting her at the airport. The extra train traffic from the Expo meant that tickets to and from Beijing were hard to come by, so we had to scrap those plans. Mike went to Beijing by himself and I spent an extra day in Shanghai so I could go to the Expo again and then meet Cory and Lacey when their train got in. Before heading down to the Expo there was one other thing in Shanghai I wanted to explore. As many of you know, my parents and grandparents own a dairy equipment dealership. Our primary supplier is a company called Bou-Matic, and I discovered there is a dealer ... read more

After the 2008 Beijing Olympics were over, the next major event China started looking forward to was the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. The Expo is the latest in a line of events that used to be called the World's Fair. When I was in Shanghai last year, the entire riverfront was closed as they were doing construction and maintenance to prepare for the estimated 100 million visitors the city would get the following year. Most of these extra people are Chinese, and the extra burden on domestic transportation turned out to be very much a spoiler for the rest of my trip. It proved to be quite difficult to get a long-distance train out of Suzhou, since all the train lines through there started in Shanghai, and were sold out much sooner than usual. Mike ... read more

One of the places I went this week in Suzhou was the Suzhou Museum. The original complex was built in the 60s, but a new building was built in 2006, which was designed by I.M. Pei. This was one of the last major projects he worked on before retiring. Not much else to say about it, but here are some pictures from the museum.... read more

Not much going on yet. This first few days I haven't left Mike's apartment often. He still has a few more days of having to go into school for a few hours, so mostly I stay home or take short walks around his neighborhood. The first few weeks of the trip was always meant to be just about hanging out with Mike, so I'm OK if I don't spend every day trying to cram in as much sightseeing as I can. So, that means my activities the last few days have mostly involved playing video games and watching movies...basically all the things we did when we lived in the same house in Montana. And that's just great. That's exactly what I wanted from the time when it's just the 2 of us here. Tomorrow (I think) ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon June 25th 2010

Everything seems to have settled down for the moment. I landed last night without any hassle, got change for the bus (by purchasing an only-in-Asia can of "7Up Bite", whose flavor I can only describe as "Spree"), and headed for for the bus pick-up. Leaving the airport was like walking out of hell's refrigerator. They were blasting the AC inside, and now I knew why. Even at midnight, it was 90+ degrees and 90% humidity. Welcome to Asia. This time, I knew where I had to go and I was determined not to end up in Hong Kong's version of Inglewood. However, I didn't count on Hong Kong's street signs being impossible to read at night, especially from the seat I had on the bus. Fortunately, most people were getting off at the same stop I ... read more

你好 (ni hao) from 台湾 (Taiwan)! Another meaning for "tai wan" is 太晚, "too late." That's about right. It's only 9pm here, but it's 7am in Bozeman, and on the 14-hour flight across the Pacific I was only able to get the kind of sleep a 6'4" man can get in an economy class airplane seat, so I'm feeling every minute of that 7am. I leave again for Hong Kong in 10 minutes, and get there at 11:30pm local time, where it will be about an hour before I can actually sleep. Hopefully being this tired now means I'll adjust to the jet lag quickly! Not much else to say - just wanted to leave a note from Taiwan while I had the chance and let you know I've survived the first leg of my voyage. ... read more

I left Bozeman at about 2:45pm on Tuesday, and won't be back until Friday, August 6. It's the longest I've ever been away from home, and it's a little crazy that my first experiment with this is in a land as foreign as China. I enjoyed my 2 weeks there last summer, but 6 weeks is another matter. In that respect at least, this trip will serve as an indicator to whether I'd be able to handle moving there, which is my current plan for when I (one day) finish my alleged PhD. The flight from Billings was pleasant enough. I got to the gate with about a half hour to go until boarding, and spent my time checking over my things one last time (as if I could change or un-forget anything now), and making ... read more
