Last weekend I went to North Korea! It was probably the coolest thing I've ever done. First we took a bus up from one of the military bases in Seoul up to the Panmunjom, which is the area between North Korea and South Korea. We had to watch a short video that was both informative and funny, in that it was a sort of propaganda. I already knew North Korea is messed up. I didn't need to be constantly reminded. Then we went to the Joint Security Area, which is the only area where North Korean and South Korean soldiers look directly at each other. While we were taking pictures of North Korea and their buildings, some North Korean soldiers started filing out of their building, which made our security escort nervous, which made ME nervous. ... read more

Wow! It's hard to believe I've been here two months and haven't posted in 1 month. I think I'm starting to get the hang of things. It's still been bitterly cold and I know that there's a lot more to do when it gets warm out. So, I decided to write this entry on the bus on my way into Seoul. It's my first trip by myself into Seoul and I ended up getting on a bus I've never taken before because it said it was going to the right neighborhood. But neighborhoods are pretty large, so we'll see how this goes. At the end of February we had kindergarten graduation which was baffling and adorable in turn. the graduating "7-year-olds" (probably 6 by now) put on a musical about a man trying to feed his ... read more

Hey everybody! I’ve been in Korea for an entire month! And luckily it started to warm up FINALLY. After weeks of being in the single digits, we are currently at 43 degrees! The news of greatest importance is that I finally got my Alien Registration Card (ARC) on Tuesday, so I now have a bank account and a cell phone! I was ecstatic, to say the least. My cell phone was really cheap, has a great camera, a Korean-English dictionary and a subway map. It’s pretty impressive. At work we’ve just started a new month of classes, so I only kept one of the classes I had last month. All of my classes were just for the month of January, but my phonics class became my beginner class. It was really nice to have them as ... read more

So I've taught my own classes for over a week now and I'm really getting the hang out it. But not gym. I don't think I'll ever get used to the gym classes here. There's always kids running everywhere and I don't know all of their names yet since I don't teach the kindergarten kids regularly. They also play some pretty risky games. Dodgeball is pretty common, though I'm not sure it's a brilliant idea in a room that has a lot of computers. The computers are also a problem for one of my gym classes b/c one of the kids loves pulling the cords out of the computers and flipping switches, etc. Basically I spend my time watching him like a hawk while the other teacher runs the gym class. Another game the kids LOVE ... read more

Hi! Today I started teaching classes by myself, which is MUCH more interesting than watching someone else teach. Though I had to do some of that as well. I finally got my schedule for the month, so I can really prepare for classes now. In the morning I have Winter Intensive courses, which are for the super smart kids whose parents make them do extra school. Today they had to show me homework that involved writing a story about discovering a planet and one of the kids had me absolutley riveted. It was crazy exciting! And the grammar was at least as good as a native-speaker his age. So those classes are really easy. Everyone's done their homework, everyone knows what I'm talking about. Wednesdays and Thursdays I do lunch duty and supervise gym for kindergarteners ... read more

Hey all! I finally made it to Korea. The flight was ridiculously long. When I flew out of San Francisco, the first couple of hours went by incredibly quickly. And then I felt like I was going to pull my hair out for the remaining 9. Driving to Dongtan, I recognized a Hyundai building and a Harley Davidson mega-store. This would suggest that Koreans like motorcycles. But I didn’t see anyone riding a motorcycle. So I have no idea. It’s kind of amazing how cities always look relatively the same no matter where you are. There were skyscrapers and abandoned buildings and highways that look just like highways. City drivers are also always city drivers. We got cut off in traffic and I laughed. I think the owner was a little confused. Once we got to ... read more

No excursions this week since it was our last. We went to classes and spent a lot of time downtown making our last minute purchases form people at home. I bought my dad a sombrero in the zocalo market and we ate a LOT of Tepoznieves ice cream, especially flavors that are difficult to get at home, like rose petal ice cream. My friends decided to celebrate a fake birthday for me after I told them I never had a 16th birthday party so we went out to dinner and one friend bought me a dress made by local women. It's really pretty and navy blue. ... read more

On Wednesday of this week we went to Mexico City after lunch to visit the Museo Frida Kahlo and the Dolores Olmedo Museum. The Frida Kahlo museum was located in her house, which was more of a compound like the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe. My roommate passed out outside of it, which was quite eventful. It happens when you don't eat. There wasn't much in this museum, mostly just ropes in the rooms that have been made up to look like they did when she lived there with her husband, Diego Rivera, whose artwork is all over Mexico and the United States. The Museo Dolores Olmedo is housed in the home/compound of a friend of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and features many of their works of art. It also has works from other ... read more

On Monday we started classes, with includes 3 long sessions on grammar before lunch and 1 short session of vocabulary after lunch. After classes we were allowed to explore the city, so we always went downtown to explore and eat. My host family did not do much cooking so my roommate and I ate downtown often. On Wednesday after class, we went to Taxco, which is a small town near Cuernavaca that is known for selling silver. After taking a tour of another small basilica, we were basically set loose in the markets. Many of the booths sell silver, but some of them sell miscellaneous handicrafts. One persistent merchant sold handmade Chinese finger traps. I bought presents for most of my family and many pieces of silver jewelry. At one point, a classmate and I got ... read more

On Thursday, we flew into Mexico City and took a bus to Cuernavaca where we met our new host families at the school and took a taxi to our house. My house was located on a very busy, commercial street as my host family owns a little shop (tienda) and lives behind it. The next day we took placement tests for the coming classes and took a tour of downtown Cuernavaca. The bus system was very confusing to me, but we just had to remember the few bus numbers that would take us downtown and back to our houses and the school. When we wanted to get off we had to yell, "Alto, por favor!". On Saturday we visited the Shrine of Virgin of Guadalupe which is a basilica in Mexico City. It was more of ... read more
