On Monday we started classes, with includes 3 long sessions on grammar before lunch and 1 short session of vocabulary after lunch. After classes we were allowed to explore the city, so we always went downtown to explore and eat. My host family did not do much cooking so my roommate and I ate downtown often.

On Wednesday after class, we went to Taxco, which is a small town near Cuernavaca that is known for selling silver. After taking a tour of another small basilica, we were basically set loose in the markets. Many of the booths sell silver, but some of them sell miscellaneous handicrafts. One persistent merchant sold handmade Chinese finger traps. I bought presents for most of my family and many pieces of silver jewelry. At one point, a classmate and I got lost and found our way to the center of town. The tour guide from the basilica found us and told us he could help us find the rest of our group. We found the rest of the group, but we also magically found his mother's silver stand. What a coincidence....But I did find a jewelry set for my sister which was very pretty. Taxco

Every shop and stall had this much to look at. It was very difficult to choose!
was really pretty looking since it was built into a hill and all of the roads around the zocalo and are narrow and winding.

On Friday we were supposed to visit Oaxaca for the weekend because it's considered the cultural capital of Mexico, but we came right before a national election and the rioting has gotten pretty violent in Oaxaca, so we changed our trip at the last minute to Acapulco. Friday night we watched the cliff divers with a very culturally diverse group of tourists. The next day we spent of the beach. I applied sunscreen 3 times and was only in the sun for and hour and a half, but I still managed to get the worst sunburn I've ever had. Darn my fair skin! Multiple cycles of blistering and peeling occurred. We spent the night wandering around the main street. We visited both Wal-Mart and Burger King, so we really got to experience the Mexican culture... We also did karaoke in the hotel's bar/restaurant, but we were the only people there. For as many karaoke places as there seem to be in Mexico, it doesn't seem all that popular. Sunday morning everyone went out shopping, but I stayed in applying aloe vera and watching the World Cup. Which was fairly exciting, as it turned out.
