...and so it's time for our last travel blog... This one is so 'hot off the press', that we're atually experiencing it as I write it. Unfortunately the experience involves 7 hours of waiting at Hong Kong Airport for a flight to Doha, before catching our final flight home. It's 10pm here and we don't fly until 12.45am...thank god for books and free wi-fi. We've done so much travelling over the past 48 hours that we're beginning to get a bit delirious. Since the last blog, we had our final 4 days holed up in Chiang Mai, with a small amount of money and seemingly endless amounts of time to fill. I know it seems like this travelling malarky is the easy life...and it definitely has it's perks, but when you're in a city with no ... read more

So...here we are in Chiang Mai, with only a week of backpacking left. Our first 2 days in Northern Thailand don't really count, as we booked into a hotel on the outskirts, purely for the fact it had a swimming pool. After a chilly time in Hanoi we wanted a couple of days of sun...so that's what we did! Once our two days of luxury were used up, we had to downsize to a dirt cheap hotel, in a slightly more exciting part of the city. How cheap you ask? How about 6 quid a night?! The hotel in question is a bit weird. It sounds backwards to say but it has character because it has absolutely no character! For 6 pounds a night you got TV, air-con, fridge, WIFI and a twin beds...but NO frills. ... read more

Halong Bay...on a cold day

Even though our first few hours here were quite Hanoi-ing (sorry), after some sleep we feel much better and head out for a walk around. As I mentioned in the last blog, Hanoi is cold. There's not one hint of blue sky or sun for the 2 days we're there and it feels a bit like Autumn. There's not much in the way of sights here really, it's just a nice city. You can visit Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, or go to some of the museums...or just walk around. We decided to do the latter and take a big walk around Hoan Kiem Lake in the middle of the Old Quarter. It's a nice place and on the second day we also go to watch a Water Puppet show at the theatre. Water puppetry is a ... read more

We arrived in sleepy Hue (pronounced Hu-wey) on Saturday afternoon and within 5 minutes of arriving, I had a slightly embarrassing incident when I decided to get stroppy with the manager of the wrong hotel about our booking (which he obviously knew nothing about!) Another of my now regular 'Basil Fawlty' moments. We eventually realised that we were in the wrong place, apologised and left! Our actual guesthouse is run by a little family who can't do enough to help. When we arrive they sit us down and give us a bowl of homemade soup, before we even see our room. This soon becomes a theme and they offer us snacks and drinks every time we walk through the reception! Unfortunately Hue itself isn't the most exciting place we've been to. The main attraction is the ... read more

Hoi An eh? World Heritage site and town where it's impossible to take a bad photo! The whole place looks like it's leapt from a postcard. It's a 16th Century trading town, lovingly preserved since the days that traders from China, India and Japan lived and plied their business there. It has an amazing collection of architectural monuments in one little area and walking around it feels like strolling through an open air museum (like Iron Bridge!). The place is beautiful and we spend a day exploring the various winding streets and taking photos. All the buildings are painted in faded yellow and blue which adds to the charm. A particularly memorable building is the 'House of Tan Ky', which is a home that has been preserved by the living ancestors of the family who lived ... read more

For the record, I considered calling this blog something with a 'Good Morning Vietnam' theme...but I resisted, as I thought it was a bit cliched. Hence the brilliant title I decided on...so there. Anyhoo, we're now in Vietnam which is proving to be quite a whistle stop tour - to be fair we're condensing 5 months of travelling into 2 so that'll be why! I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it's one of the best countries we've been to so far, for so many reasons. We arrived 4 days ago, after another long winded bus bonanza! The journey started at 6am in a tuk-tuk, followed by a 5 hour bus drive to Phnom Penh. We hung around for 2 hours and then a 6 hour jaunt across the border and ... read more

As we spend longer and longer on buses, the blog entries are coming thick and fast! We're in the middle of a 10 hour trek to Vietnam so I've taken the opportunity to write about our final stop in Cambodia. After all the sightseeing in Phnom Penh we decided to take a quick beach break in south Cambodia. The town is called Sihanoukville and is a 4 hour bus ride from the capital. There's a main tourist hub of the town, with a selection of beaches and resorts nearby, however we tried to go one better. We'd read a few blogs before we set off and heard about a place much further down the coast which is a bit of a hidden gem, called Otres Beach. It was a mission to get there, with the tuk ... read more

A quick blog update - by the way, sorry I've stopped saying hello at the beginning of the blogs, I just decided that after 25 blogs, I'd just dive straight in :-) Anyway, the last 2 days have been spent in the capital of Camboda, Phom Penh (sounds a bit like Sean Penn). The main reason for our 6 hour journey to the capital is to visit some places that will give us a much needed Cambodian history lesson. Before I came to Cambodia, I'd heard of Pol Pot. I knew he'd ordered mass genocide in Cambodia , but that's about all I knew. In order to learn more we spent a day visiting both the 'Genocide Museum' and the infamous 'Killing Fields'. The Genocide Museum, is actually a former prison known as 'S-21' which the ... read more

The journey to Cambodia was another epic slog, 12 hours long and featuring 4 different buses! Luckily there was plenty of bizarre incidents to break the journey up. We set off from Bangkok at 7am and even though there's lots of people waiting to catch the bus, some how we end up in a mini bus on our own. We don't complain and make use of the extra leg room. After 5 hours we arrive at town on the edge of the border. After a lot of waiting we jump on another bus, before making the sweaty walk into Cambodia. The bus company offer to arrange our Visas, however we sorted ours out online in advance. Good job, considering they're charging double the price. The bus company finally manage to scam us as we walk into ... read more

Hello, Just re-read the last blog and realised it was a little bleak, luckily things definitely picked up when we got to Krabi. The journey was about 7 hours long and the majority was spent on a sweaty local bus, but we're old hands at this now. We're staying in a guesthouse about 10 minutes walk from Krabi town and even though we're only supposed to be there for the night, we end up staying for 3 more! It's burning hot weather so we spend the next couple of days on the beach in Ao Nang which is a bus ride away. Catching the sangtheaw to Ao Nang should be straight forward but I still manage to make the odd faux pas. On one ride in particular, I decide to stick my head out of the ... read more
