Albanian fries These fries actually look more like the Western fries - I never met "K"s in Albania (in '92, mind you). But the fries I rembember looked much more 'homemade' as coming from a potato. And when we ordered some more, they looked at us a bit surprised, and it took a looong time before they eventualy came. Then we realized they didn't poor them from a readymade bag into the oil for a few minutes, but got some more potatoes, peeled them, chopped them, precooked them and then put them into the oil before serving us more.
I have in particular enjoyed to follow your travels in the Balkans!
I didn't say that I thought it was dirty I never said that I thought this was porn. In the days when it was made it was said to be very daring, almost pornographic
Nonsense You have spent to much time hunched up over men's magazines if you think this sculpture is remotely concerned with pornography. She is either dying or has just had a visionary experience and so the only way to suggest this is to show her ecstatic and with agitated drapery. Don't judge the past by the low and smutty standards of the present.
I don't know I don't know. I didn't notice any fake Coke and I think I would have seen it if it was around. I'll ask Emma if she saw it though because I might have missed it. I am not much of a Coke drinker myself. /Å

Joke Do they still have the terrible coke-copy (with a very similar logo as Coke) called 'Joy Cola' or 'Joke'? (Was the only the color that was anywhere near Coke, one of the few sodas you could get hold of when I was there.)
Long time, no see I notice some things have changed since I was in Tirana and Shkodra.. back in May '92. Spent the major part of that month in Shkodra. I've climbed the small fortress too. There was a man scratching some white sediment of some kind from the rocks that built the main gate for his breastfeeding wife for her to get more milk for her baby (calcium perhaps??). There were also stories about people that had tried to escape the communist regime by smearing their whole bodies with butter and trying to swim under water, just breathing above water, across the nearby lake (can't remember its name) into former Yugoslavia (Montenegro, I assume).
There were also "mushrooms" in clusters of 2-4 together of small limed concrete bunkers scattered over the countryside, for people to take shelter in when the outside world was to attack Albania as they were "world leaders" in every aspect, according to Hoxha. Suppose their all broken down or piles of rubble these days..
Thanx, brings many memories back - I haven't been back since!
I was in exactly the place in your photo, in 1989. There has been a war since then, so I wonder if the place has changed any. I want to go back and have a look, some time. :)
Neither It's neither for swimming nor fishing. It's not even a lake. It is a river running through central Sarajevo. The river is not suitable for swimming, too little water, and I doubt that there is any place where fishing is possible. /Ake
Camera and lenses The lenses we use are just as important as the camera. Emma use Canon (350 D) and Ake Canon (EOS 40 D) and for close-ups Emma use a Sigma (70-300 mm) with Macro function and Ake use a Canon (55-250 mm), a really cheap but surprisingly good lens.
Smörgåsbord The Swedish thing comes from people not wanting to try and pronounce "smörgåsbord". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sm%C3%B6rg%C3%A5sbord
K says hello and "what camera do you use?" since he appreciated the spider and frog pictures (amongst others).
Beautiful Colca Canyon I found this on a Google search while trying to straighten out the depth of the canyon. At least 5 different depths "accurately" reported. Even Wikipedia has two vastly different figures.
Anyway, I'm glad I found this nice article with stunning photos!

It's in Chengdu You are absolutely right. The photo was taken in Chengdu. I will change that right away. That is the wonderful thing about publish this on the Web. If I make a mistake I can correct it. If I then delete the message from the person who made the observation that I made a mistake noone will ever know I made a mistake in the first place. But that is to cheat, isn't it?
In Trondheim Hi Casey,
The photo is taken in Trondheim in Norway. The statue shows the Viking Leif Ericson. I am glad you liked the statue. The statue is slightly away from the city centre, in located in the harbour I think. If you go to Trondheim you can ask at the local tourist information office or try to pick up a map of the town. Once you are in the right town it is easy to find the statue.

The photo is from Sarajevo This photo is from Sarajevo. However, I do have photos from Beijing Olympic Stadium in a previous blog entry. I can't add links in comments so to find the Beijing photos I have to ask you to type in the number of the blog entry, 508941, in the search engine on Travelblog.
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
