Borobudur The end of the Buddhist trail from India to Angkor Wat to Borobudur. One of the great achievements of restoration to this marvel surrounded by the necklace of volcanoes. Great pic for your memories Ake.
Java Java is an incredible island to travel the length and breadth Ake. So much to do and see. I am sure you were pleased you spent some time there and saw as much as you could.
High Coast Wow, this looks like a really beautiful part of Sweden! Thank you for writing about it. I love the idea of hiking for days, sleeping overnight in the interesting lean-tos, and that cube- shaped tree house! But I think I am, like yourselves, a "sunshine hiker"! Lol! That's amazing that Ake drove over the High Coast Bridge before it was completed, I'm sure there's an interesting story to that one! And I'd just love to ride one of those log chutes myself, lol! A great read, thanks Ake and Emma ?
High Coast is wonderful Actually, most of Sweden's countryside is stunning. You could pretty much travel anywhere and enjoy it. High coast does have many highlights. Thank you for reading and commenting. /Ake
Some very interesting stories and photos of your trip! I'd also like to see the Komodo Dragons in their natural habitat, but not for $1,000!! I had to smile reading your story about how you were able to reclaim your luggage from the hostel with the help of a locksmith and police! It reminded me of when in the 1980s we were in Switzerland and when we returned after dinner to our little inn, it was locked up for the night! We had to return to the restaurant we had dinner at and have them call the inn. The innkeeper reprimanded us for returning so late telling us that 11pm was very, very late in Switzerland! LOL! The story of Krakatao is phenomenal!
Glad you liked it Good to hear that you liked my stories from Indonesia. It's a pity that I don't have better photos from these old trips though. Fun to hear about your accomodation story from Switzerland. Thanks for reading and commenting. /Ake
Anak Krakatau I was reading your blog and getting to you seeing Krakatau Island and then...full stop yours faithfully. I want more. For us the trip to the island and climbing to the smoking inner core was one of the most exciting things we have ever done. My blog 'Krakatau...what a blast!' I understand about a year ago it blasted into oblivion. I take it that you climbed it...please Ake tell us more!
Sometimes I tend to write short You are right that I wrote very little about the visit to Krakatao. I often do that, mostly because the more I write the longer it takes. I didn't climb all the way up, only about half way. Actually it was dangerous to go to the top because of the volcanic gases. One of the other guys who was on tour had been there once before. He then climbed to the top but had to get down really fast because he felt like he was suffocating.
From what I understand Krakatoa erupts quite frequently. You are absolutely right that Krakatoa had a violent outbreak in 2018. An outbreak which caused much of the volcano to collapse and disappear. I actually hadn't heard of that. Thank you for telling me. /Ake
Simple but decent The hotels were simple but clean and functional. It doesn't take me any time really to get used to the squat toilets. I guess it was cold showers, but in a hot climate that's not entirely a bad thing./Ake
I have some stories from Indian trains I have taken train rides in India that were interesting as well. But I'll save those stories for later blogs. /Ake
They are amazing animals The dragons are amazing animals, but at the same time scary. I can understand why a movie of them eating a goat could put you off from going. /Ake
There will be some more As there won't be any new travels until summer we need to write about old stuff for a while longer. It is a pity that the photos from those travels have aged so much though. There is hardly a single one that I feel proud of. /Ake
Referring to Varosha? I guess you are referring to Varosha. Yes, it is kinda sad. But also uncomprehensive. I fail to see the reason for just letting it fall into ruins. /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
