This has been an amazing week. It didn't start off like that though. I felt a little under the weather on Monday, so I stayed in bed for the day. On Tuesday I had a quiet day again. I stayed on base and helped input date from a previous expo. Wednesday and Thursday I was out on the boat. Both times we got out to the Marine Protected Area, called Mpunguti, and the Marine Park, Kisite. The snorkeling there is so much fun! Lots of amazing coral, starfish, sea urchins, and so many different kinds of tropical fish. There are literally thousands of them. Surgeon fish, and angel fish, and butterfly fish, and parrot fish, and clown fish, and many more that I can't even remember the names to. There are 2 snorkel transects on each ... read more

Well, I'm on the island of Wasini right now. I'm doing my time on the marine half of the project. It's very different from the Shimoni house. There is an actual base with different buildings, but since the town of Mkwiro is a stricter Muslim community all women have to cover their heads, as well as their shoulders and knees, when we leave the base. It has a beautiful spot to sit and watch the sunset. One fun activity we get to do almost every day is the water run. We don't have running water on base, so once a day we grab our water jerries, and walk down to the ocean to fill them up and carry them back to the house. We always have to time it to the high tide because we go ... read more

Jambo! Well, week 5 has come and gone. I can’t believe how fast the first half of this expo has gone for me. I’m still having fun, and loving my time out here. This week I was doing community work in Shimoni. Normally this would involve mostly teaching at 3 different schools, but it turned out that this was the first week of holidays for the kids, so I did more community work. On Monday my fellow volunteer and I got our TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) training. It’s harder than I thought, but at the same time it all makes sense. Ours was geared more towards children, and it told us things like, keep the language simple, don’t over complicate the lessons, and make sure they know you are the one in charge. ... read more

Well, this was my last week of forest survey work in Shimoni. I've loved it so much, and had some amazing experiences. All of the things I've learned during the last month I hope I will remember my whole life, and will be able to use in the future. The week as a whole had very different activities every day. On Monday we went out to do more transect cutting in Shimoni West. It was hot work, but we got 150 m cut, and that was a big accomplishment because most of the stuff we were going through was think bush and shrubs. At the house we saw something very cool. An immature Southern Banded Snake Eagle. They are rare, and I think endemic to this area, so it was amazing that we saw it. A ... read more

Jambo! This was another fun week of forest, monkeys and good company. Abduls refers to the local restaurant that we eat at almost every Wednesday. This week went somewhere different, but I want to tell you about the amazing food that Abduls gives us. We have to order several hours ahead, because normally there are over 10 of us going. Once we arrive we get a glass of nice, cold tamarind juice, followed by a chapatti. For those who don’t know what that is, it’s fried flat bread. Then its coconut rice, coconut sauce, scuma, which is a spinach mixture that’s fried and very good, fried cabbage, beans, and a whole fried fish per person. I come away nice and full every time. There are also several cats that live in that area and whenever we ... read more

Spiders, spiders everywhere, and all of them on your face. Or at least across your path. It's amazing how fast spiders are at building webs across our paths in the forest even if we had been there 3 hours before. And they are big, at least compared to spiders back in North America that I've seen. The biggest was a Golden Orb spider which was as big as my hand, and I almost walked into him. As you might have guessed, this week was all about the forest. We have been out every day this week, and done so much. We did bird point count surveys, where we watched for all of the birds we could spot. We did human disturbance where we walked along our transects and would look for signs of humans (ie: stumps, ... read more

Well, I have now been in Shimoni Kenya for a whole week, and it has been amazing. We got picked up from our hotel in Mombasa on Saturday and bused out to Shimoni. There were around 20 of us, so it made for a very fun bus ride. It was such an eye opener to look out and see the people and places go by the windows. I have travelled to developing countries before, but this was very different from any place I've been to before. In Shimoni we got lunch and a briefing at the Shimoni Reef Hotel, which is a very nice place. Some of the GVI staff are based there. After eating I learned that for the first 4 weeks I would be doing forest work based in Shimoni Village. After that I ... read more

Well, I'm finally in Kenya. It doesn't feel like I'm actually there, but I'm sure it won't feel real until I get to my placement in Wasini and start working. Getting here was very long. I left Liam and my family around 5pm on Wednesday, and that was quite hard. I was a bit of an emotional basketcase, but I tried to hold it in. My flight to Amserdam was uneventful, other then the cabin crew asking for a doctor at one point. Beause I can't seem to ever sleep on airplanes I only slept about 1 hour before arriving in Amsterdam at 10:45am Thursday their time. After some confusion about how I would get one I bought a train ticket into the city center, because I had 9 hours and 35 minutes before my Nirobi ... read more

Well, it's finally here. I leave for Kenya to start my internship today. 6 months of counting turtles, dolphins, birds, monkeys, and other such creatures. I'm really looking forward to it. It will be a long time away from Liam and everyone else I know, but the experience will be so rewarding I know it will pass in a flash and next thing I know I will be back at home wondering where the last 7 months went. Lots of preparation has gone into this trip, and pretty much a year of planning. Now, all of the things are bought, the forms are printed, the shots are taken, and the bags are packed. Liam and I did manage to get out for one last hike on Saturday. We went out to hike up Nihahi Ridge in ... read more

Well, here we are finishing our trek 3 days early, mainly cause we are awesome. We had 91 miles to complete and were giving ourselves 10 days to do it. From Walker Pass to Horseshoe Meadows in the southern Sierra. We got through the first 51 miles in 4 days cause it was the desert and water was so scarce we had to walk long distances to find springs. Most of those first 4 days were so hot that we were craving milkshakes and anything cold by half way through the day. Day 4 was amazing cause we walked out to the Kennedy Meadows general store and ate a pint of ice cream each. (I actually had most of one and Liam finished mine as well as a pint of his own) Having only 41 miles ... read more
