Ancient Rome was a civilization that had grown out of the city-state named Rome, brought up by the Italian peninsula around 800 B.C. During its twelve-century's existence, the Roman civilization had went from a monarchy to a republic to a vast empire. It came to concur Western Europe and the entire area around the Mediterranean Sea through conquest and assimilation. The western part of the empire, including Hispania, Gaul, and Italia, eventually succumbed to a number of factors and broke into independent kingdoms in the 5th century.
