3 Bears - Shell, Gav & Mia Carroll

Well, this is it! The start of an 11 week journey throughout Indochina! This will be Mia's 3rd trip overseas (not bad for a 4 year old) having previously travelled with us to Sabah and Thailand. Gav & I have also travelled together through Nepal, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Turkey, Thailand, Italy, Greece, Austria and Germany as well as individually between us having travelled to Singapore, Bali, Samoa and South Korea, and can't wait to explore these new countries. The trip is pretty much unplanned, but we do have a fair idea of where we want to go to. Starting with a week or so in Thailand (Bangkok & Kanchanaburi - The River Kwai) then down south via Trat to Cambodia for a couple of weeks, Vietnam for a month or more, Laos for 2 weeks and then head to the Thai beaches for the remainder of our trip (if we can fit that all in!)

We leave on the 11th March and will arrive home on the 25th May.

Scenery along the way to Luang Prabang

Hi all, I accidently attached all the photos for this blog to the wrong blog. After you have read this, if you want to see the photos, just click on (next blog) or (previous blog) I'm not sure which one it will come up as! 6th May The bus trip to Luang Prabang was just beautiful. 7 hours of roads winding their way up and down through the mountains with heaps of local villages and gorgeous scenery along the way. In the past there had been banditry on this route, one case back in 2004 where a bus was ambushed and [View Full Entry]

Vang Vieng 2nd May We arrived in the gorgeous riverside 'town' called Vang Vieng around 5.30pm after a 4 hour bus ride from Vientiane. Very scenic along the way - and quite quick as far as bus trips go for us lately, so that was a bonus! Vang Vieng is well known on the backpacker trail for it's beautiful river setting with karsts surrounding it, and 'tubing' down the river. There are a heap of riverside 'bars' set up along the banks of the river where they pull you and you tube in with a long bamboo pole so you [View Full Entry]

Hanoi & Ha Long Bay Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi
We arrived in Hanoi and found a place to stay just before the rains came down. It was a lot cooler here than the rest of Vietnam, which was a relief - but I would rather have avoided the rain! That's what happens when you are travelling in the rainy season, I suppose... We were staying in the middle of the Old Quarter at a place called Hanoi Guesthouse. Hanoi is a real hub-bub of lovely old buildings with French-looking upper parts whilst underneath is a mixture of homes and shops. Different streets specialise in particular things - there's a [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Well, as you might have gathered, we found a computer that was not only fast but one where downloading our photos actually worked again! We just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone who has sent their messages & comments on the blog. We love reading them, and it's great to get something back! We haven't yet had a chance to individually respond to everyone who has, which is why we wanted to say thanks now, and please, keep them up! It's great to hear from you all back home and believe it or not, we do miss [View Full Entry]

Hoi An - Flower Vendor
Never buy yellow flowers as a gift to Vietnamese people - they are only for 'the gods' and spirit houses - otherwise they are considered bad luck!
After Mui Ne, we jumped on another bus to take us to Nha Trang, another beach area 5 or 6 hours up north. The bus was great - only about a third full, so plenty of room. We arrived in Nha Trang late afternoon and found the place we had picked from the lonely planet called 'Seaview Hotel'. We had mainly picked it as it was in our budget ($15) and had a pool. What we didn't expect was for the pool to be inside! Not quite what we had expected, but oh well. We had decided that for dinner we [View Full Entry]

Saturday 14th April Well, we finally arrived on the coast called Mui Ne and absolutely loved it. We thought we deserved a treat and therefore found a really nice place to stay called 'Blue Lagoon'. A gorgeous resort on the beach with fantastic rooms, gardens and brilliant pool. It was way above our budget at $55USD, but we realised that sometimes you need to pay more and really enjoy it rather than keep sticking to a tight budget and not have as much fun! We could only stay 2 nights as they were booked out the night after. We spent our [View Full Entry]

Wednesday 11th April Had a lazy day today after our bad day yesterday. We made the decision to spend 2 nights here as we really like the feel of the town. Can Tho is very quiet compared to Saigon and has a very calm feel about it. It is pretty much in the middle of the Mekong Delta and is based upon a large river. We booked a Mekong Delta tour on a small private boat for the next day and planned to spend today doing pretty much nothing. We went to the tourist office to book our bus for the [View Full Entry]

Tuesday 10th April All ready to get picked up in a car to take us to the bus to take us to the ferry this morning, when we were told, 'Sorry - we forgot to book your car'. They called another car quickly to see if he called get us to the bus in time, but no luck the bus had already left. The only other option was for him to drive us the whole 30km to the ferry at a cost of $25. (to us). Not happy, but nothing we could do if we wanted to get to the ferry [View Full Entry]
