Day 2 - Sunday 11th September Weather – hot, sunny (about 33c) dry Up this morning about 9am to greet our first morning in Malaysia!
We started off with a plate of beautiful, fresh fruit that Janet had bought for us (thanks Janet!) before heading off for breakfast at Syed Bistro – a local South Indian place – for roti canai (roti bread and curry to dip it in) and tea tarik (pulled tea). For six serves of roti between the four of us (one of them being milo roti) and our drinks, the total cost came to a huge RM 17.60 (AUD$6!) Although we were only having roti, all the other food on display looked amazing, including their specialty of briyani (rice) with a whole lamb shank in it – one day I’ll have to come back just to try this!
After breakfast we headed off to the west coast to the area known as Bukit Melawati in Kuala Selangor to see the local silver leaf monkeys. When we got there though, Mia and I were a bit concerned about the other monkeys hanging around that we don’t like (macaques) so we all ended up
visiting the dodgiest bird ‘park’ and fish sanctuary ever that was next door! It was a bit of a laugh for all of us though as it really was pretty bad! We did see a very nice tree there though!
For lunch we drove to the nearby river where we ate at one of Janet & Daniels favourite seafood places in the area. The food was great (when it finally came!) – we had one of our favourite dishes: oyster omelette, kangkong belachan (stirfried water spinach with chilli sambal), fried lettuce (stir fried tiny cos lettuces with garlic) ma po tofu (tofu and minced prawn) and a divine fish curry claypot. All topped off with plenty of tiger beer for us adults and fresh calamansi lime juice for Mia.
We then headed off to the Royal Selangor visitor centre where Mia and I made our own pewter bowl each for a bit of fun! The centre itself was very interesting and a nice place to cool off in the heat of the day!
Back for a swim at Janet and Daniels before their French neighbours Agnes, Harvey and their 15 year old son Charles joined us for
drinks and a barbeque. Janet had bought some interesting nuts for us to try called ‘Devil’s horns’ also known as water caltrops. She’d never had them before and when she saw them at her local supermarket decided to buy them as they were so weird! She was actually scared to pick them up individually as they were so strange! They had to be boiled (with some star anise) to make them edible – they tasted a bit like water chestnuts (same family). The best part was being inventive with the left over shells and turning them into fingernail weapons!
We finished off our first full day in Malaysia with a yummy barbeque of South African sausages and other mixed meats and Janet’s delicious tomato salad, followed by lots of French cheese and bread, wine and lemoncello! I hate to think about just how much weight I’m going to gain on this trip!!
