The Siam From The Pier
I could finally see just how beautiful the hotel is going to be, and already is. It’s been far too long since my last post where I went to Vimanmek Mansion and the Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall so it was high-time I went out for another jaunt about town. It has to be said though that I’ve not been touring, not for a lack of places to see, rather because I’ve been spending so much time heading over to the construction site that is The Siam. Every other morning or afternoon I’ve been heading down there to snap a few photos of the development and I really have to say, it is going up in leaps and bounds. Just two months ago when I arrived I was having real trouble trying to visualize just how the heck it was going to look, now, two months down the line, I can really see it starting to take shape and can really imagine just how beautiful the hotel is going to be.
We had our first official boat landing at our pier the other day, which was very exciting. We’re planning on acquiring two old barges for cocktail cruises and river shuttles and the boat that pulled up is a more than likely candidate. From the pier
The Atrium
Our main residence Atrium I was able to see, for the first time, what the hotel would be looking like from the water, I’d never really realized just how wide the property is. Walking between scaffolding and under tarpaulins you don’t really get a feel for its size but looking on it from the water you can really see just how grand it’s going to look, a real landmark in the making.
So, that’s what’s been keeping me busy these past couple weeks. It’s gotten a bit quieter in the office now though because our two big bosses, our GM and our Sales & Marketing Director have headed across the pond to the US so it was a good chance to do some sightseeing. Thewet Flower Market is a rather inconspicuous place actually. I’ve driven past it countless times on the way to the site from my apartment and didn’t even know it was there; even our cab driver took us a few streets too far. To save you some trouble if you’re planning a trip there, look for the red arch with Chinese lettering just before a small bridge, on your left if you’re going along the odd-numbered side of Thanon
Samsen, turn into Thanon Krung Kasem.
The flower market is more of a plant and garden market really. I had expected to see something akin to the Royal Rose Gardens of Regence Park in London but I think I may have set my sights a little too far afield. The market stretches for a good 200m or so down on side of the road and has everything from flowers, to cacti to fertilizer to catfish. Anything you could want for your garden you can be pretty sure of finding there. The little stalls lining the street were quite nicely laid out, with canopies and plant arrangements and small ponds with goldfish and other colourful fish. It’s too bad that I’m not in Bangkok permanently because there were a lot of nice pot-plants and the like that I wouldn’t have minded buying, but a plant is very much like a puppy, one must feed (water) it, make sure it isn’t soiled and then just generally keep it alive, you can’t just abandon it when it’s time to leave.
If you carry on walking to the end of the street past the flower market you will end up
at the river, where you can take a water taxi up or down to wherever you’d like, this isn’t what I did but had I had more time I certainly would have liked to, I could have been the second official boat landing at our pier at the hotel. Otherwise, if you’re planning on walking back up the road there is a nice little restaurant that you can stop off at, Room No. 5, next to an old colonial mansion-type building that was being renovated when I was there. The food at Room No. 5 is alright and it’s a nice place to get out of the sun, which is just what you want to do if you go early in the morning on a hot day as the sun begins to reach its peak; luckily for me it was quite cloudy today but I’ve been told that I’m beginning to get some freckles from being out in the sun so be wary nevertheless.
