Interesting.. I thought we went to Phnom Phen together all those years ago... I remember my parents refusing to take me and Tiziano to the Killing Fields, but it really must have been fascinating.
You should read these following autobiographical accounts of life under the Khmer Rouge: "When Broken Glass Floats", "Stay Alive, My Son" and "First They Killed My Father".
Unbelievable sport =) After reading this I definitely have to experience this for myself one day!!! Especially the part about the All Black players, very jealous. The photos are amazing, I can feel the nail biting atmosphere from Switzerland =)
Being 'that' child ..... ...... and for all these years I thought you enjoyed being dragged around the sights and shops!! You might have forgotten that you've also been to many a zoo in your travels - especially in India when a willing rickshaw driver would cart you off to the local zoo whilst I immersed myself in a local market - you were a very well-traveled and well-zoo'd kid!!
It sounds lovely Tarks! The description in the beginning makes me excited to see what the Siam will be like when it opens, and I wish you had been able to snap pictures inside the throne hall.
Such beautiful places you visit! :)
this sounds absolutely beautiful! i know what you mean about wanting to hire a tour guide at some sites - i feel like i miss out on so much information so much of the time.
So it seems sometimes being taken for a ride (literally and figuratively) has its rewards! This sounds like it was a lovely trip overall - I would have loved to have seen Tarka in a dancer's costume!
God I am so jealous of your job!!! And the photos are so beautiful - reminded me of what I've been missing out on not having been in South-East Asia for 2 years now! It really is the most beautiful part of the world.
I love your heavily tattooed vendor. And you're so right about being dragged by the parents. God I wish I had spent less time with my nose in a book and more time exploring on vacation. That being said - you weren't that bad as a kid :P
..... an accolade to Mum!!!! ...... just thought, maybe all those years of dragging you round temples, castles, palaces and suchlike in so many countries has paid off ........... !!!
I'm currently working as an intern at a fantastic new hotel project in Bangkok called The Siam. We've been putting together a list of sites and places that guests should go to as part of our public relations mission so I've been tasked with wandering the effervescent streets of Bangkok taking a look at all it has to offer.
I'm one of the many expat kids that grew up in Asia, I spent the first 13 years of my life living large on the small island of Bali, before it became the hotspot it is today, and have spent a lot of my life traveling around the world.
