Thursday already! Today I have two classes to teach at the Vocational Training Centre. Already had my morning class with the girls. One point five hours Attention span is going Let us play a game! Today at the VTC I introduced opposites to the girls. Up/Down. Above/Below. Tall/Short. You get the idea. I think it went over well. Basically we went over each pair. Then I had them repeat the groupings of words together as a group and then individually. Then I pulled out the flashcards I had made up to quiz them some more. They didn't quite get it at first. I held up the first card and they would repeat the word. Then I'd ask them what the opposite of that word was..they kept repeating the same word over. So I had to flip ... read more

Well, mid-week already. A nice sunny day Baby Orphanage again... Feeling some heartbreak. It's fun playing with the kids at the Baby Orphanage and then helping with the feeding of the younger kids. BUT sometimes when you think about the whole situation it is a bit heartbreaking. I sometimes wonder how these kids will be in a few years time. Where will they go when they are too old for the Baby Orphanage. They really need more clothes since a lot of the clothes they wear have rips and tears in them. I was talking to one of the volunteers here and we were thinking that we should go out and buy them more clothes from the Markets here. We've also been told they need more baby formula. Today we did the usual colouring. We cut ... read more

NOT! Well, another exciting day in Tam Ky. I did end up doing some of my laundry yesterday. Now I'm just wondering how many days it will take for all of it to dry! LOL Yesterday afternoon was nice and sunny so Claire, Karen and I decided to venture off to the beach since Karen hasn't had a chance to go there yet. Since I had done my laundry and washed two of my three pairs of pants I was wearing a knee length skirt. We head down to pick up our bikes..Hmm, this is not going to work! Great, now I have to wear my thick denim jeans! So I put those on and folded them up to make them capri length..quite the fashion statement! LOL Soon enough we set out on our bike ride ... read more

...in Vietnam. * Be a foreigner. Having a haircolour other than black will help intensify the attention getting...I should have kept my highlights! * Walk around town. Bonus: Wear a backpack. * Wear a rain poncho..especially if it is sunny out. * Ride a bike. * Eating. * Speaking. * Breathing. You get the idea! I actually wrote an entry yesterday and was just seconds from pressing "add entry" when the internet guy shut down my computer instead of the one beside mine! DOH! So here goes again... Back in Tam Ky Town Familiar sights, sounds & smells No place like "home", eh? It is interesting to realize/recognize how much I do like a bit of a routine in my life. Or rather a sense of familiarity. Not that I have a super busy or full ... read more

An uncrowded bus I can stretch out my legs. Yeah! A luxury bus! The saga of our weekend "getaway" to Da Nang continues. Saturday morning after breakfast and after repacking "lighter" the three of headed out to catch the bus along with Bridget and Hannah who were heading north to Hoi An for the weekend. A minivan came not too long after we arrived at the corner which was probably a good thing since as per usual the lot of us were generating stares left, right and centre. Surprisingly the minivan wasn't too crowded. Sarah and Hannah managed to score the front seat with the driver and Claire, Brit and I scored seats in the middle section. My seat was facing backwards so I could see the rest of the passengers in the minivan. I felt ... read more

This will be a short entry since the connection started out really good but has since taken a turn. So frustrating when you see you have 10 new messages in your mailbox but then you can't open any of them. Anyway, it is off to Da Nang with Sarah and Claire for the weekend to check out the Marble Mountains and China Beach. Weekend Getaway Time to Explore Vietnam Da Nang calls my name. I'll try attaching some photos to this entry for all to see. I have some really good ones from the orphanage. More later. Oh yeah, and Happy Birthday to Cousin Lisa! English class to teach Maple Leafs & Canada That's today's focus. Whew! Today was my first day "flying solo" so to speak while volunteering since the majority of my placements are with at least one other volunteer. This morning I was at the Vocational Training Centre where teenagers are taught skills that they can use when they turn 18 and are "on their own." The two rooms that I was taken to had sewing machines. I know this is not a nice thing to say but...training for the sweat shops?? I'll be back there this afternoon with another set of kids. Anyway, I had a class of about 12 students. I started out by trying to learn everyone's name and I took a picture of each student. They thought it was the most amazing thing to ... read more

Wow! Things are slowly coming together since we've finally started our placements. Yesterday I felt like we just jumped right in and let me tell you it was a bit overwhelming for the first few moments as you can probably imagine. It’s a bit frustrating that better records of what the kids have been taught and have learned in the past few months have not been kept because I feel like we’ll be spending the first week of classes just assessing what these kids already know. Hopefully we’ll be able to keep better track of what we teach and with Claire staying on for a few months there will be better continuity for future volunteers. My first placement was at the Home of Affection and me and Claire were with some of the younger kids (although ... read more

Where to start? I had a fabulous afternoon yesterday biking to the beach with Brit, Hannah and Claire. We set out on our bikes and the first thought that ran through my head after being on the bikes for only a few minutes was…man my butt is gonna be sore! The four of us headed out towards the market and then it was off to find the road with the bridge that we were to cross and then follow for another 8km to the beach. With our map in hand we set out for a relaxing ride. Thank goodness Tam Ky is relatively sparse in terms of people/bikes/motorcycles on the road so it wasn't too nerve wracking when riding out there on the "open road" so to speak. There was only one really busy street that ... read more

One more holiday We are biking to the beach Lots of games to play. It seems like ages since I've been in Vietnam and it hasn't even been a week. I think it is partly because we really haven't been doing anything since we got here in Tam Ky. I'm psyched and excited to start with our placements tomorrow. Like I may have mentioned, the workload looks pretty light. I think three days a week I'm finished up by lunch time! But that is okay. It will give me lots of time to do stuff that I never have time for like read and perhaps finally finish that cross-stitch thingy (eh, Anita!) Oh, before I forget, here's the mailing address for the place I'm staying at for the next 6/7 weeks here in Vietnam. 01 - ... read more
