Last February, while I was waiting for a bus to Hội An from Đà Nẵng city, I saw a bus which was going toward Tam Kỳ. I knew nothing about this city, except the famous chicken rice food. This month I decided to go somewhere in Vietnam, and Tam Kỳ was my choice as this place was completely new to me. The week before my trip, the whole area was experiencing rain and flood. Fortunately, during my 4-day trip it was sunny and dry. It only rained on the last day of my trip when I flew back home. The flight from Hanoi to Chu Lai takes an hour. Chu Lai airport was a famous site during the American war. There was free car/bus service from the airport to Tam Kỳ city (32km) and Quảng Ngãi ... read more

First Post! It is damn hot! We are writing in post at 4AM because we can't go back to sleep! We landed in Saigon and it was 95 degrees and pouring hot rain. After a rough landing in Da Nang on a domestic flight, the 90 minute car ride to Tam Ky was crazy weaving in and out of men, women, children, pigs, and even cows on mopeds! Mouang slept the whole ride but was able to catch a water buffalo right next to the van. Tam Ky is even warmer than Saigon, but not as humid. That's about all. Sorry, no photos yet. We will try to go back to resting for a long day tomorrow, or today....i have lost all sense of time and day. ... read more

Wednesday 29th August After lunch Mr Hahn took me to catch the bus to DaNang. This was another interesting bus ride - in front of me was a motor bike and there was a lot of quacking from ducks on board. Uyen met me at the bus station and took me to the Volunteer House. Then it was down to the orphanage where I spent my time last year. The "mothers" always greet me and say "Why not Brenda here in DaNang"? There was another new little baby since my last visit and I spent some time with Tinh. The physiotherapist asked me would I like to feed her and of course I was pleased to do this. It is so wonderful to see how much she has improved over the past 12 months. That night ... read more

Last day in TamKy 29-Aug-2007 Hi all The last two days have been quite hectic - who said Tam Ky was a quiet place? I arrived back in Tam Ky safely from my weekend away, but to an empty house as the other volunteers had gone to different places. All Mrs Hahn's "chicks" and one "rooster" (Phil) all returned for her usual feast. She would be the most fabulous cook in all of Vietnam. Who will sponsor her to open a restaurant??? Monday we went to the Baby orphanage and I will be so sad to leave little Lucky. He is such a dear sweet thing as they all are, but you can't help but get a "favourite" in the time you spend in the nurseries especially. Out to Home of Affection for my final lesson ... read more

Thursday 16th - Said my goodbyes to Martin, Vicky and Beka at Quang Ngai and caught the bus over to my next volunteering post - Tam Ky. Was a good trip over even though the bus as usual overcrowded. The usual when you get off the bus, you are swamped by motor bike guys wanting to take you on their bikes, but I was being met by "Mr Horn" from the volunteer house. Was welcomed by the other volunteers - Glenda, Anne, Sarah, Maebh and Lisa and the wonderful cook, Mrs Hahn. After dinner, went for a walk with Anne and then had to play nursemaid to Glenda, who was very sick. Pleased to say, she was much better next day. Went to the Home of Affection on push bike and they are a lovely ... read more

well this is it my second to last day of the program!!! only today and tomorrow left and a new volunteer arrives at the house tomorrow ( her name is carrie) i really cant believe how quickly it has gone and i want to stay for much longer! it seems pointless to go back to uni when i could be doing so much better here! but as long as one person leaves another person arrives and it really doesnt make that much difference to the children because they are so used to change anyway! the most important thing (i have come to realise..) is that while you are here you are making a small difference to their lives by teaching them and having fun with them! its so hard to leave after such a short time ... read more

Multiple Good-byes Brit & Hannah to Nha Trang Now my turn to go. I can't believe that the day has come that I will be leaving Tam Ky to continue my adventures. Brit and Hannah were supposed to catch the train around 9AM this morning. We all headed to the train station to send those two off. Then we find out that the train is delayed until 11. Karen headed back home but Sarah and I stayed at the station even though it was pretty uneventful. Just say this, I helped Brit knit a few rows of her scarf and that was about as exciting as it got! Then we found out that the train was further delayed until NOON so Mr. Hoa and Mrs. Hanh brought us back home so that they could also pick ... read more

Photos a plenty! 500 plus megabytes Click happy Bonnie I spent about three hours today getting my photos downloaded and then burned onto disk and also getting copies for the others. It took a while but at least Karen was around to help pass the time. Pretty uneventful day today. Just hung around this afternoon doing nothing in particular since I have already finished up most of my packing. Last night's dinner was delish but I don't think our guests enjoyed it as much as we did but they were all very polite and I think they appreciated the effort. Since I didn't do much to help in terms of cooking up the dinner, I was on salad prep and dish duty/clean up. That's okay by me though! Hmm, Bridget and Hannah will be catching a ... read more

Thank goodness for air con! Karen and I have had our room cooled down to iceberg conditions the last couple of days because it has been super hot out. Internet was super duper slow yesterday so I didn't bother making an entry into my blog. Instead I spent the afternoon laughing up a storm as Karen wrote a song in my honour. A little evidence that the two of us were a bit bored! lol Who would of thought singing about shoe bags, calamine lotion and knitting could be so funny??? The haiku just kept coming to me this morning lying in bed that I have not one but two in regards to yesterday afternoon's silliness. Lazy afternoon Karen creates silly songs Laughter in the air.
