Hi readers
Before we start a little addendum to previous blog - Hoi An in the marketplace having hairs individually plucked. I forgot to say that while she was attacking my legs she told me that I had a hairy face and would I like her to thread them away - bloody cheek - hairy face!! Also whilst in Hoi An after beach bit, we were cycling back and decided to have a beer - stopped and it looked like an okay sort of place. Asked for two beers and they only had one left so the woman told us to wait a minute and off she went on a motorcycle and about 10 mins later returned with a crate of beers on her bike. Oh well that was it!
Our last night in Hoi An was spent in a cafe across the road from the Trade Union, Bob only had a beef stir fry and I had garlic prawns. During the night Bob was very ill up and down to the toilet from 3.30 (lacquering the pan - Bobs words not mine}. Luckily before we left England we threw in some Immodium so he took two as we
had a bus journey and fortunately was fine thereafter. I was fine.
We booked a bus from Hoi An to Hue thinking it was a regular bus. Supposed to turn up at 7.30 at our hotel - nothing arrived so we asked receptionist to phone travel agency and was told dont worry about 10 mins- still nothing. At about 8.15 a man on a bicycle came to collect us to pick up the bus about 100 yards up the road. When we arrived it was a sleeping bus (to go 3 and half hours}. Fortunately there was quite a few spaces as it took Bob a few changes to get his long legs in the bed compartment. Off we went. We arrived in Hue and was more or less molested by a load of touts on bikes trying to get us to go to their hotel - nightmare! Anyway our Lonely Planet book warned about the touts. We just kept saying NO and crossed the road. Spotted a hotel and went in - $8 per night. Had a quick look at the room and appeared to be okay. Only there two nights so thought it would be alright. When
we got into room really scuzzy. Bath and hand basin badly stained - no it was dirty - and on the bed was a flat sheet and on top was a bri nylon cover - the type that when you pull it up it lights up the bed. There was a constant dripping of water from the electric water heater - floor soaked the whole time. Towels were then delivered, actually I said towels they were more like a large flannel with stains on - urghhh. Dumped our stuff and went out for breakfast and had muesli and fruit. Decided it wasnt one our favourite places. Bloody cyclos pestering us all the way down the road. In the evening went to a bar called DMZ - good DJ - good rum and beer and good food. Had quite a few and returned to scuzzy place! Was a bit worried getting into this extremely hard bed but managed to sleep all night - probably the alcohol. Next day walked around the city and to the Citadel a 10km walled city and to the Imperial enclosure - a citadel within a citadel. Huge amount of bomb damage - Hue held by Vietcong
Mekong
Precarious landing steps for a few weeks. The Americans came in strong with bombs and VC rockets killing about 10,000 people mostly civilians! Returned to hotel to get ready for dinner. Drank in a great rock bar and then on to eat. Back to Scuzzys early as we had to be up by 5.45 for taxi to airport flying to Ha Noi - and here we are. Taxi into city and to hotel recommended in Lonely Planet - can only let us stay for one night as they are fully booked. This time $40 - thats more like it. Room beautiful, huge bed, lovely bathroom so so clean and our own Internet connection in room. Dropped our stuff and went for breakfast and just returned. Will continue in a couple of days. Oh by the way Bob found another hotel for our next two nights - havent actually seen the room!!!!!!! Watch this space. We are still having problems uploading our photos - hopefully will find a young person to help us.
