So we left Halong Bay (really spectacular scenery) after a few more days of chilling out at Cat Ba Island and visiting the National Park, we left to go back to Hanoi to get a train down the South of Vietnam. Well, that was the plan and after a 8 hr journey that was supposed to take 5hrs; (time management is not the Vietnamese’s strongest skill but who cares we are not in a rush!) arriving back in Hanoi at 5pm on a Friday evening was manic. We finally arrived at the train station after another hour, only to be told that there were no more tickets available for that night. Pissed off, tired, hungry and after a few arguments, we headed back to the hotel we had stayed in previously. The owner was so glad ... read more

After being content with looking at other peoples photographs of Halong Bay we have finally made it here ourselves. After a few days in crazy Hanoi we were more than ready to move on. We boarded our luxury boat around miday to set sail thru'the maze of limestone karsts to Cat Ba Island. We were to spend one night on board the boat and one night in a hotel on the island. We were pleasently suprised at the standard of the boat and the 16 passengers all got on well together. We set sail and were served with lunch, sadly the weather wasn't great, dull and grey, but the scenery was spectacular none the less. The boat pulled up at a the entrance to a cave deep inside a karst, it was amazing, coloured lighting lit ... read more

As promised we have now put photo on as we're back in Bangkok and faster internet. We are now in Hanoi, Vietnam. I was warned about the mopeds here but never dreamed it could be this crazy!!! 5 million mopeds wherever you look and then more behind waiting to mow you down. The only way to cross the road is to just go, walk slow and hope they steer around you which miraculously they seem to!Not to mention the cycles, taxis and street sellers with huge baskets full of bananas and pineapples. Oh, and of course the people cooking on the kerbside. All manner of food, fish chunks of rancid meat and huge pots of vegetables bubbling away. We're staying in a nice place with a balcony overlooking the lake for 12 dollars, shame about the ... read more

Cat Ba Island Well we have got a bit out of sync with the old blog and we have Hanoi and a bit of China left to write about but I thought I would show everyone where we are at the minute and have been for the last 4 or 5 days; Cat Ba Island – North East Vietnam. I also wanted to say a big 10th Happy Birthday to my nephew James!! Xxx So we have come here to visit Halong Bay but after all the travelling around we have done over the past few weeks, we are having a well deserved chill out and done basically Jack s*&t since we have been here. We have just watched loads of films, sunbathed, eaten and drank and it’s been great. Today we decided enough is enough ... read more

After landing in Hanoi, we cheekily hopped into a booked taxi with two lads from England – one friendly scoucer and one stocky guy with crazy long hair that made him resemble Tarzan or an American Wrestler from the 90s! We shared a few stories in the back seat of the cab with the scouser, the wrestler wasn't quite as chatty, maybe he was worrying about his title fight with Hulk Hogan! The scouce lad told us his favourite place from his entire trip was Nha Trang. Apparently he was there a couple of days before us and the weather was perfect – gutted! We dropped them first and then asked the cabbie how much more to our hotel – he quoted us 100,000 dong (a fiver) when we knew we were really close. We bartered ... read more

This was our day to get a little exercise and visit several Hmong villages. Our morning adventure was a 3 KM trek that took us to the Cat Can Village and a lovely waterfall. We started off by walking down innumerable stairs from the peak of Sapa to the riverbed and waterfall. All along the way women are trying to sell you needlework bags, hats, wall hangings, eyeglass cases, wallets…. You name it. They either carry their wares in bags or baskets of have small stalls along the path. Much of the needlework is similar in design and quality even though it is hand done by many different people. Everywhere you look women and girls are constantly doing needlework. While the men work the rice fields the women do needlework primarily for tourists. Our guide explained ... read more

6 months. Where has time gone? Disappeared into a coma An emotional blur. Where’s the light that once shone? So radiant and so bright Touching the hearts of many Suddenly taken to another world Now only visible in dreams at night Anger; loss; emptiness; hope; pain No real words can describe the feelings that haunt the soul Maybe for the near future, maybe forever. Waiting and waiting, forever dreading the rain..... It feels like the rain, the emotions that is. Sometimes it feels so close, brimming at the surface, like when you get that strange instinct of the coming rain…then it may pour – everything comes out. But other times it just stays there brewing up and up, never coming except the anger. Other times it comes in dibs and drabs. One minute everything is ok ... read more

Rewinding to arriving in NAM MAN!! We arrived in Hanoi to find ourselves in a train station in the middle of nowhere and had gone back in time by an hour so it was 5am. After wading through all the taxi drivers offering “the best price” for a take you all around the houses taxis, a lady called us a taxi and we arrived at the hotel to find it all locked up, the initial “what are we going to do now?” soon disappeared when the hotel manager arrived waking only by us merely trying to pull the handle! At this point we weren’t really sure what to think of Vietnam but hey things may look different after a few hours sleep.… They did get better thank God! That day we did a city walk and, ... read more

Hanoi to Halong Bay Today again after another substantial breakfast, we met the Guide in the lobby for a 8am start to Halong Bay. We had had to condense our luggage into an overnight bag to take onto the junk, but our bags were to stay in the bus in the bay. We had a different driver today, as the last one was ill. This one favoured his mobile phone, as in Vietnam it is not an offence to phone and drive. On our journey, we passed more remnants of the French influence. There were ladies on the side of the road selling fresh baguettes and rolls. More exciting i might add was our passing of a cow strapped to the back of a motorbike. It was alive, having just been purchased from the market, and ... read more

Day 21 - half way through our adventure! Today we are up early as we have booked to go on a 2 night cruise of the famous Ha Long Bay, the home to nearly 2,000 islands made of limestone which emerge majestically from the South China Sea (as seen on one of the James Bond movies - allegedly!). The bus arrives to pick us up at 8am, but we then spend the next hour picking up other passengers from their hotels around the city. At one point the bus is descended upon by several uniformed men - all of whom look a bit dishevelled, but all of whom are very “jobsworth” and the bus driver is issued with a ticket for parking his vehicle somewhere he shouldn’t. It then takes him another 30 minutes to pay ... read more
