Alles hoeft, niets moet.

We arrived in Bangkok Tuesday, and for those familiar with E's leg condition, he did great! No great swelling. Qatar Airlines were very accommodating him and even blocking seats so he could keep his legs up. That was a great start. But even better was the trip to the Tiger Monastary. This was a trip we arranged on our own before we left which is why we came a couple of days early. This was one on my bucket list and it was worth every dime! We had to leave our hotel at 5:00 am since Kanchanaburi is 2hours from Bangkok but I had no complaints Our guide helped us buy and give food as alms for the Buddist Monks. This is the only way they receive food and the breakfast meal is the only one ... read more

Geo: 14.02, 99.53The ride to kachanaburi was to be another bum breaker. With only 2 hrs in a train, it was thought that it was going to be easy times considering what we have been through previously. However when the train rolled in, over an hr early, we were greeted with park bench esque seating... bottoms were not going to be happy with this arrangement! We... Dan, Vicky, Jay and I played cards for a while, until the train chalked up some speed and the Breeze through the windows became to strong for the cards to remain on our knees and so it was book time. Which was extended due to delays on trains coming the other way (they operate a token system, where by there is only one token per section of line and the ... read more

We stayed in Kanchanaburi for a few nights in a river raft room. It was so basic; our room was completely made from bamboo, the walls were incredibly thin and everytime a boat came past it rocked from side to side! There was no flushing toilet and the shower was filled with gheckos! But...it was so beautiful. It was really peaceful and the staff were so sweet, (despite speaking no english at all!) We had a little seating area on our raft, to sit outside and look at the passing boats, monitor lizards or the sunset over the River Kwai Bridge. We visited a WW2 cemetary, which was immaculate. There were three gardeners working away whilst we were there. It was so quiet considering it was in the city. The head stones were all identical, lined ... read more

We travelled to Kanchanaburi to visit the Tiger Temple there, supposedly run by monks, however after arriving and reading up about the place we decided it was far to controversial for us to visit. Instead we went to see the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway which was very educational! Built by POW during WW2 the bridge cost over 100,000 lives because of its poor working conditions. Some of you may have seen the film! The rest of the time however we spent by the pool. The lively tourist street in Kanchanburi was good fun and we went to the Buddah Bar one night and met a Californian who was 'jamming' with the band next door. We followed him over and had a great night dancing to the reggae reggae music! We left ... read more

Hey all, So as soon as I arrived from long flight into Bangkok I travelled to the Southern Bus Terminal to get a 3 hour bus to Kanchanaburi, a town on the West of Berlin which is famous for the Kwai bridge which was built as part of the Death Railway. I stayed in Sugar Cane hostel- which is a lovely little hostel with rooms right on the edge of the river Kwai. The room I had was an ensuite room with a double bed which was 150Baht (under 5$)! So as soon as I arrived I found the War Cemetary and then did the walk up the Road to the bridge and read about some of its history, which was fascinating as I dont know much about that part of WW2, but basically the Japanese ... read more

After the waterfall our tour took us to Hellfire Pass and we also rode on the Death Railway. During WWII the Japanese put POWs to work building a railway through western Thailand. They worked day and night and thousands died. It's called Hellfire Pass because all the torches at night lit up the rock in such a way that it resembled hell. The site of the railway is now a walking trail and a memorial. We walked down the trail, our guide pointing out things like where dynamite sticks had been blasted. It's so quiet and peaceful now, it's hard to imagine it any other way. After visiting the museum we took the train along part of the line. The views were incredible, but it's sad to think about why the line exists.... read more

I love elephants. Every time I've visited Thailand I've wanted to go and spend a day with them but it's never worked out. I wanted to do more than just ride one (which is actually really hard on them), I wanted to interact with them. When I ran across Elephant's World on the internet I thought, "This is it! This is my chance!" (Really, look at their site!) I read a few blogs written by others who had visited and it all looked and sounded perfect. I booked my reservation (they pick you up) and eagerly anticipated the day. I hoped that my expectations wouldn't be to high. My expectations were exceeded. We arrived and fed the 12 elephants breakfast. I had brought bananas for, "making new friends," but those were put to the side for ... read more

On a narrow bumpy road and full of uncertainties as we snake through further, we wasn't sure where the driver was taking us. He told us we are going to a tiger temple and I was thinking "Another Tiger temple?" We gave him 2500 baht for the transport and to visit Tiger Temple and The Bridge on the River Kwai but did not expect he came up with one more attraction Kanchanaburi could offer. He said this place has no real tiger, but the temple itself is named Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Ser), which was built not long ago. A beautiful hidden temple nestled on the top of the hill, golden shimmering reflections from afar, as the afternoon sunlight shines on the Tiger Cave Temple. Surrounded by hills, a river and the green patches of ... read more
