Not much going on in the Krabi area apart from waiting for an auspicious bit of sunshine, truth be told. For us there's only a few things we want to do round here.
Snorkeling (the visibility ain't that great right now). Topping up the tan (that can be done just walking around or lazing around). Making sure that the Beer Chang is up to standard (it is).
Yesterday we thought we ought to
do something. So we got a long-tail boat over to Koh Poda. With no beach towels, no money, no hat, no sunglasses, no Beer Chang, no iPods, no books, no food. We did however take suncream, snorkel, fins and, seasoned travellers that we are, 1 litre of water.
Still, if we hadn't gone so ill-prepared there wouldn't have been ANYTHING to tell you about.
Time to catch up on stuff from before that hasn't got posted for one reason or another. Stuff that I haven't posted is the lychee cocktail I, Deloris (that's how she spells it Dee) and Danl (that's how she spells it too) had at a very good restaurant that Dave and Mal took us - primarily to hear the local 'Kylie
Minogue' sing, along with her mother. There were loads of photos of them both everywhere, but taken a little while ago. Anyways the three of us decide this is definitely cocktail time - not that I dislike thai singing but you know it has no melody and you really need to know the words to have empathy with the singing......This cocktail came in a tiny glass luminous red and smothered in cream, we had asked for it without cream, but the manger raised his eyebrows and when we tried it we knew why. Mmmm strong think the lychee had been soaked in most things I've drunk in my time then some! So we ordered another - they took their time serving us, with a don't ask for a third vibe! So re-hydrated with Chang!
This hotel is lovely; very friendly staff, fab room with private balcony lovely slabs of marble with pretty fosilly crystals in it. The only thing the other place won on was that it served chocolate brownies at breakfast, topped with chocolate sauce & nuts oh yes! Feel sorry for quite a few people at breakfast here, the general topic of conversation is how are they
gonna get home. Seems like travel companies have suddenly been very hard to get hold of. Think we are going to try to sort out our transport to Langkawi, seems like it's gonna be an overcrowded mini-bus and then an even more overcrowded ferry, oh joy, will remember to take ginger, which seems to be working. Took it everyday I had to take Malarone which as long as I don't get malaria (we only took it as we got so close to Burma), was without any side effects.
Contrary to popular belief, Thailand isn't a vegetarian's paradise, they try and sneak bits of pork and chicken into most dishes. When you do find a veggie dish chances are that it's got oyster sauce hidden somewhere. Or a fermented-to-death 'fish sauce'.
Well, we found something in Mae Hong Son night foodmarket that has become a staple of our conversation.
"Fried Papaya (with ingredient)". That's exactly how it was written on the board at the stall (how I wish I'd taken a picture), and whether or not it had any dodgy 'ingredient' concealed in it, it was delicious. And cheap. 10 baht for 5 pieces. So delicious in fact that our
carnivorous friends joined in the feeding frenzy. Me and the missus went back 3 times till she'd run out of 'ingredient' and had to pack up the stall.
Oh for a tub of 'ingredient' to take with us on our travels.
Here in Ao nang we've found an excellent Indian restaurant that serves up delicious veggie stuff. The (Indian) owner has become a bit of a friend.
The chaos continues in Bangkok, luckily we're a few hundred miles away and the only way we know anything's going on is that there are hotels here full of people whose only topic of conversation at breakfast is how they're going to get home. The preferred way seems to be a 19 hour VIP bus ride to Kuala Lumpur. Some hotels are doing quite well out of the stranded tourists, but others are really starting to feel the pinch as expected visitors fail to arrive for the high season. Troubled times ahead, I fear, for the livelihoods of many unfortunate Thai people.
Never mind, we've booked our ride down to Langkawi next Saturday so we'll just have to hope the south stays nice and calm till then.

Well, finally ! Sean and I just had a discussion about "Where in the world is Jon and Barb " tonight. Hoping you were okay and able to get on the road without any trouble. Most delicious Chinese dish I ever ate was one with Lychee Nuts. Fermented fish sauce, not so good. Brownies for breakfast, my kind of place. Glad the hotels have been good and you are safe. Be most happy when you are in Aussie country.
