Okay....where did I leave off? Oh, yes. We'd arrived in Chaing Rai, done the home stay and boarded the farm tractors.... The tractors took us up into the hills as far as they could - then we got out and started walking. The first day was almost all up hill for about 14 km. We went up about 1300 feet to the first village. I was totally exhausted and reaffirmed my belief that I'm not really an outdoors person. I was so glad I hired a porter to carry my bag, I probably would have kissed him at the end. :-) We arrived at a sort of guest house at the first village. It had definitely been built for tourists and over looked the village rather than was inside it. it was almost luxurious - by ... read more

OK, can't take the roosters anymore. There are thousands of them, I swear, all over the hills. They don't even wait until the sun comes up to crow! And once they start, they never stop! Thousands of them, crowing, for hours! Needless to say, between the hard, bamboo floor and obnoxious roosters, I am going to be SO happy tonight when I have a real bed to sleep in, and oh yeah -- a REAL HOT SHOWER!!!!!!! Don't take this the wrong way, I have thoroughly enjoyed the trek and would do it again anytime I had the chance, but NO MORE ROOSTERS!!!!! :-) OK, now that I got that out of my system, how about a real journal entry... Our morning began with breakfast and a visit to the local Chinese language school where we ... read more

On Jan 2, we left Chiang Rai for Chiang Mai. With our small lesson on the day we went from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (with a 4 hour wait), we bought bus tickets in advance and secured the 9:45 am bus. ChiangMai is the second biggest city in Thailand, after Bangkok. (The air is not as bad as I thought it would be.) Most backpackers stay inside the old city, surrounded by moats, or close to the Tha Phae Gate. During the New Years, there were a lot of travellers. Many Thais come to Chiang Mai to celebrate the new year. We were lucky to secure a guesthouse in advance. Although ChiangMai is the second biggest city, there is only one local bus that travels to several locations. All other transportation is served by the ... read more

Well, it has been an interesting few days! Since I last wrote, we woke up on New Year's Day and boarded a public bus to Chaing Rai. The family behind us had obviously had a great celebration as they threw up all over the back of the bus. This made the 3 hour ride seem even longer. We arrived here in Chaing Rai where we stayed with a Thai family on their living room floor. We did a short walk to town - which consisted of 3 stalls selling crepes with blueberry jam, dried pork and chocolate. Nobody tried one. We also saw a pig head that was quite fresh. Then we played soccer with the neighborhood kids. We had dinner at our homestay then thekids performed traditional thai instruments and dance for us. That was ... read more

Before leaving for our next village, we stopped by the village school, gave gifts of pencils and notebooks to the teacher and learned a little about why kids there go to school and their chances of going to university. Most families are farmers and wish their children to stay and help, so education beyond primary school is not valued as we do. But, if children wish to go on to high school, they must live during the week in the city and be brought by truck back and forth on the weekends. Most families do not have money for this, so many kids do not go to school beyond the age of 10/12. Other than the teacher and one woman who was asked by our guide to let us see the inside of her home, we ... read more

On Dec 30, 2006, we took an early bus from Pai to Chiang Mai. Gary got a seat at the very front of the bus and took a lot of pictures. It was a very misty morning, but the sky cleared up as soon as we left Pai and ascend to the mountain. The scenery is beautiful from the mountains top as the valley are covered by fog. Half the way to Chiang Mai was hilly and winding roads. On the way when we pass the national park that we failed to get to the previous day, the bus pick up a beautiful Thai girl and her name is Amp, a fourth year drama student in Bangkok University. Her English is very good and gave a lot of good information to us. We arrived at 12:30 ... read more

My main concerns this morning were to make sure I got a good shower since I may not be able to bathe for a couple days and wondering if my Chronic Fatigue will be an issue on this trek. Here is the outline of what we are supposed to expect: Day 1 - 14 kilometers, all uphill - a 1300 meter climb; stay the night in an Akhu/Lisu combo village Day 2 - 6 kilometers, some uphill - a 700 meter climb; stay the night in an Akhu village Day 3 - 10 kilometers, all downhill, sometimes steep; van ride back to Chiang Mai for hot showers and real beds!!! I am really only worried about making it the first day, so I hired a porter to carry my packpack. I am sure glad I did! ... read more

OK, so, I am going to write my journals now according to the day I would have if I had internet access the past few days. That way things should be clearer as I write about them. So, New Years in Chiang Mai - started off pretty dull, planned to go to bed early after dinner so I could stay rested for our trek, but we got sidetracked while on the way back to the guesthouse by an alley of very happening bars. We went in to check it out and realized that there was a Thai boxing arena in the middle and a transgender show. Both being quite new to us, we had to check it out. Although we kept quite tame, we watched a very choreographed Thai boxing match while at the same time ... read more

Okay...since last writing, I've been in Chaing mai. Took a nice long, hot shower - yeah!!! Put on the clean clothes that I bought and met the group at the trekking store where we rented sleeping bags, mats, etc. for the hike. I'm renting a porter too to carry my bags. Is renting the right word? Anyway...then we headed to the night market which was a teaming mass of people. Did some shopping for a few gifts, had fresh pad thai and wandered. Athena did all my negotiating for me so I was able to spend a little and get a lot. If my phrasiology is weird - blame the australians. We're starting to pick up things from each other... :-) We went back to the guest house and had a beer. Athena and Rachel ate ... read more

Happy New Year all - just in case I don't find a computer tomorrow -- actually it is only the 30th for you, but almost the New Year for us, only 12 more hours until 2006! I also have one note just to let you know why I haven't been uploading photos - I have tried the past couple times, and it either doesn't work, or it takes over 5 minutes to upload each photo - most times I don't have that much time to be on the computer because we have to meet the group to head off on another tour - sorry about that. I promise though, that soon after I get back I will post all photos as a slide show for you all to see. So, where did I leave off last ... read more
