Lots of catching up to do with the blogs! After I left you last, it was Friday morning. I left the internet cafe in search of a new book to read, a pack of cigarettes, and food. I found only the cigarettes ($2.80 a pack for Marlboros, didn't try the Thai ones because they looked iffy), but I did run into something even more amazing. Down the road there is a school (7th graders to 12th graders). It is the weekend of Loi Krathong (almost like Thai New Year), so the school was having a huge celebration. This school in particular is made of the Lanna people. Two children stopped me and asked if I would like to come and see their school. I was a bit nervous at first I was going to get jumped and mugged by these cute little 7th graders, but like I said in Blog #1, I'm going to take the chance. WOW! I walked into their traditional Lanna house (made of teak) and went upstairs. It was full of proud parents watching three beautiful Thai children doing a Lanna dance (I will try to post the video). It was so beautiful.
I was then
led to the actual school in the back, which was fulllllll of Thai children celebrating. Each class picks one girl to represent them in the Loi Krathong "beauty contest." There was a big stage, and I pretty much was the only farang (foreigner/white person) there watching. The children were practicing their English with me and wanted to take my pictures. I felt like a celebrity haha. The girls kept saying I was the most beautiful and should do the contest. I think I should go to school there 😊!!! These children were the most special, sweet, smiley, polite kids I have ever met. I wanted to kidnap them and take them home--don't worry, I have not been arrested. I don't think anyone has noticed them missing 😉.
Zach missed out on this special moment, as he was sleeping in the guest house. He says I am working him too hard and he needs a vacation from my sight seeing. I am not spending my vacation sleeping!
I went back to the guest house after I was given a flower and escorted back outside. Dumped my stuff off, bragged to Zach about what he missed, and went back out.
I decided to take a different road. Jackpot! A local market is on our same street. I stocked up on chicken curry, watermelon fruit shakes, papaya (still hate it, sorry), pineapple, chicken satay, fried banana, and I think that was it for lunch. I AM SO ANGRY! I think Mango is out of season as I have yet to find my mango with sticky rice. So disappointed 😞.
We took a wee little nap and headed out to Thae Pae Gate to see the lanterns. I will write a separate blog on Loi Krathong since it really started to kick off on Saturday night. Friday night, though, there was a little market selling things, and I got a few gifts. I am getting really good at bartering. I can't really say what I bought since a few people might be reading this. I did buy myself a pair of pants, but the real shopping begins tonight (Sunday) on the walking street. Mom, if you are reading this, I could really use a few thousand dollars for gifts 😉.... Zach bought an outfit, which I got down to 400 baht (about $12). Notice I am doing the bartering here. Zach
will pay anything since he hates the interaction. The pants though are a little snug for his Buddha belly so we have to find him a larger pair.
Went back to our beautiful guest house and sat in the lounge drinking Leo beer. Zach hates the Singha and Chang, though I don't mind them so much. Very light but very heavy. I was out by 10:30 or so, while Zach went and made friends with a massage lady down the street named Patty.... and NO not that kind of massage! We planned on going to her massage parlor on Saturday to try it out. It seems beautiful.
