Riki and her new black Kitty
We went to the vet to pick this little guy up after Riki found him abandoned near her church...she couldn't leave him there! SO...he became her 5th cat! HEATHER AND DAVE:
Hello Lovliest Family and Friends,
We finally made it to an internet cafe! We arrived into Bangkok at midnight after 18 hrs of fairly uneventful travel time. We watched many movies on the plane and are embarrassed to admit that we laughed whole-heartedly at the movie "Super Bad", we blame fatigue. Riki, Heather's aunt, met us at the airport in a "limo" and we sped home and fell into our firm bed after turning on the fan of course.
Heather's paternal grandparents, Dick and Jean, were enjoying their last day in Thailand and we were so delighted to get to see the area through their eyes, and hearing their animated stories, especially since they lived here for several years, and in S.E. Asia for around 20 yrs. Heather's dad grew up here for the first 18 yrs of his life!
We ate THE MOST SPICY meal of our lives which was actually quite wonderful an an absolute gastronome's delight filled with new flavors, textures and smells. This place was only a mere few blocks from Riki's home which is out in the 'country-side' of Bangkok, accessible only by boat up until a few years ago. The Halls left
Waiting to Eat
SPICY dinner...with Riki, Jean and Dick at 3am on the 11th, the day after we arrived. The same morning we got up early and headed to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital where we had our dental appointments. Our experience was superb. Afterwards we went into the heart of the city where we visited Khao San Road, the street filled with bars, market stands selling over-priced goods, and people getting extensions or dreadlocks on every corner. It was a great spot for people watching and doing a little shopping for gifts and necessities. We ate a couple nice dinners at Riki and her husband, Yik, who is Thai, is a fabulous cook. We have tested many of the curious and strange but often delicious snacks and desserts being sold by street vendors, which takes quite a bit of 'letting go', open-mindedness and an adventurous nature.
There is an abundance of mangy dogs and cats that wander the streets, sometimes wild, sometimes casually belonging to one of the homes, they proliferate without ceasing...and actually it can be quite sad to see the condition that they are in...though people seem to be fairly kind to them.
We have been waking up to exotic bird songs...and actually, the heat has
not been too oppressive!
We visited Wat Pho, a temple that has put forth the most effort into preserving Traditional Thai Medicine, including Massage. We both received 1 hour clothed Thai Massage on mats parallel to each other. It was quite yummy. We decided at that point to have a massage at LEAST every other day, if not every day!
