Blogs from Pyeongchon, South Korea, Asia
I'm sorry that this blog has been so long coming, I guess I've just been lazy. It's hard for us to remember, sometimes, that this blog is you people at home's way of keeping up with our lives. We started this blog thinking of it as a "travel blog", but the longer we're here the less it feels like we are traveling and the more it feels like home. This is a good thing. We are comfortable here, and enjoy our lives, but it makes us crappy bloggers. So, this blog is a recap, mostly pictures, of what we've been up to the past couple of months. This will catch us all up, and then, we promise, we'll update a little more regularly. Oh, and this update is not necessarily in chronological order. It's just a ... read more
So after a couple nights out with LeAnn, she asked if I would take her to Doctor Fish. We all know how much I loved it the first time around, so I was more than happy to do so. Jeffry, on the other hand, does not like it in any way so he opted out. The plan was to meet LeAnn for coffee and Doctor Fish then meet Jeffry near the house for a movie. I met up with LeAnn near the coloured rings to take her to Restree. This is an amazing coffee shop. You buy a drink that costs around 3-4000 won, then you get free use of the bread and toast and coffee bar. There are books to read and of course fish for your feet. Our waiter spoke some English, better than ... read more
Hello again. I promised last time that I would not be so lazy with my posting, and I have failed. This time, however, laziness is not the issue. I have been incredibly busy. Between real life and school, I have not had a lot of time to post. I normally would write these in the afternoon at school when I have nothing to do. Lately, as many of you know already, I have been planning my summer camps like a crazy person. Anyhow, I thought I would write a few shorter blogs to update you on some of the fun (or not so fun) things we have done lately. On the weekend before Canada Day, there was a celebration in Seoul. Lisa, Ryan and Amy invited us to go with them, and after hemming and hawing ... read more
So we finally got down to the beach for a weekend, and what a weekend it was! The weekend before last was the famous (amongst foreigners living in Korea, at least) Boryeong Mud festival. We had been assured that it would be the best weekend of the year, and that if we were to miss it we'd be stupid. So we made plans with Lisa, Ryan and Amy to head out and stay for the Weekend. This was our first train ride in Korea. Actually, come to think of it, it was my first train ride ever, if you don't count Tinkertown, where the train goes around. I have to admit I've always romanticized train travel, in my head. It seemed like a kind of travel that was more relaxed and, I don't know, sophisticated, than ... read more
Quite Possibly the Strangest Thing I've Done -Jeffry
Published: June 25th 2008Asia » South Korea » PyeongchonLiving here in South Korea, I've found, can feel very much like living back at home. The strangeness that I originally felt, and to tell the truth not that deeply, soon passed. You get used to being the only white guy around. The language barrier becomes the norm. Hand waving and pantomime becomes easy enough. Just wait until I get home and play late night charades again. I will be the best!! The food is fun, but mostly, at home, I cook western food for Erin and I, giving her something she is used to after her adventures of Korean lunches at school. The other day we went to Starbucks near our home and to tell you the truth it felt like we were in Vancouver. But every now and again the reality that you are ... read more
Just a quick post. Went down to the market and found some produce. Here's some pictures, an idea of what it's like cooking here. All these for just under twenty bucks.... read more
So I promised I would update soon, and here I am. I think I last left off with bungee jumping. We have been a lot more low key than that this month, but I still figure someone reads this, so I might as well post. The weekend after the bungee jumping, we were invited by some friends of Lisa and Ryan's, coincidentally some are from Regina and Carlyle, to their going away party. The five girls were all done their contracts and were heading for a vacation in Southeast Asia, then home. I think some of them will be back, we'll have to wait and see though. Anyhow, their going away party was to be a western style BBQ on one of the military bases. They are friends with a man named Peter, who is American-Korean ... read more
So, Saturday was my birthday. Twenty nine. I guess I'm old. Ah, well, I try to take it in stride. I may be almost thirty, but I'm on the other side of the world, so I guess that's OK. We were invited to share a birthday picnic with some friends, but I had kind of set my sights on doing some site-seeing so we declined. So we decided that a good day would be to go to the top of the Seoul Tower and see the city. But first, on Friday, we went out for supper with Erin's co-teacher, Sue. She took us to a Shabu Shabu restaurant in Beomgye. It was great, actually. Veggies, pressed Fish Flesh balls, and shaved beef in a boiling broth. Then, when you have eaten all the good stuff, they ... read more
Apparently I haven't been updating enough for some people. Erin is going to write a blog very soon about our recent adventures, but here are pics of our dogs to tide you over. By the way we went bunjee jumping on the weekend. Erin will be able to tell you all about it.... read more
