13th Sept: We were picked up from the side of the highway, not too long after midnight. We drove through the night. I was unable to sleep and maybe got a twenty minute doze if I was lucky. We arrived at the national park around 4:30 am. We spent some time fannying on, everybody using the toilets, making coffee, and eating breakfast. Around five we left the car par to walk to Jusanji Pond. The pond wasn't too far away, about a fifteen minute walk. It was still pretty dark, when we got there, so we sat and waited for the sun to make an appearance. We didn't have to wait too long, as it soon started to get light. The pond was quite mysterious looking as it was surrounded by mountains and there was fog ... read more

21st Jun: Our train left Suwon station around ten to nine. After a quick sandwich and coffee for breakfast and planning what we would do while we were in Gyeongju, we napped away the rest of the journey. The KTX station Sin-Gyrongju is not in a great location. It's about a twenty to thirty minute bus journey from the city centre. Armed with the bus times to Yangnam for tomorrow, we hopped on to a bus to the city centre. There are loads of buses coming and going from the station, so even though it is in the middle of nowhere, it is well connected to the city. The bus journey was fairly quick and painless. We got off at the regular train station, and located our hostel, that was a five minute walk away from ... read more

Warning: This is another boring entry about a boring city. Perhaps it's not a boring city. Maybe I was just homesick and lonely so that has clouded my judgement. Nobody else checked in to Santa's Guesthouse. It would have been nice to have someone to talk to. The sites to visit today are a bit far from the hostel and I can’t walk going there. I went to the tourist office and I was given the option to either bike or take the bus. I was too tired to bike and get lost so I decided to take the bus. I also considered just buying a bus tour if its cheap enough. Turns out it costs 20,000 won and if I take the bus it would only set me back 6,000 won. I’d rather risk getting ... read more

I need to snap out of my negativity and remember the reasons why I came to Korea in the first place. I love history. At least I think I do. Gyeong-ju is Korea's open air museum with lots of history. So I should be loving this experience. I picked Korea because Korean pop is very popular in the Philippines. Korean songs make it to the top of the weekly countdowns on the radio although nobody understands them. I love Korean movies. I love their type of humor. They can make you laugh without being rude and obscene. I'd hate to be one of those prissy tourists who always complain so I'll put on my happy face. That the landscape is not as stunning is not a problem. You don't get to choose where you're born and ... read more

Gyeongju / South Korea - Rich history and kind people Finally, I flew to South Korea, where I had more spare time (fortunately) - although it was still part of a business trip. First of all: flying with Air Korea was AMAZING! Very friendly staff, and a spacious aircraft. Even in the economy class, you had a LOT of space, due to the large spacing to the seats in front of you, and the fact, that you had a complete row of seats for yourself. Perfect =) ... I landed in Ulsan (more about that "special" city later). The first challenge was to find a bus to Gyeongju, with no Korean language skills a hard task, so I missed the first Interbus and had to wait for 1h in the sun. Now I can imagine why ... read more

Today I'm going back to Gyeongju to go to the Bulguksa Temple. This temple is famous for once being depicted on their paper money. It is on top of a mountain and is an example of Korean Buddhist architecture. The admission fee is four dollars. ... read more

This is a bit late, as it’s certainly not fall anymore here, but I had a busy few months of Korea-traveling. I suddenly realized I’m really behind at posting pictures. I didn’t realize how much I did! I’ll split it up into two parts. The first fall trip I took was to the Jinju Lantern Festival. Jinju is a small city split by a river about 2-3 hours southwest of Daegu by bus. Every year they celebrate their city’s (temporary) victory against Japanese invaders a long time ago with the Lantern Festival. (The Japanese returned the next year and the outcome was different). The lanterns are mostly actually more like papier-mache’d statues that are lit up from within. It was one of the best festivals I’ve been to in Korea. We spent probably 6 hours walking ... read more

I needed a trip out of Busan to relieve the cabin fever that had set in during December, so Deborah came with me one cold Saturday on a day trip to the small city of Gyeongju. We had the incredibly comfy bus again with the seats that almost recline into a bed. It looked like a very pretty town indeed, most buildings had traditional Korean roofs, even petrol stations! One thing we weren't prepared for though was the bitter cold - the wind cut right through us! Should remember that's it's always warmer in Busan! We hopped on a bus that would take us to Bulguksa (temple) - one of the main attractions of the area and one that was mentioned in my 5th graders English book - "Gyeongju has Bulguksa. Bulguksa has two towers. What ... read more

25 - 27thNovember 2012 Andong Taxis are a frustrating thing here. Its not that they hassle us as we go anywhere, in fact we have only been asked a couple of times if we needed a taxi. And they are nice new cars. Its just that they run on LPG, which makes sense for economy, but they have retrofitted the tanks in the boot leaving little room for bags. So each time we take a taxi anywhere, we are having to squeeze bags onto the back seat with us. And generally on our own as the drivers are reluctant to get out into the cold. Leaving Andong this morning (the bus station is quite a way from the town centre where we were staying), the hotel insisted on calling a taxi for us rather than us ... read more
