Day 35 (Wed 10thOct) I moved on from Busan in the morning, after taking in Breakfast. Got the Subway to the nearest express bus terminal, bought my ticket which is very good value at just over £2 and got on the limousine bus. These buses are very comfortable with huge lazy-z-boy like chairs, nicer than some of the beds I’ve slept in. Takes 1 hour give or take to get to Gyeong-ju from Busan. Arrived and got checked into my hostel, possibly the first hostel I’ve found without getting lost, which was a bonus, although this place is a lot smaller than anywhere I’ve been so far. Buddhism: a golden statue of a fat man drapped in cloth sitting in a temple where the smell of incense wafts through the air and over the heads of kneeling monks with gleaming heads deeply bowed and touching the floor. Chanting, barefoot, drums, and om. A sense of peace, happiness, and acceptance. Basically, my storybook idea of a religion that intrigued me in how completely opposite it seemed from Western religions and cultures. Back home in the States, I hadn't really come in contact with it except for in some of my college courses, a few meditation seminars and going to yoga class. Recently, I got a chance to go on my summer vacation. Some of my coworkers took the opportunity to go to Bali or Thailand, but I figured that I’d stay a little closer to home and see what’s in Korea. A program here called Temple Stay allows people to stay at Buddhist temples to see what life is like to there. A few temples in Korea make accommodations for English speaking visitors. Figuring that they are mostly the same, I just picked a temple and went. I decided on Gogulsa Temple near Gyeonju about a four-hour train ride from Seoul.
